Encore Presentation: A Worm's Worth with Jason Reynolds

This specific episode which we released in June 2020 is featured on CBC Podcast Playlist this week in an episode titled "Feel good stories for when you need them most."  Though it originally aired last summer, we're giving it the good ole' encore treatment—along a  brief update from our host Betsy Bird on some exciting new happenings in the Story Seeds  world (like our summer camp for kids)!

    About the Episode

A Worm's Worth: Twelve-year old Brooklynite, Irthan, joins forces with the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, Jason Reynolds, to grow his story seed about an earthworm that turns into a human every 28 days, on the night of a full moon. Join Irthan and Jason as they meet up at the Youth Wing of the central branch of Brooklyn Public Library where they get to know each other and plant the seeds for their collaboration which explores music, social justice, and being seen. Then, sit back and listen to the lyrical and timely short story, "Hoo and Wut," that Jason grew out of Irthan’s idea.

#19: Tavana McMoore - Collecting Experiences and Living Aloha

In this episode of The Synchronicity Show, I talk with musician and Hawaii native, Tavana McMoore (@TavanaOfficial) to discuss flow states, surrendering to the process, the secret behind his biggest breakthroughs in life, collecting experiences and living aloha, and much more! | Brought to you by The Mindful Method.

Tavana is a multi-instrumentalist from Honolulu, HI who uses electronic drum triggers to lay down a variety of grooves with his feet while simultaneously playing guitar, banjo, lap steel, or ukulele and singing soulful, island-inspired Rock and Blues.

His 4th album ‘Aloha Spirit’ was a Na Hoku Hanohano Award Nominee (essentially the Grammy’s of Hawaii) for best contemporary album of the year in 2018.

Tavana has been the supporting act for Alabama Shakes, Shakey Graves, Xavier Rudd, Jenny Lewis, Julian Marley, and Kaleo to name just a few, and in 2009, Eddie Vedder invited Tavana to sing ‘Hawaii 78’-a Hawaii anthem of sorts-with him at the Hawaii Theatre.

I’m stoked to share this episode with Tavana McMoore about collecting experiences and living aloha, so please enjoy the show!

    Standing idly by

    Standing idly by

A short episode that sets the scene for a new series of podcasts which aim to explore the challenges and choices we face in a changing world.
Motivated by the urgency across the Globe to 'course correct' from our current direction.
Inspired by a belief that the simple shift away from 'Standing idly by' can generate such positive power that it represents the potential to become a collective force for the common good.
As Paulo Freire tells us, "Washing ones hands in the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral."
As Bob Marley tell us, "the people who want to make the world a worse place are not taking a day off so why should I?".

    interview with hannah's field

    interview with hannah's field

HannaH's Field provides a melodical embrace in a world growing ever too distant.  With a blend of dimension shifting intentions and positive vibrations, they brew a musical medicine that can be described as "Reggae Roots with a one love message" or in other words, Magic. Nominated best female vocalist in Hartford for many years, this powerful songstress has shared the stage with such great acts as Derek Trucks, Sound Tribe Sector Nine, the Average White Band, Donna Jean from the Grateful Dead, the Samples, Gov't Mule featuring members of the Allman Brothers Band, Indubious, Dub Apocalypse, Spiritual Rez and The Brothers Johnson.  They have performed at  festivals such as The 50th Anniversary of Woodstock, Unifier, and Project Earth.

They have songs in regular rotation on SiriusXM, The Joint. Their music also charted #11 on Relix/Jam Bands radio chart.

"This is unhurried music that urges listeners to connect with each other and with the Earth and to stay creative as a way of making better sense of our lives"   -John Adamian (Hartford Courant)

Their newest album, Crystal Vision, is truly an offering for the ages.  Within the perils of our current affairs, the world is in dire need of healing. This collection of song elixirs promotes a message, a proclamation of light and love for uncertain times.

To listen to HannaH's Field music:  http://www.hannahsfield.com
Included in the packaging of a physical CD is a custom chakra crystal grid and gem stones, aligned with the energy of each song selected by crystal experts.

HannaH's Field explains their inspiration:  "Crystal Vision is our tool to aid you in experiencing more positivity on this Earth plane.  We were guided to include a crystal grid with our music to help expand and accelerate the collective manifestation of a loving tomorrow"

Bob Marley's Best Friend Neville Garrick on Life Before, With, & After The World's Most Influential Artist

Bob Marley's Best Friend Neville Garrick on Life Before, With, & After The World's Most Influential Artist

Legends don’t need to live loudly to leave their mark. This week’s guest on Better With Paul is the best possible example of how unnerving passion and the power of like minds can move mountains. In episode 3, we’re fortunate enough to sit down with Neville Garrick, one of the most influential people I’ve ever interviewed – but the world still knows so little about him.

Desperate to figure out what inspired the man who quietly managed revolutionary movements alongside immortal names like Bob Marley and Angela Davis, I knew this interview had to happen. It’s hard to find someone who’s never heard of Bob Marley and I think it’s safe to say that Neville Garrick played a major role in that success.

I did my best to come to the table prepared, but the sage wisdom Neville shares is something that hits you out of nowhere. It’s something you can never fully brace yourself for. You just have to listen as he pours this refined knowledge into the room. In this episode, we discuss the moment he recognized Bob Marley’s star quality as well as a few of the tragedies they experienced together. Everyone hears the story about the hero in the limelight. This week, I wanted to sit with a different type of legend. Consider this episode my way of making sure that the right-hand and artistic director for the famed ‘One Love’ megastar gets his roses from us now.

When asked, my ganja-loving comrade won’t claim to be a ‘legend’, yet another trait I truly admire. Despite his humility, no one can convince me that his ability to translate powerful political, social, and individual battles through art is nothing short of legendary.

Neville followed his passion and created space for himself in the world. He may have chosen to stick to the shadows, but the impact of his creative vision is felt and appreciated all around the world. Dubbed a “revolutionary artist” by his first mentor, college professor, and one-time crush, Angela Davis, Neville expresses his genius through visual mediums. His art turned Bob Marley’s stage show into an experience that moved people to make a difference. He painted political statements into Bob Marley’s album covers. Best of all, he studied the audience and the world around, to continuously produce art that people could feel for decades.

His ability to see situations for their potential, not as they’re presented, is a skill every creative can learn from. Moved by the principles of the Rastafarian movement, Neville Garrick soon became the eye behind Bob Marley’s reign as one of the greatest artists of all time. “Legends Live Forever” seemed like the best title for Episode 3 because everything Bob Marley taught, all the things he believed, still live on through Neville. As he prepares to celebrate his 70th birthday, it’s clear that Neville is just getting started. He’s already lived a thousand lifetimes. I can’t wait to see what else his soul creates.

Tune in to laugh and be inspired by one of the world’s most dynamic behind-the-scenes minds.

A Worm's Worth with Jason Reynolds

A Worm's Worth with Jason Reynolds

This week’s Story Seeds collaboration brings together 12 year old Irthan and the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, Jason Reynolds (poet, storyteller, National Book Award finalist, Newbery Honoree, and New York Times best-selling author.) Jason's latest work is Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, a Remix of the National Book Award-winning book by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi. As National Ambassador, he recently started the Grab the Mic platform  which empowers young people  to share their own personal stories.

Jason sat down with 12 year old Irthan at Brooklyn Public Library to grow this story idea:

A worm becomes human at the stroke of midnight. Kind of like werewolves, but the opposite. Why a worm? Because worms are the least popular. Barely anybody talks about worms. A worm would be interesting and it would put them on an equal status with all the other bugs.

Join our host Betsy Bird as she introduces you to Jason and Irthan and sets the scene for an episode where:

    • Irthan shows Jason his YouTube videos of him playing the drums
    • They talk about Spongebob, Minecraft, and music that inspires them
    • They hash out some important details about Irthan's story seed
    • They connect over their common observations as young Black men in America today
    • Jason chronicles his writing process and reflects on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy and Irthan's story seed as a metaphor for social justice

The episode concludes with this week’s storytime (25:15) where Jason reads the story, "Hoo and Wut," that he grew from Irthan’s story seed.

    #41 (S2 Ep 10) - Bob Marley's War

    #41 (S2 Ep 10) - Bob Marley's War

This episode begins with the sounds of Barred owls calling in the New Hampshire night, as I muse about my sudden illness on Mount Everest in 2019. The wisdom of the owls is apt for Episode 10 as we recall the words of wise men from our past, including Albert Einstein, Halie Salassie and Bob Marley.

On the question of racial discrimination, Haile Salassie in a speech said to those who will learn, this further lesson:

"That until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned; That until there are no longer first-class and second-class citizens of any nation; That until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes; That until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race; That until that day, the dream of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained; And until the ignoble and unhappy regimes that hold our brothers in subhuman bondage have been toppled and destroyed; Until bigotry and prejudice and malicious and inhuman self-interest have been replaced by understanding and tolerance and good-will; Until all Africans stand and speak as free beings, equal in the eyes of all men, as they are in the eyes of Heaven; Until that day, the African continent will not know peace. We Africans will fight, if necessary, and we know that we shall win, as we are confident in the victory of good over evil." – Haile Selassie I
