Championing Equitable Wellness Communities with Jo Murdock

Jo Murdock is committed to creating wellness spaces and practices where self-care and healing is not a privilege but a right. She emphasizes the role that representation and shared experiences play in creating safe spaces to practice, where people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community are welcome in wellness spaces.

But her conversation with guest host Rachel Autumn isn’t just about obstacles; it’s a celebration of real solutions to address the root chakra issue of diversity in the wellness community. Rachel and Jo don’t shy away from discussing the financial realities of being yoga instructors and the steps they’ve taken to get a seat at the table and a place in front of a class of students.

Jo has championed developing scholarship funds at yoga studios and created a nonprofit, Reimagine Our Wellness, to foster accessible and equitable wellness spaces for people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Your Body is Not the Problem, with Kim Stacey

Your Body is Not the Problem, with Kim Stacey

A great episode with the incredible Kim Stacey today.

Kim has been an inspiration to me since I started changing the way I taught fitness to a body-neutral approach and is making waves in the industry.

We start by chatting a little bit about what brought Kim to fitness and why she feels she is right where she wants to be.

We talk about bodies.  Our body stories. Accepting our changing bodies and how to lead with self-compassion rather than judgement.

We end the episode by talking about when 'challenging' yourself becomes 'punishing' and about not making joyful movement another thing we 'should' aspire to.

Have a listen, let me know what you think and if you'd like to work with Kim or check out her platform:

Advocating for Strength at ALL Sizes, with Coach Damali Fraiser

What an episode! Another week, another dream guest!

This week we have Damali Fraiser,  Kettlebell Instructor, Nutrition Coach, and Author passionate about exploring fitness from an intersectional lens. *

Damali talks about the time after her debilitating ACL injury, which effectively ended her Muay Thai career, when "that unstable, big ball of metal, helped me one breath at a time, one step at a time to really bring back stability into my body..

Together we go deep and don't shy away from difficult conversations.

    We talked about:

    1. Damali’s story and how she came to find the non-diet space and specifically the Kettlebell Community as she spoke about in the anthology: "Deconstructing the Fitness Industrial Complex."
    2. The racist roots of diet culture and how we as coaches can help dismantle diet culture as opposed to becoming part of the problem.
    3. How it is so important to de-centre ourselves and be in community with people from diverse backgrounds.
    4. Damali’s real love of kettlebells and how they are such a versatile piece of kit that can be used anywhere and everywhere.

Through our conversation Damali recommended the following books as key reads for learning about the racist roots of diet culture:
'Deconstructing the Fitness Industrial Complex',  Damali herself wrote chapter 11 on the body as a site of oppression and freedom.
    '
Fearing the Black Body,' by Sabina Strings,  '
The Body Liberation Project' by Chrissy King and
'So You Want to Talk about Race' by  Ijeoma Oluo, amongst many others.

Diet Culture in the Church: Featuring Leslie Schilling

Diet Culture in the Church: Featuring Leslie Schilling

Leslie Schilling returns for part two of an insightful and thought-provoking conversation. In this episode, Leslie and host Heather Creekmore discuss the challenging promises of diet culture and the importance of accepting and respecting diverse body types. They delve into the factors that influence weight, including medications, illnesses, and surgeries, and debunk the myth that body weight can be changed through willpower alone.

The conversation takes a deep dive into the spread of diets like OPTAVIA and Gwen Shamblin's Weigh Down Workshop in churches, and the concerning trend of pastors and community members leading others towards these restrictive eating plans.

Leslie reflects on her own journey from placing hope in diets to realizing that Jesus is the only rescue needed. The episode also explores the intersection of faith, health, and accessibility to nutritious food. Leslie highlights the privilege of easy access to grocery stores and acknowledges that not everyone has the same advantages. She challenges the notion that nutrition should be the sole focus of our relationship with God, reminding listeners that social determinants of health, trauma, and medications greatly impact one's well-being.

Throughout the conversation, Leslie and Heather touch on various topics including shame, the objectification of women within Christian communities, the impact of purity culture, and the intergenerational transmission of body image issues and eating disorders. They also express excitement about Leslie's new book which tackles these issues in an unprecedented way and delves into the infiltration of diet culture in safe spaces like schools.

Listeners are encouraged to question external controls and seek inner wisdom, as well as to challenge the messages of diet culture that pervade churches and places of worship. need for safe spaces that promote body acceptance and eliminate harmful messaging tied to worthiness. Ultimately, this conversation serves as a call to remove the lens of diet culture from our interpretation of biblical teachings and to prioritize loving well above arbitrary standards of appearance and perfection.

201 | Anula Maiberg of Sixth Street Pilates on the potato method, impostor syndrome, rethinking 'body diversity' and more!

A few years ago I realized my body is something called hypermobile meaning my joints easily move beyond the normal range expected. While I loved teaching and practicing yoga, I wanted to try something for more strengthening. My best friend at the time was training to become a pilates instructor giving me the ideal opportunity to become her Guinea pig and explore pilates. Turns out I loved it. When I moved to NYC I hoped I'd find a studio I loved. Luckily, I stumbled upon Six Street Pilates and discovered the very cool owner Anula. From her style, to her instagram, to her philosophy and teaching I knew I wanted to have her on the podcast, attend her all her classes, and become her friend. We struggled to find a time to sit down to record this between her travel schedule and mine this fall so eventually we settled on recording this late one evening. We're both pretty sleepy and loopy by the end which makes the episode weird and special. We discuss community, being 'familiar strangers,' in-person connections, the Potato Method, what pilates is, and it’s history, the combination of pilates and art, impostor syndrome, feeling bad and that being okay, depression, the problem with the term ‘body diversity,’ and so much more.
