    Paul Thomas Anderson

Ever wondered how a director can weave an intricate story with a star-studded cast, yet make you deeply invested in each character? That's the genius of Paul Thomas Anderson, and we talk all about it in this week's episode. Starting off with Anderson's debut feature film, Hard Eight, and moving on to the popular Boogie Nights, we break down the compelling performances and share our personal experiences of discovering Anderson's world.

How can a movie over three hours long keep you engaged? Anderson achieves this with Magnolia, another masterpiece that we dissect, focusing on the heart-warming love story between John C. Riley and Melora Walters. We draw parallels to modern rom-coms like Valentine's Day and He's Just Not That Into You while appreciating Anderson’s knack for creating a complex, interconnected narrative.

Finally, we delve into Anderson's romantic comedy Punch Drunk Love, and scrutinize the duality of Adam Sandler's career, and his other cinematic gems like There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Inherent Vice. We discuss the brilliant performances by the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis and Joaquin Phoenix, and the unique visual language that Anderson employs. Join us for this scintillating journey through the works of one of Hollywood’s most influential contemporary directors.

    Episode 50 - Top 10 Movie Lists

What movies people love are often a reflection of what makes them who they are.For better or for worse we are going behind the curtain to see how the Born to Watch hosts tick, and what better way than our individual TOP 10 MOVIE LISTS.

Listen as we count down from 10 to 1, discussing a little about each choice we make and learning little by little the chaos that forms Born to Watch. As mates for over 35 years we have seen so many movies together and it was that love of watching and discussing those movies that led to the birth of the podcast. Even though we know a lot about each other we have never sat down and done a list of our favourite movies.

We each have very different tastes in movies and we think that is what makes Born to Watch so much fun to listen to but in today's episode there is no place to hide. We will lay ourselves at the mercy of the fans and they will either gain some or lose some respect for us in the process.

This was a fun episode to prepare for and really got all of us thinking about the movies that meant the most to us. We have no doubt by the end of Episode 50 that you will know a little more about each of us, and we are ok with that.

Episode 70 - Philip Seymour Hoffman: The Actor's Struggle

Episode 70 - Philip Seymour Hoffman: The Actor's Struggle

Few actors are as fun to watch as Philip Seymour Hoffman. He could play anything and go anywhere: Comedy - Drama - Arthouse - Blockbuster. A true actor's actor with rare mass appeal. Over the course of his career, he gave us an amazing array of unforgettable characters. From the vulnerable to the charismatic to the downright disturbed.

Unfortunately, Hoffman’s remarkable life and career would come to an abrupt end on Superbowl Sunday 2014 due to drug intoxication. Few people knew the extent of his inner struggles and, by the end, he was too far gone to be saved. The same intensity that made him a great actor, also fed his demons as an addict.

In this episode, the guys pore over his impressive filmography, from The Big Lebowski to 25th Hour. They're big fans -- but then again, who isn't?  They also discuss the inner turmoil that boiled beneath the surface and detail what went down in his lonely, final days. All that and much, much more (expect some Al Pacino and Truman Capote impressions)!

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico...it very well may be your last! Our latest look at crime cinema has us trudging through the muck of Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, director Sam Peckinpah's unforgiving neo-western from 1974. But before we descend into oblivion, we load up a Blue Plate Special where we discuss Kathryn Bigelow's appropriately titled Strange Days, parse the latest David Cronenberg release Crimes of the future, and celebrate the dearly departed character acting legend Phillip Baker Hall. Upon eventually taking the off-ramp to Hell, we consider the game changing filmography of Peckinpah, the beauty of Warren Oates, and weigh what exactly today's film in question adds to the genre complexion of New Hollywood's cynicism. Hey ihr lieben Fessis! #fessis
