Episode 48: Don Long, Bootstraps Theology

Episode 48: Don Long, Bootstraps Theology

Losing both parents at 12, Don Long quickly figured out how to navigate the world in what he calls, “bootstraps theology,” figuring life out on his own and taking no punches. But Don’s theology only got him into trouble, even a knife fight. A loving step mother and caring mentors guided Don to the only source to really pull him out of his bootstraps–Jesus Christ.

Don never thought he would make it past 18. But a kind mentor brought him to church. Don said of his early church days, "I literally would slip and sit in the back row. And then before the 'men' was done with 'amen,' I was out of there." God answered Don's desperate prayer to be able to read and understand the Bible, and from that moment, his life was changed. Don is now a pastor at Valley Church in West Des Moines, Iowa, where he heads up Valley Global missions.

How This Choice I Made In College Changed Everything – We Can Do Better

In this episode:  I wish what I’m about to share was an anomaly. Unfortunately, this story is more the norm than not. I decided to share it because so many of even my closest friends do not understand the hardship associated with this situation.  So many people suffer with the same dilemma. The financial burden that is student loans and just getting an education. This is my personal story.

Ep 202: Our Hedgelords And Saviors

OMG Leave me ALONE!! I’m trying to sacrifice a goat to our lord and savior Lucifer (from Cinderella). Too bad that bitch is dead. But Batman, the one true hedgelord, taught me that there is one thing that trumps all powers in the cosmos: MONEY! Blood Diamonds black as my soul. So in this episode my orderlies probe into the depths of the depraved world of our Capitalist Gods, and finally prove that nothing else matters but the ALMIGHTY dollar 💰.

    S3E21: A Low-Resolution Discussion of Sampling Distributions

In this week's episode Greg and Patrick discuss the critical distinction between sample distributions and sampling distributions, and explore all the different ways in which sampling distributions are foundational to how we conduct research. Along the way they also mention Starbucks jazz, one item tests, hot pockets, delusions of grandeur, Tetris and Pong, drawing inappropriate distributions, magical properties, texting pictures of kindle pages, Roman arches, 1970s graphics, never saying never, mumbling, Greenday, ignoring Roy Levy, real life bootstrap, and Goodnight Gracie.

    Acting White

    Acting White

Two amazing humans navigate the gray as they discuss the concept of acting white. Too often, the world asks people of color to do the "white thing" because that's considered the norm. Even if people of color were to fit into the white norm, they will still be behind the curve, because that is how our society is built. Our systems are designed to uphold whiteness, so acting white will never be enough. We challenge our listeners to ask a different question - instead of "Why don't they just..." ask "How might we?"

An Undaunted Spirit Made A Difference In The Aviation Industry

Michael Chowdry, founder of Atlas Air, lived life with passion and enthusiasm. His wife Linda created a special memoir to honor Michael's drive, creativity, charismatic personality and his love of aviation. Her book, "No Man's Son - A Flight from Obscurity to Fame" is the story about her immigrant/entrepreneur husband who came to this country with just about nothing and, through hard work and an undaunted spirit, started several aviation companies, including the highly successful Atlas Air Cargo, which is still running strong today. #67: Matt Robinson | Bissell Brothers

#67: Matt Robinson | Bissell Brothers

We decided it was time to do things quite a bit differently this week. Noah tries to clarify a misperception about himself and the guys talk unseen baggage, which slides into what is far and away the most personal episode of Graining In to date.
Matty's positive, boisterous, almost Golden Retriever-like personality suits his profession just about as much as possible. But the path he took to get to where he is today is nothing short of astounding. He gets extremely candid with Noah about losing his father to cancer during high school, forming an addiction to opioids that grew to be nothing short of extreme, his multiple suicide attempts, and a year-long sentence in jail. The account of the hole he found himself in and the lengths he took to pick himself up is occasionally shocking and often painful, but is above all else a deeply and profoundly inspiring experience. Regardless of how self-hatred, addiction, and death have factored into your life, there are undeniable threads of universality in his story that can't help but boost your drive to be a more compassionate and grateful person.
Rest assured though - despite its heaviness, the conversation is still chocked full of the (healthy) self-deprecation and lack of pretension of a normal episode, just with a tear or two on the side.
Do yourself a favor and listen in... Your heart will thank you.
