European Super League v2: Reaction and Concerns

European Super League v2: Reaction and Concerns

    Hello Rank Squad!

It's an important topic on today's Ranks FC, discussing the new proposals that have surfaced for a European Super League after a ruling by the European Court of Justice that both they and UEFA have claimed to be a victory. This standoff doesn't seem to be going away, so Rank God Sam Tighe joins Jack to break it all down.

After UEFA's processes last time round were deemed to be anti-competitive and unfair, the ESL have proposed their tournament again, but does this ruling matter if UEFA have actually changed their processes since last time anyway? We discuss the fallout from this, before digging into the actual proposed tournament itself.

We explain the new format and the tiers it would entail, before raising our concerns - protectionism and anti-competitiveness for the 16 teams at the very top, as well as lack of appropriate reward for new teams who break into the European places, and ask the big question: just because UEFA and FIFA have their issues, should we really be putting football in the hands of those who have obvious self-interest in their own clubs by letting them rule as a cabal?

The Super League is a complex and multi-layered issue, but we hope we've broken it down to give you at least something to have a think about.

    It's Ranks!

And remember, if you’d like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

Jan (@JanAageFjortoft) and Markus (@MarkusFjortoft) break down the Leverkusen versus Dortmund showdown, highlighting Schick's return and Dortmund's strategic approach. Leverkusen's 14-game winning streak ended despite dominating possession, with Ryerson netting his third goal of the season

We discuss Dortmund's challenging run, including victories against Milan and a draw with Leverkusen, with upcoming tests against Stuttgart, Leipzig, and PSG awaiting. Stuttgart's Guirassay and Undav shine, securing a 2-0 win over Bremen. Leipzig's Openda continues his impressive form with a 2-1 victory against Heidenheim. Augsburg has gone six games unbeaten under coach Jess Thorup, claiming a 2-1 win over Eintracht.

In the relegation fight, six teams are separated by four points, intensifying the battle at the bottom of the table. Köln clinches a crucial 1-0 win in a relegation battle, Bochum secures their first home win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Wolfsburg, and Gladbach edges out Hoffenheim 2-1.

Round 10: Why Is Tuchel So Furious?! Who's Who In The German Football World? Kane Mania!

It was a Bayern masterclass in Der Klassiker as they dominated Dortmund from start to finish, but it was Thomas Tuchel who stole the headlines as he confronted his critics, including the legendary Lothar Matthäus. Olaf Scholz und seine Augenklappe haben eine Partei wieder in die Schlagzeilen gebracht, die auch in den 2000er Jahren für großes Aufsehen sorgte - die Piraten-Partei. Round 2: Too Soon To Judge Dortmund? High-Flying Leverkusen! Union TOP!

Round 2: Too Soon To Judge Dortmund? High-Flying Leverkusen! Union TOP!

The second week of Bundesliga is concluded, and reporting from a hotel room in Manchester, Jan (@JanAageFjortoft) and Markus  (@MarkusFjortoft) assess Dortmund's unconvincing start to the season, while Leverkusen, in contrast, are looking increasingly likely to contend right at the very top this season. RB Leipzig's second half comeback ensured they're back on track after last weekend's loss to Leverkusen, while Harry Kane ensured he's off to a high-flying start to his Bundesliga career. Lots to unpick, as Jan and Markus also provide their insights on the standout player of the round, including a Bundesliga debutant and a striker with Norwegian top-flight experience.
