Daniel and Sonia are both deeply involved in the mental health space, particularly in the tech and innovation aspects. They are part of a fund that invests in startups focused on brain health and mental health. Their portfolio includes various companies working in areas like psychedelics, drug development, neuromodulation, brain-computer interfaces, and precision psychiatry.
They have invested in approximately 22 companies, which is a significant undertaking due to the diverse nature of their investments. Their efforts involve extensive research, interaction with startups, research institutes, fellow investors, and fundraising from individuals interested in contributing to the mental health space.
The discussion touches on the nature of investors in the mental health and brain health sectors. While the risk associated with startups in these areas is significant, they believe in the potential for innovation to make a substantial impact on mental health. They acknowledge that not all startups will succeed, but the hope is that the successful ones will outweigh the losses, ultimately benefiting those suffering from mental health conditions.
They also delve into the topic of investing in psychedelics. The conversation explores the various theories regarding how psychedelics might positively impact mental health and the potential for modifying psychedelics to harness their therapeutic effects without hallucinations.
Sonia and Daniel discuss their favorite recent developments among the companies they've invested in. Sonia highlights a precision psychiatry company that is working on using AI to analyze fMRI brain scans remotely, which could lead to more precise diagnostics for mental health conditions. Daniel shares exciting news about companies developing compounds derived from psychedelics that focus on enhancing neuroplasticity without hallucinogenic effects.
They also touch on their unique approach to investing in the mental health space, which combines traditional and innovative solutions. While there are other investors in mental health and tech, they feel their specific combination of interests and focus is unique.
The conversation ends with a reflection on the importance of mental health and how the emerging innovations in the field may help address the global mental health crisis.

Co-hosted by Ben Goertzel, Lisa Rein, and Grace the Robot, with special guest Rachel St.Clair, Co-founder and CEO of Simuli.
Rachel StClair is an AI scientist and entrepreneur who just received her PhD in complex systems and Brain Sciences and went on to co-found the AGI hardware company Simuli, making processors that use advanced math and an innovative hardware layout to process more information per transistor by compressing information before processing.
Rachel’s current work focuses on new learning algorithms for AGI and all things consciousness, intelligence, and AGI-related. She is a leading thinker on the intersection of computing, math & neuroscience, has published more than 20 papers, and is a Fellow at the Center for the Future Mind.
Episode 2’s main focus is a fast-paced discussion between Ben Goertzel and Rachel StClair covering the basics, and then diving deeper, into the mathematical theories behind AGI-specific hardware and the advanced forms of resource management used by Simuli’s processors.

Can thought-power control the world outside our heads? Thanks to new brain-machine interface technology, the answer is yes. But the real question is whether it can it help us control the world inside our heads. In the Season 3 opener of Soonish we meet Ariel Garten, co-founder of Interaxon, a Canadian startup that’s one of the first to offer a consumer neurofeedback device. Interaxon’s Muse headband reads brainwaves to help people with the sometimes vexing task of meditation. It points toward an era when may be able to control our brain states and share our thoughts directly with our computers, and with each other. And there are startling implications—not just for our capabilities as humans, but also for our privacy and individuality.
Featured guests: Ariel Garten, Sam Langer, Mary Lou Jepsen.
