Secrets and Sickness with Dr. Barrett Rollins
The book “In Sickness: A Memoir” shares the unbelievable story of Dr. Barrett Rollins, professor at Harvard Medical School and Chief Scientific Officer Emeritus at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and his wife Dr. Jane Weeks, a prominent researcher at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In 2008, Dr. Rollins discovered a secret his wife had been keeping from him …. she had been suffering from untreated metastatic breast cancer for six years. As the couple went about their public roles as authorities on cancer research and treatment, Dr. Rollins helped his wife continue to hide her breast cancer and delay treatment, until it was too late. Dr. Roy Jensen, vice chancellor and director of The University of Kansas Cancer Center, speaks with Dr. Rollins about his journey, the cancer research community’s reaction to his wife’s diagnosis and death, complex questions about healthcare, relationships and medical ethics, as well as why he decided to publish a memoir about his experience.

On episode 150, we welcome Dr. Mikkael Sekeres to discuss the social and political climate that fostered the necessity to create the FDA, medical charlatans and the history of pseudo-medicine, the necessity of clinical trials for creating safe and effective medications, why anecdotal evidence isn’t equivalent to scientific validation, the FDA’s decision to remove the breast cancer indication for the drug Avastin and Genentech’s decision to fight it, Mikkael’s personal experience during that hearing while a member of the jury, the public’s distrust of the FDA and where it stems from, Genentech spin-doctoring data to make their case for the safety and efficacy of Avastin, why mostly harmful medications should be removed from circulation if proven so, and how the FDA decides on which drugs to approve and which ones to recommend removing.
Dr. Mikkael A. Sekeres is Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Hematology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and former Chair of the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee of the FDA. Ep 44 - Breast Cancer Awareness - Kym Foust Shares Her Journey
💜In this episode we are talking about breast cancer and breast cancer awareness. Starting in October of 2020 #SoooBoca began a collaboration with West Boca Medical Center | The Breast Center.
This month, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Kym Foust, who is currently in remission. A mom and teacher in Parkland, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2019 and had treatment at West Boca Medical Center. Kym shares her journey with us today in regard to having chemo, surgery, radiation, a year of preventative “light” chemo and long term medication.
We chat about:
- Cancer ghosting
- How you can help someone going through this, emotionally and practically, during the holidays and beyond
- What continued limitations linger after the harder treatment is done and how to be there for someone
- What’s helpful to say and what not to say to someone going through or post treatment
- Gift suggestions beyond the list that every internet site offers
Join me for this episode to learn more from Kym.
