Then we'll be unpacking pregnancy anxiety and fear related to birth too! This is actually a topic I'm really passionate about, and one of the main reasons I started Mommy Labor Nurse (and this podcast!) to begin with!!

#18 A Smoother Birth With "Spinning Babies"

Are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant soon? If so, you should know about the incredible philosophy and practice known as 'Spinning Babies'. This technique is a physiological approach to preparing for birth. It involves techniques and an awareness of the soft tissue, physiological aspects, and some physical aspects that can help tune practitioners into why babies linger in certain positions during pregnancy or labor. It turns out that a baby's position can have an impact on labor patterns - and this can indicate if a baby is malpositioned. Spinning Babies is incredibly helpful in addressing things like inadequate cervical dilation, pain during pregnancy, funky labor patterns, labors that stall out - all situations that often result in a C-sections or Pitocin when, in reality, it’s the body sounding the alarm that baby is not in an ideal position.

Our guest today Nicole Morales is a midwife, author and spinning babies expert. She helps bring an awareness to birth and labor outcomes not typically found in an OB or hospital setting. So if you're wise, hire a Spinning Babies trained doula or midwife at your next birth to help avoid unnecessary interventions!

Episode 54 - Vaginal Breech VBAC birth in an MLU - Louisa's story

Episode 54 - Vaginal Breech VBAC birth in an MLU - Louisa's story

In this episode, I am chatting to Louisa, a mum of 3, who recently gave birth in a Midwife Led Unit to a breech baby.

Louisa had a C-section with her first baby who was also breech and then went on to have a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) for her 2nd.

Her preparation for her 3rd baby was very thorough, in order to achieve a similar experience to her 2nd birth.

After realising at the end of the pregnancy that her baby was breech, and clearly very comfortable in that position, she sought out help and support to achieve a vaginal breech birth.

She looked into the opti breech project and talked to others like Kemi @kemibirthjoyjohnson, Laura @laura_lemontreebirth Zara @doulabud and Sheryl @simply_natal_healing_birth. She also listened to Dr Stu @birthinginstincts on the Better Birth podcast and used the skills of her hypnobirthing teacher from @loveyourbirth_training.

Around 1 in 25 women will face decisions around how to give birth to their bottom first babies! But did you know the options are more than simply 'have a caesarean'? From helping your baby to turn head down, to physiological/vaginal breech birth, these little discussed alternatives are explained in this episode.

Joining me this week is Dr Shawn Walker, founder of The Breech Birth Network and Midwife Emma Spillane. Both heading up breech teams at large trusts, they bring some real expert insight into the topic of breech birth. The pair bring the perfect balance of the intellectual understanding of the risks and benefits of each choice, whilst providing a nurturing and women centred approach to the episode.

With a real focus on informed choice, you will feel equipped to open up conversations with your providers about your own birth experience if you find yourself needing to make decisions around breech birth.
