    Andre Fili - Part 1

    Andre Fili - Part 1

UFC featherweight veteran Andre Fili joins Brendan Fitzgerald on the newest episode of Fitz Nation.

Fili is coming off a disappoining 'no contest' result in his last fight, where he was showing arguably the best form of his career before an eye poke.  He has been in the UFC a long time and really has come a long way since coming from a broken home in Washington state.

He has grown into a leader at Team Alpha Male in Sacramento and has much to be proud of, but of course, his focus is on the future and winning a UFC championship.

The show is back!  I just could not stay away from the podcast game.  I've been doing a lot of thinking recently about why I wanted to start a podcast originally and what I get out of it.  I truly missed the long form interviews with fighters, coaches and others in this UFC world.  What started as Fitz & A Fighter then turned into my solo project the Brendan Fitz Podcast.  Well, I've combined the two ideas.  The Brendan Fitz Podcast is back, but with the focus being back on interviews with guests.  I'm really excited to get back on this project and it was good to check in with my friend and MMA coach Tyson Chartier.

We talk about what Fight Island was like for him and his team when Calvin Kattar was in Abu Dhabi for a main event back in July, how he got into martial arts in the first place, and his chance meeting with Dana White to ultimately steer him toward MMA and the UFC.

Questions about Brendan's audition prep? I'm happy to answer them! - Click here to schedule a 30 minute meeting!

A San Diego native and avid disc golfer, Brendan Fitzgerald joined the St. Louis Symphony in September 2019 after spending two seasons with the Seattle Symphony. During this time, he performed on numerous recording projects with Ludovic Morlot, including the recent commercial releases of Marc-André Dalbavie’s Cello Concerto, John Luther Adams’ Become Desert, and Berlioz’s Requiem.

Fitzgerald began his musical studies in elementary school on piano and trumpet before discovering the electric bass in eighth grade. He played in multiple punk, metal, and acoustic folk bands before deciding to devote himself more fully to the study of orchestral literature, studying with Travis Gore, a current member of the Seattle Symphony. After some time in the San Diego Youth Symphony, he attended Interlochen Arts Academy as a senior, before pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Double Bass Performance at Northwestern University. In 2012, he enjoyed a revelatory summer at Domaine Forget, where he worked closely with renowned pedagogues Paul Ellison and David Allen Moore. He then attended the Aspen Music Festival in 2016 and 2017 as a fellowship recipient, performing alongside members of the Pittsburgh, Dallas, St. Louis, and San Francisco symphonies.

Fitzgerald’s strongest influence and mentor is his undergraduate teacher, Northwestern University bass professor Andy Raciti, with whom he had the honor to perform alongside as a frequent substitute musician with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He is excited to begin work with Stepháne Denève and the rest of his SLSO colleagues, as well as enjoy the finest barbecue in the country.

Fans have also gotten to know Paul more over the last couple years with his work as a commentator on UFC broadcasts.  He helped launch Dana White's Contender Series in 2017, when he was paired with Fitz.  The two became fast friends and carried their broadcasting relationship to this episode of Fitz & A Fighter!

We all know Michael Chiesa as a UFC contender, previously in the lightweight division and now in the welterweight division.  We know him as a standout grappler and winner of The Ultimate Fighter: Live to get into the UFC.

But what we didn't know until now is his tumultuous childhood and journey to becoming a fighter.  He pays homage to his grandfather, who died tragically and suddenly.  He talks about the relationship he had with his mother, and why he needed to make a change to his living situation just before he turned 16.  And, he talks about the relationship he had with his father and the heartbreak of losing him while he was in Las Vegas for The Ultimate Fighter.
