Unveiling BYU's Newest Class: The "Philoswiftie" Class, A Taylor Swift Extravaganza!

Unveiling BYU's Newest Class: The "Philoswiftie" Class, A Taylor Swift Extravaganza!

A new Taylor Swift class has begun at BYU. The class is focused on the "Philosophy of Taylor Swift." The professor calls this "philoswiftie." Is this too superficial for a serious university, or is it a good way to bring students into a deeper discipline and meaningful, learning discussions?

The professor seems to be obsessed with Taylor Swift and he has gone to three concerts in the last year alone, has a full-size cutout of the leggy pop star in his office, and tries to incorporate her lyrics into all of his discussions.

New BYU President Shane Reese - Strike Out Or Home Run?

Yesterday Elder Holland announced that the current Vice-President of Academics, Shane Reese, would be the next President of BYU beginning May 1, 2023.

Who is Shane Reese and is this a positive move? What has Reese said and done in the past that would give a clue as to how he will run things at Brigham Young University? How centered is he on Spencer W. Kimball's Second Century speech outlining the vision for BYU?

    BYU Antiracism Project

    BYU Antiracism Project

BYU has an Antiracism project. As one of its goals, it is building a database of antiracism resources for BYU faculty to use for teaching their college students. It is essentially a hard-left, Marxian stew of the most prominent actors in Critical Race Theory and antiracism.

The most dangerous development in a gospel environment is conflating the words of the prophet of the Restored Church with the words of the prophets of the Religion of Academia. We see this consistently at BYU and unfortunately, even at church.

160: The Black Menaces | Televising the Mormon Revolution

160: The Black Menaces | Televising the Mormon Revolution
In less than one year, five students at Brigham Young University have amassed a social media following of nearly 1,000,000 people. The group, calling themselves the Black Menaces, create videos online that have been liked and shared more than 25 million times and messages supported by celebrities and influencers around the globe.

So, what are these BYU college students doing to create such a buzz?

Using a cell phone camera and microphone, the BlackMenaces are exposing the candid reactions of BYU students through questions about race and social justice. It’s no surprise, given the nature of LDS/LGBTQ policies, that the most viral videos produced by the BlackMenaces are directly related to the LGBTQ community and the Mormon church's treatment of queer people.

We’ve invited the Menaces into the studio to share their “revolution” with the LatterGayStories community.

In this episode we dive deep into the BlackMenace story and learn more about the people behind the TikTok and Instagram videos. Why did they start the social media project, and what they’ve learned in the process? This episode is a candid and honest discussion about Mormonism’s racial and prejudicial problems.

Gary Ernest Smith (Part TWO): Western Landscape Painter - Epi. 140, Host Dr. Mark Sublette

Gary Ernest Smith (Part TWO): Western Landscape Painter - Epi. 140, Host Dr. Mark Sublette

Part two of a two-part podcast with Gary Ernest Smith

This is the second episode of Gary Ernest Smith's artist story,  we discussed his field paintings and how they resonate with not only myself but with others.  This is a wonderful podcast to watch as Gary shows some of his paintings.   He's been painting his entire whole life and he tells us some very interesting stories including how he got represented by Ray Johnson at Overland.  Gary discusses the positive and negative of having mainly one gallery represent one's work.
Gary has incredible words of wisdom about how to be successful in the arts. Gary even says that there were some things that he would have done differently that didn't work out how he expected. For any of those artists out there who might be in that same type of boat that Gary was in, this podcast will prove to be very helpful and full of insight. Gary Ernest Smith is just a tremendous artist and I'm happy to have him on this two-part episode of Art Dealer Diaries.

Gary Ernest Smith (Part ONE): Western Landscape Painter - Epi. 139, Host Dr. Mark Sublette

This is part one of a two-part podcast.
Part one of a two-part podcast.

Now Gary Ernest Smith is a guy who has been painting basically his whole life and he tells us some very interesting stories, not only of how he got to do what he did in life, but also how he became the successful western landscape painter he is today. I love that about doing a podcast by the way. I get to be a part of that moment in time when an artist decides "this is what I have to do."

Early on in his artistic journey, Gary was drafted into the Vietnam war. He ended up becoming a war artist for the army, working as a teacher at a military school, and finally just came to the realization that he had to create amazing pieces of art.

Gary has incredible words of wisdom about how to be successful in the arts. Gary even says that there were some things that he would have done differently that didn't work out how he expected. For any of those artists out there who might be in that same type of boat that Gary was in, this podcast will prove to be very helpful and full of insight.
