USTA App premieres and Mike Eden: tennis collector extraordinaire

Talking Tennis Southern Style with Michael Hughes, Alanna Broderick and Mike Eden

USTA’s digital presence took a major step forward with the release of its new app. USTA staffers Michael Hughes and Alanna Broderick describe its many features including listing WTN real-time status and rankings, recent tournament and USTA League results and other info all tennis players need at their fingerprints. The Apple version is available now, with the Android version set to release within the next month. Mike Eden is a former USTA Kentucky President whose passion is collecting tennis history. Among the hundreds of cans of balls, racquets, books, magazines and other historic memorabilia in his home, he calls one item the “holy grail:” the first metal tennis can from 1926, which makes him the proud owner of the only unopened can on the planet. Our highlights include junior Ellison Reynoldson, of Camden, Tenn., and 2022 USTA Southern junior award winners Riley Crowder, of Dothan, Ala., and Jelani Sarr, of Pooler, Ga.

    Ladyhawke (1985)

    Ladyhawke (1985)

People are always complaining that Hollywood's run out of ideas: Everything's a remake or a sequel or a comic book movie. But in 1985, things were wild. Wanna make a movie about a guy who turns into a wolf and a chick who turns into a bird so that they can never be together? Go for it; we'll even throw in Matthew Broderick and a score by Alan Parsons.

The Shat Crew's been waiting a long time to do "Ladyhawke," but it took listener Jose to stand up, raise his sword high in the air, and dedicate this medieval fantasy in the name of true love. It's a movie that taught us not to take "Game of Thrones" for granted, a movie that Ash felt needed talking animals, and a movie that made Big D ponder life's big questions, like "Can a crossbow shoot a hawk in flight?" and "How does a werewolf get his clothes back?"

But most of all, "Ladyhawke" was a movie that bet on Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Alfred Molina being able to bring a wild-ass tale with a funky-ass soundtrack to life. How did they do? Listen and find out.

'You Can Count on Me' (ft. Dames Marvs of CF3: Cult Fans, Films & Finds)

'You Can Count on Me' (ft. Dames Marvs of CF3: Cult Fans, Films & Finds)

Writer/director Kenneth Lonergan won his first Academy Award for the acclaimed domestic drama Manchester by the Sea. But more than a decade and a half before that film, Lonergan burst onto the scene with his directorial debut, You Can Count on Me. Both movies tackle the fallout of family tragedies and feature standout performances.

You Can Count on Me focuses on the broken bond between a sister (Laura Linney) and brother (Mark Ruffalo). And while neither guest Dames Marvs -- from CF3: Cult Fans, Films & Finds -- have a sister, we both connected to the very grounded sibling dynamic. Moreover, Lonergan's naturalistic style of storytelling captures the profound truth that lies in the mundane.

Listen in as Dames and I break down Lonergan's film and discuss at length why we can always count on Ruffalo to deliver incredible performances.

    SYNOPSIS

Sammy (Laura Linney) is a single mother who is extremely protective of her 8-year old son (Rory Culkin). She is satisfied with living in the small town she grew up in and working in a local bank. When her brother Terry (Mark Ruffalo) visits, he fits the void in the life of both her and her son. Temporarily free of the constraints of single motherhood, she begins to break free of her normal routine. In a string of traumatic events, Sammy is torn between helping her brother and her maternal instinct to protect her son from getting hurt.

    The Cable Guy (1996)

    The Cable Guy (1996)

With Big D visiting Gene and Roger in Arizona, this week's "Shat The Movies" keyword is "friendship." And what better movie to exemplify friendship than Jim Carrey's smash '90s hit?

No, not "Dumb and Dumber" (which actually won in listener voting), but "The Cable Guy," a movie Roger Roeper can quote start to finish and Gene Lyons never had seen.

We called an audible this week, actually visited Medieval Times in Scottsdale, Ariz., and immediately recorded this candid review of a dark comedy largely unappreciated in its time.

"The Cable Guy" really caught out attention and unearthed some hot topics, including the ethics of hiring sex workers, the dynamics of one-sided friendships, the genius of Ben Stiller and Judd Apatow, the magic of stolen cable, Big D's dream party, Jim Carrey's gigantic paycheck, multilayered gags, false accusations, and a possible darker side to Carrey's character, Chip Douglas.

Oh, and we're still going to do "Dumb and Dumber." This podcast isn't a dictatorship.

    Episode 142 – Broderick Crawford

    Episode 142 – Broderick Crawford

A classic big screen tough guy, Broderick Crawford took home an Oscar for his turn as a fiery corrupt politico in All the King's Men and he kept the streets safe on Highway Patrol. In his two Suspense appearances, Crawford delivered his powerful screen charisma in two tales of crooks facing the heat from their fellow rogues: "Dutch Schultz" (originally aired on CBS on October 26, 1953) and "Parole to Panic" (originally aired on CBS on April 12, 1954).

Godzilla 1998 (ft. Mackenzie Marlowe): Godzillavangelists Episode 14

For years, Godzilla '98 has been buried by Ryan, hoping never that the Godzillavangelists would have to speak its cursed name. But when G98 arises from its tomb, our holy duty is to watch and mock its wacky ass.

Mackenzie Marlowe joins the Godzillavangelists to marvel at one of the greatest bad movies of all time. Meet lovable characters such as the sexless worm scientist, the pathetic incompetent journalist, and the goofy coffee-hunting Frenchman! And of course, born-pregnant, fish-gobbling, fast-running GINO.

Next episode is a double feature of Godzilla vs. Monster Zero and Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster! Lots of '60s goodness incoming!

    Ladyhawke

This 1985 fantasy film is remembered fondly by our generation, but may not hold up under re-examination. We look at the studio process it was made under, while thinking about how it tries to subvert our expectations of fairy tales.

So Ferris Bueller plays White Saviour to a bunch of courageous, black, Civil War soldiers in the Next 151 Project. And, against the odds, it really works. This remains a powerful film 30 years on, especially when the focus shifts (at least somewhat) from Matthew Broderick to Denzel WashingtonMorgan Freeman and friends. Broderick (and the man he portrays, Colonel Shaw) might be in over his head, but that benefits the character and the movie. It’s a flicker show filled with great moments and exceptional battle scenes. Ed Zwick has directed a few underrated motion pics, but his Civil War opus is his most-meaningful accomplishment.

    WarGames (1983)

    WarGames (1983)

"WarGames" changed the way '80s kids looked at video games, computers, and the threat of nuclear annihilation. But in the age of smartphones and wireless Internet, does this 1983 geek-gasm still hold up?

The original Shat The Movies threesome teams up on this episode to discuss Matthew Broderick's charm, a hotter Ally Sheedy, the difference between code names and acronyms, and drug use among Missile Command personnel.

Gene Lyons gives a history lesson on the 1980 Titan missile disaster, and Roger Roeper goes full Q Anon with his theory that the WOPR supercomputer really was the mind of a sadistic son who felt neglected by his creator.

Big D reveals that he might have forgotten he grew up rich, and we debut our new segment: Shat on Workplace Safety.
