S3E63 Rediscipling the White Church with David Swanson (REPRISE)

S3E63 Rediscipling the White Church with David Swanson (REPRISE)

REPRISE - Ken welcomes Rev. David Swanson, author of the powerfully provocative book, Redisciplining the White Church from Cheap Diversity to True Solidarity. Once again on the podcast, two white guys talk about race - specifically race in the American white evangelical church. David started a church in the historic Bronzeville district in the South Side of Chicago. David tells the story of his own awakenings. The white church is predisposed to resist conversation about racial history, white dominance, and the harmful impact of the conservative propaganda machine.  The two share their journeys of self-discovery - awakening to the problems of whiteness.  Swanson quotes many, like Frederick Douglass, James Baldwin, and Bryan Stevenson. Ida B. Wells  (who battled lynching in the late 1800s) challenged Dwight L. Moody. The Emmett Till Law of 2020 was just signed the week of this recording, making lynching a federal hate crime.

Structural, systemic, and institutional racism is a reality that must be taken into account. David is a great proponent of the Civil Rights Tour

    Who we are

Block Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.

We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.

    Ground-level coverage

Our neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this  ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a  neighborhood.

Stories that matter to you — every day

Since our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans.

We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them.

Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

ComEd Pursues Equity as it Decarbonizes

ComEd Pursues Equity as it Decarbonizes

Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) is one of the nation’s largest utilities, serving Chicago. Last month, ComEd announced it is spending $113 million a year on “income-tested programs” to slash energy use and energy bills for those who can least afford them, while combating climate change.

In this episode of Grid Talk, host Marty Rosenberg talks with Gil Quiniones who is the ComEd CEO. They’ll talk about initiatives to make sure disadvantaged communities and historically underserved communities are prioritized as the utility pursues decarbonization.

“It’s not just really deploying technologies. It’s how do we engage the community in the process of deploying those technologies in terms of STEM programs with the local schools as well as opportunities for workforce development, whether it’s directly for trade-type, craft-type jobs or being a utility professional engineer or scientist.”

Quiniones talks about opportunities related to the federal government’s $80 billion infrastructure spend on energy. Investing in communities is top priority.

“We want to make sure that we’re putting our customers at the center of this transition.”

You’ll also hear what ComEd is adding is it reimagines the grid.

Gil Quiniones was named CEO of ComEd in November of 2021 and oversees utility decisions that impact more than four million customers. Mr. Quiniones joined ComEd after spending a decade as the president and CEO of the New York Power Authority, the nation’s largest state-owned public power organization. He is an internationally recognized leader in modernizing power grids, and delivering clean, safe and affordable energy for customers, leading to economic and environmental benefits for diverse communities.

Mr. Quiniones holds a B.S. from De La Salle University in Manila. In 2020, he earned a Corporate Director Certificate at Harvard Business School.

    A.D. Q&A charting Bronzeville's transformation

    A.D. Q&A charting Bronzeville's transformation
This week, to close out Black History Month, we’re talking Bronzeville. The Black Metropolis south of the Loop along the lakefront has a rich history of culture and entrepreneurship. It’s been home to great writers, artists, musicians, politicians and intellectuals. Now it’s the subject of a new limited series from Crain’s. Hosted by Crain's residential real estate reporter Dennis Rodkin, the debut of Crain’s Four-Star Stories takes a look at the neighborhood’s recent real estate transformation. It charts Bronzeville’s history –– from the influx of Black Southerners during the Great Migration, through different eras of racial segregation, the rise and fall of its public housing towers, and the construction of the Dan Ryan Expressway, to today, when some of the neighborhood’s 3,000 vacant lots are being turned into new housing worth upwards of half a million dollars each. Rodkin and Sherry Williams, founder of the Bronzeville Historical Society, discuss what they are seeing on the ground in the neighborhood. Williams also explains her own family history coming to Bronzeville, and what she hears from her friends and neighbors about the booming real estate market. Both Rodkin and Williams also describe which Bronzeville real estate projects to watch for in the coming years.

This trailer previews what's at stake and what the future may hold.

    The Black Side of Milwaukee

    The Black Side of Milwaukee

The Milwaukee metropolitan area is the most segregated region in the entire U.S. It's been pronounced the "worst city for Black people".

Carla Cross has made a difference in this area through the real estate industry. Her company, Cross Management Services, helps commercial real estate projects meet their diversity and inclusion goals.

Over the last 20 years, she’s worked on projects such as the Fiserv Forum, Lambeau Field, Harley-Davidson Museum, and many more.

Learn about Carla Cross’s journey as Luis explains the unfortunate side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In this episode, you’ll learn about the city’s Black and White racial issues that have grown out of control over the last century.
