Long live The Brutes: Brutalist buildings in Sydney

They’re often derided, ignored, and under-loved. They’re in almost every city, they are buildings in the Brutalist architectural style - affectionately known as 'The Brutes'.

A chance encounter outside Sydney’s famous Sirius building, led author Heidi Dokulil to investigate everything about this architectural style for her new book, Sydney Brutalism.

Guest:Heidi Dokulil, design writer and author

Yasmeen Lari on Rethinking the Values of Architecture

Yasmeen Lari on Rethinking the Values of Architecture
As Pakistan's first female architect, Yasmeen Lari left a major imprint on the country's visual identity, with modern buildings like the Finance and Trade Centre, the Taj Mahal Hotel in Karachi, and the Pakistan State Oil Head Office. But her career later took a turn from working for the powerful few, towards assisting the most vulnerable members of society. She now focuses on the intersection of architecture, environmental activism and social justice, working to build sustainable structures for displaced people and helping to set up self-sufficient economies. She calls her approach Barefoot Social Architecture. The Museum wishes to thank The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation for their generous support of This Being Human.

Episode 142: The Music of the Spheres: On Jóhann Jóhannsson's "Last and First Men"

Episode 142: The Music of the Spheres: On Jóhann Jóhannsson's "Last and First Men"
Jóhann Jóhannsson was one of contemporary cinema's greatest score composers when he passed away in 2018 at the young age of 48. Last and First Men, his enigmatic directorial debut, was released shortly after in 2020. Based on a novel by the same name by the British science fiction writer Olaf Stapleton, the film offers a sustained meditation on the prospect of extinction, the eventuality of humanity's disappearance from the comos. In this episode, JF and Phil discuss the images and sounds of the film as they flicker and swell against the backdrop of nonbeing that envelops us all. The conversation touches on the idea of beauty, Brutalist architecture, modernism, and futurity. Episode 137: Brute Force: on Sunn O)))'s 'Life Metal'

Episode 137: Brute Force: on Sunn O)))'s 'Life Metal'
What Evil Dead 2 is to the Baroque, Sunn O))) is to Brutalism. Or more like: if the likening of Evil Dead 2 to the Baroque felt like a stretch in episode 136, the brutalist bona fides of Sunn O)))'s drone metal are incontestable. In this episode, their 2019 masterpiece Life Metal frames a conversation touching on 20th-century avant garde music, the tactility of sound, the metaphysics of the Kickass Riff, Aztec aesthetics, the virtues of impermanence, and of course, the sublime beauty of brutalist buildings. James Goldstein on John Lautner | Episode 11

James Goldstein on John Lautner | Episode 11

Our first in-person conversation, a sit down with James Goldstein - the detail & design oriented owner who spent much of his life perfecting the Sheats-Goldstein Residence, hand in hand with iconic architect John Lautner. You’ve seen his home in films and music videos (Big Lebowski, Snoop, Doja Cat), but never before has he shared so much information about process, influences and more.

You may recognize his presence from courtside NBA or recently being featured in Adam Sandler’s movie Hustle. He has 3 words on his business card, Fashion, Basketball, Architecture - and my goal in speaking to him was to really focus on the third, to continue driving awareness and education around Modernism. Take a seat next to The Dude & enjoy our conversation with Jimmy!

    IDLES

    IDLES

"We are not a punk band", is how lead singer Joe Talbot has described the sound of this Bristol band "IDLES", however we can't deny that IDLES does kind of have that punk energy when it comes to their music. Hard hitting, high energy but lyrically poignant, sarcastic and at times darkly comedic.

"IDLES" were formed in Bristol in the mid 2000's when after DJ'ing around the city a few of the members decided they wanted to create their own music. It took some time, and several line-up changes, before they finally found their sound, kicking off in 2015 with their debut EP's "Welcome" and "Meat/Meta". Since then they have released 3 full length studio albums, toured the world and remained humble. Joe says their ethos has always been to work hard and not seek gratitude, believing that if you stick to your guns, and your passions, everything will ultimately align. There is so much more to know, so we welcome you to join the conversation with Jay and Jesse and listen to some of their top "IDLES" picks. on this latest edition of Roots to Grooves".

Like other vaporwave subgenres, mallsoft has evolved since its creation. Initially defined by sampling and reverb, new mallsoft albums drift towards exploring new compositions and themes. While actual shopping malls are sliding into the dustbin of history, the idea of mall ambiance lingers with us. The essence of mallsoft transcends the physicality of shopping malls. Banal commercial architecture with powerful HVAC, weird acoustics, and a genial indifference to human emotions will remain with us long after the last shopping mall is torn down. New mallsoft seeks to capture that essence.

S1E1: Who are IDLES and where are they going?

With the recent release of the single, Mr. Motivator, we delve into the musical history and evolution of the self proclaimed "not a f*cking punk band," IDLES. In this episode, we break down IDLES' lyrical and musical content and try and predict where they are heading with their upcoming third album, Toneland. Exploring past musical influences ranging from Bauhaus to LIFE, we draw connections to similar style evolutions of Porridge Radio and Slaves. Lastly, we brave the political quagmire of the IDLES/Sleaford Mods social media fight and talk about music, class, and authenticity.
