Ep. 17 The Bread for Everybody with Adam Hiner & Maddie Hamann

Ep. 17 The Bread for Everybody with Adam Hiner & Maddie Hamann
In today’s society, so many people are being diagnosed with celiac disease, severe food allergies, or even just food sensitivities, and it’s often difficult to find delicious and healthy alternatives. That is why we were so excited to talk to Adam Hiner and Maddie Hamann, the founders of Live PACHA, about the bread they created to cater to this community, known as the “bread for everybody.”

Adam and Maddie are partners in both business and life and started the companies Live PACHA & Boochcraft from the ground up, on a mission to revolutionize healthy food & beverage products. Boochcraft, an organic hard kombucha label, has taken off in the beverage industry; Live PACHA, a gluten-free, vegan, Paleo, and certified organic bread company is the couple's latest business venture.

Adam and Maddie bring an ethical entrepreneurial approach to the table, as they prioritize environmental protection through Boochcraft and Live PACHA's 1% For The Planet pledge, meaning that 1% of all business sales are donated to environmental conservation and restoration efforts. Furthermore, Hiner and Hamann's businesses emphasize sustainable product packaging and responsible procurement strategies.

In their personal lives, health and wellness mean a lot to Adam and Maddie. Not only are they integral figures in San Diego’s acro-yoga community, but they also model organic and environmentally-conscious ways of life. Ultimately, they keep these important values as the backbone of their business models as well.

    Lil Bucks - Emily Griffith

Scaling a business and cementing your place in an emerging market is a special kind of struggle. While you’re busy building your own brand you’ve also got to be busy educating consumers about the market’s very existence. The appeal of all of this is of course if and when consumer trends shift, any company with a foothold sees massive growth and all the rewards that come with it. One needs to look no further than Tesla to see how proper timing and a few lucky breaks can launch a small startup into a Fortune 100 company. Our guest today is Emily Griffith, founder of Lil Bucks, and the emerging marketplace in question is centered all-around buckwheat. Buckwheat is a familiar dietary staple in other cultures around the world, but when it comes to America it’s still in its infancy. Buckwheat is naturally packed full of nutrients and antioxidants while at the same time being gluten-free since it’s a fruit seed and not a grain. So in following recent superfood trends, it checks a lot of the same boxes. The ability to educate and appeal to a mass audience will be the difference between ending up like Tesla or Fisker.

Listen in as we cover everything from why consumers don’t want to sacrifice taste for health, why she focused on building her brand before building her business, and how she owes her success to getting on the shelves of Whole Foods to a cleaning lady.

Episode 21-Special 1: The Wisdom and Soil Health Insights of Ira Wallace of Southern Exposure Seed Exchange

Episode 21-Special 1: The Wisdom and Soil Health Insights of Ira Wallace of Southern Exposure Seed Exchange
In preparation and celebration of World Soil Day on December 5, 2021, 4 The Soil and the Virginia Soil Health Coalition offer a special episode to hear and learn from the wisdom and insights of Ira Wallace of Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. In this episode, Ira shares about the importance of soil health to vegetable and food production, but specifically how soil health is relevant to seed saving, heirloom varieties, and land ownership. Mary Sketch and Jeff Ishee share their own excitement about different seed and heirloom varieties ranging from peanuts to kale. You can also learn how Ira and her colleagues at Southern Exposure Seed Exposure started to build soil health and renovate the soils early on in the history of their farming operation, which included multi-year cover cropping rotations and never leaving the soil bare during a fallow between crops.

Ira's one resource she would share with 4 The Soil: A Conversation podcast listeners is Margaret Roach's podcast A Way to Garden at https://awaytogarden.com/

"Hide and Shriek" (1938) and "Little Miss Pinkerton" (1943)

If you've ever wondered what it'd be like to see the Little Rascals go up against two vicious murderers ... then seek psychiatric help immediately!

Mystery to Me returns this week with a double-feature of two short films from the Our Gang series— alias The Little Rascals or Hal Roach's Rascals. Both shorts play with the detective genre. One is your average silly Our Gang fare. The other has actual death and an extended shoot-out scene.

Hide and Shriek is a short film that was released on June 18, 1938. It was directed by Gordon Douglas, and is the last ever Our Gang flick to feature the participation of creator Hal Roach. It stars Carl Switzer as Alfalfa — alias X-10 — Billie Thomas as Buckwheat — alias X-6 1/2 — Eugene Lee as Porky — alias X-6 — and Darla Hood as Darla. In this story, Alfalfa recruits his friends to his new detective agency ... but a jaunt in a haunted house soon proves that mystery-solving can be a bone-chilling profession. This was the 168th Our Gang film.

Little Miss Pinkerton is a 1943 Our Gang film directed by Herbert Glazer, starring Billie Thomas as Buckwheat, Billy Laughlin as Froggy, Janet Burston as Janet, and Robert Blake as Mickey. It was released on September 18, 1943. This was the 216th entry in the Our Gang series. In this film, the kids witness a brutal murder and get taken hostage. No, really! That's the plot.

Listen to the gang discuss Dashiell Hammett, the Pinkertons, the trailer for The Batman, and aging Áine’s frail health.

Ep 240: Science... sort of - Moon Rocks Don't Glow

Ep 240: Science... sort of - Moon Rocks Don't Glow

00:00:00 - Kelly is back and she's got an update on some scientists that seem to have found a way to stem the spread of the chytrid fungus affecting all those poor froggies. Hope on the horizon? Maybe, but it'll be a hard technique to apply large scale. We also spend some time talking about a Civil War story involving glowing wounds the help soldiers survive. A science fair project may have found the answer, but Ryan still thinks a body farm experiment needs to be done.

00:28:10 - A stiff drink used to be the only painkiller you might get. Kelly's drink isn't stiff but it still provokes a strong reaction: water kefir. After painstakingly explaining what is and how she made it, Abe and Ryan have nothing good to say. Abe tries to salvage the conversation with some Romantic Chemistry, but alas it falls a bit short. Ryan tries to avoid Kelly's wrath when talking about the Pinchgut Hollow Buckwheat Moonshine his Dad gave him.

00:40:50 - Did you know China has a rover on the moon? Turns out China has a rover on the moon. And it did some science! Researchers have announced that they've found a new type of lunar basalt. Sounds straightforward enough but Abe explains the complexities.

01:01:58 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like Chinese lunar rovers; most Americans don't even know they exist. Kelly has an e-mail from former guest of the show Zeka Kuspa, who wants to know if the now extinct Condor louse makes her list of eradicated parasites. Abe reads an e-mail from Steven who's asking for some help tracking down a particular SoCal beer. We don't have a specific answer, but it sounds like he just needs to keep trying Imperial Pilsners. Ryan rounds out the show with a new recurring donation from Leong all the way in Taiwan. Thanks, Leong! Ryan, of course, plugs his ongoing crowdfunding campaign, go watch the video and consider donating here!
