Episode 80 - The Wisdom of Crowds

When in doubt and data is insufficient who should you ask? If you had two lifelines, is it better to “Ask the Audience” or “Phone a friend”.

Episode 79 - Do you trust your team?

Episode 79 - Do you trust your team?

Imagine that you had hired a new person in your team. In a key project, she tried her best but failed and let the whole team down.

A few days later, another important project comes up. What would you do? Give her the role she was hired to do, or do it yourself? After all, it is a very important project.

This story from November last year from the US basketball league (NBA) is inspiring.

    Why Yellow Matters

    Why Yellow Matters

Why Yellow Matters is about communicating. Writing. Deciding. Understanding. Thinking things. Deciding things. Writing things. It is about brevity and balance. Cleverness and chaos and clarity. The hard things and the great things and opening yourself up to the zone. But most simply, it’s about taking the time to ask why. It is about how important it is sometimes, often, to take the time to think about what you’re saying and doing and why that matters to you and other people. Other human beings in the world. I didn’t set out to write this book. I just had one idea one day that I thought was important and I started writing it down.

    The Forgotten Carol

In this special Christmas episode, we take a look at a short section of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol that never seems to make the movie. It's a literary-cinematic montage where Scrooge and the Ghost of Christmas Present take wing across countryside and sea to get a deeper glimpse into the working persons holiday celebration during the industrial revolution.

102: The Intersection of Podcasting and Economic Development with Jennifer Olson

102: The Intersection of Podcasting and Economic Development with Jennifer Olson
In this episode of the Econ Dev Show, host Dane Carlson sits down with Jennifer Olson, Director of Business Development for the city of Marion, Illinois, discussing the impact of her podcast "Small Town, Big Business" and delving into the economic development and revitalization efforts in her town. They discuss the challenges and rewards of running a successful podcast, the importance of small businesses in rural communities, and the significance of tourism in Marion. The episode begins with an insightful discussion about the "Small Town, Big Business" podcast, co-hosted by Jennifer Olson. Exploring the triumphs and tribulations of small businesses in rural areas, the podcast serves as a platform to inspire others towards entrepreneurship. Jennifer talks about the importance of consistency in releasing episodes, the impact of the podcast's storytelling on weaving deeper connections between local businesses and the community, and the often underestimated potency of mentorship in entrepreneurial success. Diving deeper, Dane and Jennifer touch on Marion's strategic position as a hub for industries like manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, and retail. Notwithstanding its relatively small population, Marion sees its size nearly doubled every day due to incoming commuters. With an upcoming jet service connecting the city to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, they articulate on the fresh wave of opportunities this development would bring. The dialogue then traverses to the extensive tourism potential of Marion, its resilient history symbolically termed "Little Eygpt," and the enduring relevance of attractions like the Shawnee National Forest and a developed wine trail. Hot Type - The Unexpected Goodbye

They say you don't get to choose your family, but you can choose your friends. And sometimes, out of the blue, unexpectedly, you find yourself needing to say goodbye. And it hurts. Deeply. Dog people get it. Not-dog people don't. But for my money, there is no truer, no more caring, more loving friend than your dog. We had to say goodbye to Walter this week. And I wanted to share everything that meant to me, with you.
