Buying Businesses for £1 and Turning Them into Six-Figure Deals

Buying Businesses for £1 and Turning Them into Six-Figure Deals

In this episode of the Label Free Podcast, host Deanna Radulescu interviews Adrian Knight, an adventurer, acquisition entrepreneur, and business turnaround expert from the UK. Adrian shares his journey of buying and selling businesses, starting with his first company that he bought for £1 and sold for six figures within 24 months. He discusses his transition from being a startup entrepreneur to focusing on acquisitions and turnarounds, highlighting the different skill sets required for each. Adrian emphasizes the importance of understanding the problems and challenges of a business before making an acquisition. He also talks about his passion for personal development and physical fitness, which he believes contributes to his success as an entrepreneur. Adrian shares his experiences participating in endurance events and how they positively impact his mindset and overall well-being. He provides valuable advice for business owners, encouraging them to prioritize themselves and create space for personal growth. Listeners can connect with Adrian on Instagram (@AdrianJknight) to learn more about his journey and ventures. Here are 3 takeaways:

    1. Prioritize personal development and self-care: Adrian emphasizes the importance of prioritizing personal growth and well-being. By investing time in oneself, such as through reading, meditation, and exercise, individuals can become a better version of themselves and bring that positive energy into their businesses.
    2. Approach business acquisitions with caution: When buying a business, it is crucial to thoroughly assess the problems and challenges it may have. Many businesses are sold because of existing issues, and it is essential to understand the reasons behind the sale and the potential obstacles that may arise. Due diligence is necessary to make informed decisions.
    3. Build relationships with business owners: Adrian highlights the significance of building relationships with the owners of the businesses being acquired. Understanding their motivations, challenges, and experiences can provide valuable insights and knowledge. Maintaining these relationships even after the acquisition can be beneficial for ongoing support and guidance.

Start With Why | Patrick Colletti, Refounder of Net Health

Start With Why | Patrick Colletti, Refounder of Net Health

In the beginning of his career at Net Health, Patrick Colletti was faced with an unexpected opportunity and a steep hill to climb. It was the early 2000s and the company was teetering on the edge of collapse when board members asked him and another colleague if they wanted one last shot at turning it around. With a lack of job prospects in the wake of 9/11, Patrick felt that he had nothing to lose in giving it a try. The first few years were rough, but their newly organized team eventually got the business on solid ground. Today, Net Health is a leading electronic employee health records, software, and analytics company with an impressive roster of customers which includes over 95% of the country’s largest health care systems.

A few years ago, Patrick stepped down from his position as Net Health’s president, and this transition has placed him in a new role as the company’s advisor and refounder. In 2021, he published his book, which tells the story of his journey and the company’s reinvention and explosive growth over the last twenty years. The book is aptly titled – "Refounder: how transformational leaders take what’s broken and make it better." In our conversation, Patrick discusses the “refounding principles” that served him well in the early days of the turnaround. He also shares the importance of cultivating team and creating culture in building an organization that can stand the test of time.

    Truth and Trust

    Truth and Trust

In this episode, we explore Truth and Trust.  Their relationship to each other and their role as a precondition to positive change.

    - Truth is Subjective.  This is the very essence of confirmation bias.

    - Leading change requires building trust. Gaining trust requires you to acknowledgement the other person's subjective truth, not to focus on your subjective truth.  That's called empathy.

    - Beware of the Trust Bank concept.  Are you in Overdraft?

    - The pain that comes from failure, is overcome by responsibility and accountability to a greater aim
    - The aim doesn't matter. Aim at anything and possibilities will arise
    - enforcing employee accountability is not leadership. it might be tyranny
    - leadership is providing employees a purpose and encouraging self-accountability to that purpose

Understanding the Habit Loop for Personal and Business Change

Understanding the Habit Loop for Personal and Business Change

Note: I recognize these whiteboard Quickshots probably suck on the podcast. Check out Youtube on Martinis With Scott to get the full visual.

Episode 92 is a Quickshot on the Habit Loop and how to use it in business to change culture and behaviors.

The Habit Loop is: a Cue, leads to a Routine, leads to a Reward, leads back to the Cue.

To break a habit, you need to remove the Cue. Or, change the Routine to arrive at an equal Reward.

In business, it's the same, except you can't often remove the Cue. Focus on the Response you want and the Reward for EMPLOYEES when they deliver that Response.
