#280 - Mindful Parenting: Bringing Presence to Work and Family Life

Have you ever heard someone talk about being more mindful? Or becoming a more mindful parent? I remember hearing that term and thinking it meant to make sure I knew what my kids were doing, as in “Be more mindful of where your kids are.”

The truth is that the concept of mindful parenting is so much more. It's about being fully present in each moment, paying attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment.

It’s about managing your emotions so that you’re bringing your best self to work and at home. It's not about doing more or being perfect; it's about doing things with intention and being present in the midst of the chaos.

This week on The CPA MOMS Podcast we discuss the concept of mindfulness, integrating mindfulness into your daily routine, and creating a mindful environment.

#279 - Creative Ways to Stay Connected with Your Kids During Busy Times

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters — the connection we share with our kids. Amidst the chaos of schedules and to-do lists, the laughter, the small talks, and the shared moments can sometimes take a backseat.

But here's a gentle reminder: these connections are the glue that holds everything together.

Why is it so crucial? Because these connections are often the stories your kids will carry with them throughout their lives. It's the bedtime stories, the shared jokes, and the little everyday triumphs that create a bond stronger than any busy schedule.

This week on The CPA MOMS Podcast we discuss maximizing quality time, work-life integration, and mindful parenting and personal well-being.

My end of year preparations start now

My end of year preparations start now

'Busy season' is different for a lot of people, for me, it's hay and harvest. For others, it can be lambing, mustering, or even the holiday season with friends and family. Success during the busy season isn't about perfection or business growth, it's about ticking boxes and getting things done. With the busy season fast approaching, listen in to some of the strategies and mindset shifts I make as we look towards the end of the year.

#235 - How To Stop Being So Busy, Even During Busy Season

#235 - How To Stop Being So Busy, Even During Busy Season

If you stopped and asked any accountant how they’re doing, the typical answer would be something like, “It’s crazy busy right now,” “I’m just so busy,” or “You know it’s busy season, right?” I’m going to bet you probably say something along those lines when someone asks how you’re doing as if throwing the word busy into your reply tells them everything they need to know.

To be honest, It’s not our fault that we constantly describe ourselves as busy because the fact is we operate under tight deadlines with many deliverables at work. We have a lot we are responsible for producing in any given week, but especially during certain times of the year, like tax season.

This week on The CPA MOMS Podcast we discuss why we wear busy as a badge of honor and what to do when you’re stuck feeling busy.

#227 - What Your Calendar Tells Me

#227 - What Your Calendar Tells Me

Time is one of our most precious assets as a busy accountant and mom. As you are well aware, we have 24 hours in a day that are typically divided among working, taking care of our family, and trying to squeeze in some sleep.

How many of you could benefit from looking at the impact of your choices when it comes to how you spend your time? How many of you feel like there’s never enough time, that time is in short supply, and that there’s nothing you can do about it?

Whether you realize it or not, your calendar tells me a lot - some of it good, and some of it not so good.  That’s why it’s important to understand not only what your calendar says about you but also what you can do to have much more control over your time.

This week on The CPA MOMS Podcast we discuss what your calendar tells me and how to use your calendar to better manage your time and your life

How to make busy season fun (yes, fun)

How to make busy season fun (yes, fun)

If the words “busy season” start your stomach churning, Rabecca Eunis, CPA, knows how you feel.

Starting her accounting career with her father’s firm, Eunis soon learned to hate the three-month grind to tax day. Her disdain grew so strong that it motivated her to launch her own firm — not to escape tax season but to find ways to make the experience less stressful and more fun.

Why a busy-season debrief has value, and why it’s not just for tax teams

Why a busy-season debrief has value, and why it’s not just for tax teams

How soon is too soon to have a debrief after busy season? And what should be the goal of such a debrief? Those topics are addressed in a special crossover episode with the AICPA Town Hall series. Hear three CPAs discuss the topic, how it’s applicable to more than tax season, and how firm leaders of different sizes approach the debrief. The full Town Hall episode is here, and the speakers in this segment are:

    • Lisa Simpson, CPA, CGMA, vice president–Firm Services at the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants;
    • Brandon Lagarde, CPA, director of the Tax Services Group at Postlethwaite & Netterville; and
    • Brent Forbush, CPA, CGMA, managing partner of Forbush & Associates.

The conversation is a follow-up to an article Lagarde and Forbush co-authored in early 2020 in The Tax Adviser.

Also, learn about the IRS response to a TIGTA report that noted the IRS destroyed millions of unprocessed information returns.

Study the Storm of Your Busy Season

Most businesses have crazy busy seasons. Time’s when you spend what feels like 100% of your time “in” the business, “doing” the business vs working “on” the business.

The key is to ensure that you are studying what is going right and what is going wrong and what you need to fix before the next crazy season of your business.

So in the middle of your storm, make sure you are jotting down the things you need to tweak or improve before the next storm moves in.

    #121 - How To Have A Stress-Free Busy Season

    #121 - How To Have A Stress-Free Busy Season

It doesn’t matter whether you are in public or private accounting, we all have busy seasons throughout the course of the year. In private accounting you probably struggle with quarterly deadlines and in public accounting you’re most likely faced with busy times like tax season; times where there is more work to get done than at other times during the year.

Now obviously stress is not unique to the accounting profession, but when you add the demands of an accounting career to the demands of being a mom, it can pretty much guarantee that you’ll experience stress trying to balance it all. Before you know it, you’re overwhelmed, frustrated and confused about how to handle everything you have to do.

Unfortunately, as a profession, accountants have normalized stress in our lives because everyone around us seems to be stressed as well. We find it hard to believe that things can be different since it seems like it’s just a normal part of the work culture; as if stress is a given, or possibly even a badge of honor.

This week on The CPA MOMS Podcast I discuss where stress comes from and my 3 secrets for having a stress-free busy season.
