    Humanity Chats - Liberty Canzater

    Humanity Chats - Liberty Canzater

Liberty Canzater is a woman who is making an impact in her community through her work as president and founder of The Butterfly Foundation (TBF) and Monarch Café. Liberty's mission with TBF is to empower and transform the lives of economically challenged individuals and families, helping them become self-sufficient and confident citizens.

TBF has been providing supportive services to chronically homeless individuals and families with disabilities in Spartanburg, Greenville, and Anderson Counties. They launched a Culinary Job Training Program to equip unemployed, underemployed, homeless, and previously incarcerated adults for a career in the food service industry. Their work has had resounding success, with individuals completing this 15-week program and maintaining an 88% job placement rate among participants.

In January 2023, Liberty's innovative venture, the Monarch Café, evolved as the only commissary kitchen with a pop-up restaurant component in the Upstate. This concept allows food producers, caterers, and food truck owners to rent a commercial kitchen space on a flexible, hourly or daily basis to prepare and sell food. It also provides food entrepreneurs with the opportunity to offer a full-service restaurant atmosphere to their customers without the overhead of maintaining a commercial facility.

Throughout our conversation, Liberty emphasized how crucial it is to do what you love, be open to advice, and think broadly to continually evolve. Her story serves as a testament to her commitment and resilience, and it is indeed a source of inspiration for  budding entrepreneurs.

Ashlee's warning: social media and the pressure for perfect

When Ashlee Thomas was 13, she went on a health kick using social media. Just a year later, she was diagnosed with anorexia. She was hospitalised for 12 weeks and her heart stopped – twice. A startling new Australian study has shown Ashlee isn’t the only one experiencing mental health problems because of social media. On this episode of Under The Gloss, Ashlee joins Phoebe, and Body and Soul’s Alison Izzo, to share her story.

TRIGGER WARNING: this episode may be distressing to some listeners. We will be discussing disordered eating, anorexia and suicidal ideation, so please listen with care. If this episode raises any issues or concerns, you can reach out to the Butterfly Foundation.

Social media investigator Suku Sukunesan, Let's Talk in Depth

Social media investigator Suku Sukunesan, Let's Talk in Depth
Social media is a huge driver of body image issues and young people are particularly at risk. Packed with unrealistic images and ideals, social platforms can be an incubator for mental illness – including eating disorders. But the problem is worse than most people think according to Swinburne University researcher in applied social technology Dr Suku Sukunesan.

Dr Sukunesan's research has been making waves in the Australian media lately as more people begin to pay attention to his disturbing findings of the destructive impact social media can have. He told host Sam Ikin that young people vulnerable to eating disorders were particularly at risk on social platforms where a dark, hidden network operates right beneath our noses.

For some helpful tips on how to help young people use social media safely, Butterfly has a helpful guide for parents Parents https://butterfly.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Instagram-Parents-Guide.pdf

Paralympian Jessica Smith, Let's Talk in-Depth

Paralympian Jessica Smith, Let's Talk in-Depth
Mental health was one of the major underlying issues laid bare at the Tokyo Paralympics. While we all heard about high profile athletes and their struggles from a distance, Australian Swimmer Jessica Smith has lived through it. As a kid living with a disability, Jessica wanted to win gold for her country since she realised she could beat all the able-bodied swimmers at her school. It became more than a dream. Swimming was her life's work and her identity. In 2004 Jessica's went to the Athens Games as a favourite, only to have her Olympic Dreams shattered when her health, both mental and physical, failed her. She was suffering from anxiety, depression and a severe eating disorder that was affecting her physical health and her performance in the pool. Eventually, she realised that she couldn't control these co-occurring disorders and continue in her high-performance sporting career. She had to choose between her health and Olympic glory.

Jessica opens up about her struggles in this episode of Butterfly's Let's Talk In-Depth with host Sam Ikin.

Carolyn Costin, Let's Talk in Depth

Carolyn Costin, Let's Talk in Depth
Nobody has had a more profound impact on the treatment of eating disorders than Carolyn Costin. We are excited to have her as the first guest for our Let’s Talk in Depth show, which will run mid-monthly to complement Butterfly: Let’s Talk.

After recovering from Anorexia Nervosa in her early 20’s, Carolyn found her calling in helping others to recover. Her unique philosophy was so successful that she took it to the public through a series of books and public events and eventually opened the world’s first licensed, residential eating disorder facility in California, Monte Nido.

Carolyn has also played a pivotal role in the creation of Australia’s first fully residential eating disorder recovery facility, Wandi Nerida on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

In this candid discussion, Carolyn opens up about her intuitive ability to diagnose and treat her own eating disorder and how that led to a decades-long career helping others to find recovery.
