441 | Maria, fraternal twins, ovulation induction, cervical stitch, bed rest, IUGR, caesarean birth, NICU

In today’s episode Maria shares her fraternal twin pregnancy which required her to spend 14 weeks on bedrest. Her pregnancy was considered normal until 20 weeks when a routine scan showed her cervix was shortening, exacerbated by the pressure of excess amniotic fluid. The following day a cervix stitch was inserted and Maria spent the next 10 weeks in hospital. She talks about the power of meditation and the practises she embraced to stay present and positive. Her boys were born at 33 weeks and are now healthy, happy four-year-olds who speak three languages.

One Mama Midwife | Lauren's Tips on Embracing Dreams and Empowering Women

One Mama Midwife | Lauren's Tips on Embracing Dreams and Empowering Women

This episode is SO INSPIRING, you will just LOVE Lauren and her high vibe energy. We were delighted to chat to Lauren from One Mama Midwife about all the parts of her life right now, where she draws inspiration from and what keeps her going.

Lauren shares with us how she became a Mother at the young age of 18 and how her experience inspired her to change the course of her life to support women going through the same thing. Lauren now has 4 children, a successful business in Midwifery (One Mama Midwife) and helps women daily on their journey into Motherhood. She has such a positive and determined attitude to reach for her dreams and go for it! Lauren runs Antenatal classes as well as Caesarean specific Antenatal classes in her new studio, Sol Studio which she just opened as a part of her offering as a Midwife.

Some of Lauren’s stand out tips to balance her professional and personal life are:

    • Don’t overthink things, just do it! If it feels good, follow the lead and take action.
    • Trust your intuition and act on it.
    • Ask for help from family and friends and accept it.
    • Let yourself grow and improve, learn as you go. Mistakes are part of success as long as you take the insight and move forward.
    • Sit in gratitude when you’re having a rough day. Come back to what centres you.
    • Don’t take no for an answer, keep going, keep learning!

Lauren opens up about the mental load of the rough times in midwifery and how she copes. Her ability to look at the beauty in all situations and find light is truly inspirational.

We chat all things Maternal Assisted Caesareans and how Lauren has paved the way in NSW for women to have this as an option for birth. She single handedly created a new policy at her hospital to be able to birth her own baby through Maternal Assisted Caesarean. This metod is not only empowering but enables the oxytocin release and connection that Mum’s who have previously had Caesareans haven’t had the opportunity to experience.

    Episode 90 - Emma's Story - C-Section and VBAC

    Episode 90 - Emma's Story - C-Section and VBAC

In the very last episode of season 3, I am chatting with one of my very special birth clients Emma,  who had two very different experiences with each of her children.

Emma shares how she felt as a Muslim woman, having an unplanned c-section with her first baby, and then how she was clear that she wanted a  natural birth next time around.

Despite being given a diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes, she strongly believes she didn't have it due to leading such a healthy lifestyle. Emma did a lot of research to fully understand GDM and was confident that the slightly high readings she got that tipped her over the threshold were more likely to be due to lack of sleep and stress.  Even so, the label stuck and it affected the way she was treated in labour.

This episode highlights some serious issues within the maternity system, and offers so much information and support for others who are pregnant and planning to give birth in a hospital setting.

The Dance of Joy + Heartbreak with Kirsten Zinchuk Haley

The Dance of Joy + Heartbreak with Kirsten Zinchuk Haley

#007: This week's guest is Kirsten Zinchuk Haley, who lives near Princeton, NJ and is a mom of three children, two daughters (13 and 11) and one son (7). In this episode, Kirsten talks through all three of her birth stories, one cesarean after her breech baby was undetected by her doctor, a successful VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean), and finally, a wildly free unmedicated birth using the hypnobirthing technique. Kirsten shares her perspective about the heartbreaking joy of motherhood, the particular love of a son for his mother, what she loves about spending time with her children, and how she cultivates presence in both motherhood and business. Kirsten talks about her work in the healing/arts, why she included a salt cave to be part of her business, and how the spiritual nature of her work inspires her mothering toward curiosity, laughter, and pleasure. She also explains how storytelling can be used to empower and heal by sharing her journey from studying Anthropology, to Brand Marketing, to Women’s Circles and a variety of other healing modalities. Finally, Kirsten confesses to fully indulging in the pleasure (and peace) of spending a week away from her family.

Kirsten Zinchuk Haley is the owner and founder of sault + spirit. She seeks to provide a space for expansion and healing for all. Believing everything we need to live our most joyful, purposeful lives resides in the stories we tell, the profound wisdom of our bodies and learning to hold this whole dance of life with a looser grip and a more joyful heart. In a world and a body that are constantly evolving and becoming, nothing is beyond our power to transform and transmute.

Kirsten has a graduate degree in Ethnography and Anthropology from the University of Chicago and studied Creative Writing and Philosophy at Emory University. She has been investigating and crafting stories for brands, groups, and individuals for over 20 years, transforming what is possible for all. Her lifetime love of the mystical tradition of tarot and extensive graduate work in media theory has informed her work on visual narrative as a powerful tool for trauma resolution and healing. She is a reiki master, attuned to reading the akasha, a master of eriksonian hypnosis and has been studying the art of embodiment and open-hearted intimacy for the past few years. Currently, she is studying more somatic modalities with a keen interest in the stories the body is telling through our movements, habits, and gestures. The stories we tell… linguistically, socially, psychologically, culturally, visually, physically, relationally …that is the heart of it all.
