Mitch Cahn - Unionwear - Making Baseball Hat History in U.S. with Union Labor

Mitch Cahn - Unionwear - Making Baseball Hat History in U.S. with Union Labor

Who says that the only way for a manufacturer to make money is to send production outside of the USA? Not Mitch Cahn. After graduating from Wharton and working on Wall Street, Mitch decided he wanted to create something. So, in the early 1990’s he bought the distressed assets of a hat manufacturer in Jersey City, NJ, and very purposely brought back the unionized workers that had been employed there. Twenty-eight years later, Mitch’s company, Unionwear, is the only manufacturer of American made baseball hats produced by unionized employees. In fact, he is the go-to source for every presidential campaign and anyone who wants the world to know that they care about where their merchandise is made and who makes it.

140: 7 Ways to Do It Afraid!

140: 7 Ways to Do It Afraid!

    It's time.

It's 2017, and it's time for you to stop letting fear stop you from doing that thing that you've been thinking about since the start of this month, since the middle of last year, since forever. No more excuses. Time to face down your fear and your ego. Your ego is trying to keep you safe, but it's also causing you to make up stories about how things may go wrong or how you may be embarrassed or that you may get rejected and how you may fail -- stories that, if you think about it, are all make believe. You have no idea what's going to happen.

While you're busy being stuck in fear, the opportunities that await you are moving on without you, as are the people and resources that would show up if you just take that leap.

In this episode, I talk about my own leap into doing something I've been afraid of within my business and give you 7 tools you can use to help you make that move in your own business and life.

    It's time.

138: Wanona Satcher: Designing Urban Communities for Social Good and Having a Seat at Your Own Table

138: Wanona Satcher: Designing Urban Communities for Social Good and Having a Seat at Your Own Table

Wanona Satcher describes herself as a child who was thoughtful, "geeky," and one who never followed status quo. The Atlanta native thought dolls were ridiculous, eschewing them and using them as speed bumps within the neighborhoods she built while playing on her family's living room floor for hours -- fascinated by how things are built and designed. Today as founder of Rejuve, a charitable 501c organization focused on design and social good, Wanona advocates for designing meaningful spaces for communities, women, families, children and small businesses in innovative ways -- and is still committed to rejecting the status quo.

On this episode, Wanona discusses the power of architecture and design and its influence on our surroundings, the importance of designing spaces for "purposeful serendipity,"  how to build prosilient communities and how she's reaching out for funding support!

    On this episode you'll learn:

How to create equity of spaces. Why she believes there are really are no new ideas. The difference between prosilient and resilient communities. The benefits and the bureaucracy of working with local government. How to know when it's time to walk away, and why it's important not to burn bridges. Why it's important for women to have side hustles. Why you MUST get rest and the power of meditation. How to "lean in" in your own way.Her top tips for fundraising. There's nothing sexier than saying "I don't know," and asking questions. How to recognize the right opportunities, and how to know when to say "no."Subscribe to Support is Sexy podcast on iTunes or on Stitcher Radio!

100: "Tell Me What You Need." Why You MUST Be Ready to Answer This Request

100: "Tell Me What You Need." Why You MUST Be Ready to Answer This Request

    "Tell me what you need."

I have said it before and I will say it again, these are five of the sexiest words in the English language. There are many, but these rank high on my list. The person making this request of you, to tell them what you need, is creating space for you to fill it with your desire, your needs in the moment, the things that you think will help you to move forward.

So, if someone were to make this request of you, as it relates to your business, would you be able to fill that space? Would you have answers? Would you be able to list AT LEAST three things that would move you forward in that moment?

This is what I faced this past week during two interviews with two powerful and incredibly important women entrepreneurs: Karen Cah, CEO of ifundwomen.com, and Dr. Karen Thomas, CEO of the Marion P. Thomas Charter School in Newark, New Jersey. And in this episode (episode 100!), I talk about what happened when I was asked what I needed, and how it has shifted my thinking around just how unready I am to receive support. But that changes -- for you and for me -- starting today. It's time to GET ready to tell the world what you need.

98: Get Money: Top Tips for Crowdfunding Your Business with ifundwomen Founder Karen Cahn

98: Get Money: Top Tips for Crowdfunding Your Business with ifundwomen Founder Karen Cahn

Karen Cahn, a native of Canton, Massachusetts, has always believed in women building their own thing, living on their own terms and having their own money no matter what -- even when working for another company. Karen, who has worked ever since she was 13, took a job very early in her career at Google and spent 10 years at the Internet giant, working with YouTube, leading strategy in video and becoming an intrapreneur by launching a business within the business -- the Branded Entertainment Group -- which let her know that, yep, she could be a badass entrepreneur.

Today, Karen has launched two businesses, is financially secure and is clearer than ever that money buys freedom, and now she is creating spaces (and businesses) where other women can realize that freedom as well. Through her latest venture, ifundwomen.com, which is the first crowdfunding platform exclusively for women, Karen offers women entrepreneurs and creatives a way to not only get their businesses financed, but to get vital support -- directly from Karen and her team -- in other important ways that will help them move forward, such as video production and accountability.

On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Karen talks to us about why women still lag significantly behind when it comes to funding (despite the fact that we are launching more businesses than ever), how to get of our own way, and her unwavering mission to support the female economy.

    On this episode, you'll learn...

Myths about crowdfunding.5 questions you need to ask yourself for your project. Why crowdfunding is a great way to test your project and see if there's a business there. Why it's all about FFFs.What the confidence gap for women is and how Karen is working to close it.Why men don't have the confidence gap.How to know when someone is NOT going to invest in your business or project. Why we need to stop apologizing and people pleasing.Being aware of how you process feedback. How you do yourself a disservice if you don't share your idea with other people out of fear of stealing it.How the recent US election has refueled her passion.
