We open with the case of Constable Michael Brisco of the Windsor Police Service. With the help of the Justice Centre, he is appealing his conviction for Discreditable Conduct resulting from his donation to the Freedom Convoy. There follows a discussion about free speech and the elites, and a review of the Canada Day fireworks controversies in cities across the country. We finish by parsing a recent column and court case that suggest the era of the courts reading new rights into the Charter is over.

#027 - "Nun cho ga" - "Big Animal Baby" Mammoth Discovered in Klondike Gold Fields

#027 - "Nun cho ga" - "Big Animal Baby" Mammoth Discovered in Klondike Gold Fields

June 21st remains a significant day for a great many people in Canada as the long daylight of the Summer Solstice transits into its next seasonal phase.  A sense of time, mortality, humility and gratitude, often accompanies this pivotal day, especially for the  people living in Canada's North.

June 21st also marks National Indigenous Peoples Day since 1996.  It's a special occasion and opportunity to learn more about the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences and histories of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples as they celebrate their heritage.

On this celebrated day of June 21st, 2022, the Tr'ondek Hwech's First Nation received a gift from their ancestral lands with the unearthing of a baby woolly mammoth at a remote Klondike Placer mine site under the astute eye of an excavator operator.  The operator, Travis" couldn't believe what he had unearthed, and to this day is overwhelmed with emotion when speaking about it.

During the next several hours, Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin First Nations Elders, a plethora of scientists, and the entire mine site crew and owners stood by in awe and wonderment. The sky's literally opened up with rain, wind, lighting and thunder as Nun cho ga came back into the world with all the energy of the natural world by her side.

Nun cho ga, "big animal baby",  in the traditional Han language, made her entry back into the world after being mummified in an icy layer of Steppe sediment estimated to be 35000 years old. She's been nearly perfectly mummified in the frozen Klondike Gold Fields and has retained her soft tissue, hair, toenails and internal organs, offering evidence of the ancient flora that sustained her during her brief life.

For now, Nun cho ga will remain where she is, on the traditional territory of the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin, as scientists and the First Nations people continue to work cooperatively, balancing the cultural significance of her place in the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin community, and the scientific community.

THE CANADIAN SCREEN ACTORS AWARDS: Sort of, Winner: Best Comedy Series

THE CANADIAN SCREEN ACTORS AWARDS: Sort of, Winner: Best Comedy Series

What makes you proud to be Canadian or American? How do you feel a part of society? As we celebrate Canada and Independence Day, we recognize our unique culture and diversity through the Canadian television sitcom, Sort of, released in Canada on CBC Television & CBC Gem in 2021, and HBO Max in the US. Created by Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo, the series stars Baig as Sabi Mehboob, a non-binary millennial trying to balance his roles as a child of Pakistani immigrant parents and Muslim upbringing, a bartender at an LGBTQ bookstore and café, and a caregiver to the young children of a professional couple. The show has been widely received and nominated for several awards, becoming the most-nominated television series at this year’s 10th annual Canadian Screen Awards (Canada’s equivalent to the Oscars). With 13 nominations, it won for Best Comedy Series. It was also shortlisted for the fan-voted Audience Choice Award. In February 2022, the series was renewed for a second season. As accredited media at the CSA’s virtual red carpet, in this Janette’s TV & Janette’s TV Podcast episode, Janette sits down with Bilal Baig (Co-Creator & Writer, plays “Sabi Mehboob”), Fab Filippo (Co-Creator & Director), Amanda Cordner (plays “7ven”), and Jennifer Kawaja (Producer, Sienna Films) to talk about the show is impacting the LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ community around the world.

Blake Murphy is joined by Blue Jays radio play-by-play voice Ben Wagner to chat about how Yusei Kikuchi's start against the Rays dictates the rest of the weekend series, if Jose Berrios can bounce back in his next outing, and how Toronto can take advantage of Tampa Bay's struggling bullpen (03:18). FanGraphs' Ben Clemens looks at the Rays' big bats heading to the IL, Tampa's roster depth both on the field and in their pitching staff, and what he makes of the Jays' pitching rotation (3:34). Blake then previews the 5-game series and focuses in on some of the starting pitchers Toronto will be facing (51:38). Finally, former Jays pitcher and MLB Network Radio's Ricky Romero stops by to discuss the response from the bench after Alejandro Kirk got hit by Boston Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta, his relationship with Sergio Romo and what he brings to the Jays' staff, his experience starting on Canada Day, and what he expects from Berrios' holiday start (01:13:26).

Has the meaning behind the Canadian flag changed?

Has the meaning behind the Canadian flag changed?

As we approach Canada Day — and the prospect of the return of "freedom" protests in Ottawa   — let's consider the meaning and symbolism of the Canadian flag.

After weeks of the so-called "freedom convoy" last winter, many of us took a hard look at the symbolism of the Canadian flag and its recent association with white supremacy. Some felt a new fear or anger at what they feel the flag represents.

But other communities have always felt this way about the Canadian flag.

After unmarked graves were found at the sites of former residential schools, the Canadian flag was flown at half-mast in many places to show shame for our collective history and solidarity with Indigenous communities. And last year on Canada Day, many people called for people to wear orange instead of red and white.

Both of our guests on this episode of Don't Call Me Resilient have studied multiculturalism, citizenship and belonging. Daniel McNeil looks at history and culture and the complexities of global Black communities. He is a professor and national scholar chair in Black studies at Queen's University. Lucy El-Sherif is a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto in ethnic and pluralism studies.

Death Metal Fan" is voiced by Kristi Stewart. This is her third performance for  Read Me A Nightmare.

With a love of theatre and performing, she first stepped on stage at the tender age of 14, in the role of Little Mary in the longest running melodrama production “The Drunkard” -in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Journal Entry #3 We are still here

Journal Entry #3 We are still here

In this episode I share some hard truths.
I start off with a Native American Peace Prayer.

As I was getting ready to edit an episode for todays postcast I found I kept running into issues with the episodes I was trying to edit so I decided to work on this journal entry I had recorded a few weeks ago but never ended up uploading. And just as I finished editing it I saw on my news feed... 160 unmarked graves on Penelakut Island near the Kuper Island Residential School.

I am taking this as a sign that what I had to say in this episode was meant to be heard.

We are still here, as Indigenous People we are thriving, we have survived. Even if you are like me and haven't grown up with the Culture but you know now and you can and are learning you matter. Your voice, your feelings matter.

In this episode I touch on my love for therapy, family secrets and realizations, acknowledging some hard truths, my white privilege, Canada day & wearing orange and much more.
