Bonus – Shout Music: Conversation with Lovett Hines

Bonus – Shout Music: Conversation with Lovett Hines

One of Daddy Grace’s lasting legacies is shout music: specifically, the horn-driven shout bands, whose presence – even today – is a constant at almost all United House of Prayer functions. In this week’s bonus episode, Marcy sits down with Lovett Hines, Artistic Director of the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts (and former House of Prayer band member), to discuss his own musical upbringing in the church, as well as how he sees the tradition of shout music in the world today.

I Came From the Land Beyond the Sea

I Came From the Land Beyond the Sea

As a child, Marcy was never allowed to attend a United House of Prayer service — her family told her it was taboo. But the church — which Daddy Grace founded in 1919 — is still going strong. So what’s going on?  Why did Daddy Grace want to start his own church in the first place? How did he manage to grow it so quickly? And what are the services actually like? Marcy travels down to Charlotte, NC to find out for herself.

    I Am a Colorless Bishop

    I Am a Colorless Bishop

Both Daddy Grace’s family and Marcy’s family came to America from the same Cape Verdean island. And they landed in a place where many Cape Verdeans did – New Bedford, Massachusetts. But why did they immigrate? What pushed them toward America? And once then arrived, did they find the American Dream that they were looking for? And does that have anything to do with why Daddy Grace, as a Black man, called himself “colorless”?

Sweet Daddy Grace: The Gospel According to Daddy

Sweet Daddy Grace: The Gospel According to Daddy

Since she was a little girl, Marcy DePina felt drawn to a man called Daddy Grace, a charismatic immigrant from Cabo Verde, West Africa, who – during the violent Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras – traveled around the United States preaching, healing, and building his megachurch.

But who was Daddy Grace? For all his accomplishments, he seems to raise more questions than answers. Like why isn’t he more known and celebrated in the Cape Verdean community? And when Marcy brings him up to her family, why do some people refuse to talk about him? And most importantly: Marcy wants to know, are she and Daddy Grace actually related?

Breaking Bad: Understanding Backlash Against Democracy in Africa — Lise Rakner

Breaking Bad: Understanding Backlash Against Democracy in Africa — Lise Rakner

There is a great deal of attention these days on the backlash against democracy around the world. In a forthcoming book, Democratic Backsliding in Africa? Autocratization, Resilience, and Contention, my guest Lise Rakner and her two co-authors (Leonardo R. Arriola and Nicolas van de Walle) conclude that the African continent’s democratic experience over the past two decades largely reflects status quo politics. Thus, there is neither substantial progress nor regression in the advancement of civil and political freedoms since the initial transitions to democracy in the early 1990s.

Lise Rakner is a professor of political science at the University of Bergen. She studies democratization and autocratization, focusing particularly on human rights, electoral politics, and political parties. Twitter: @li63ra

Crossover - Africa in my kitchen - Cape Verde - Cachupa

Hi its your host Yemi, the Overlooked podcast is still on a break from season 1.  I am taking some time to rest, relax and recharge for 2021.

As you may already know, the Overlooked podcast is produced by Tunuka Media. The same production studio at produces the well-loved podcast Africa in my kitchen.  Seeing as the holiday season is about to go into full swing, I thought it would be great to just highlight Africa in my kitchen while we wait for the Overlooked podcast to come back on early in 2021.

To get you started, I have selected one of my favorite episodes with one of the meals I have love, love, loved. It was on Cachupa from Cape Verde.
