Episode 118: Tar & 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould

Episode 118: Tar & 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould

Everything Everywhere All at Once won Best Picture in part because it was a rebuke of Oscar-bait pretension with its non-western story, diverse cast, and fun unpretentious style - whereas in the leadup to the awards, many avoided the frontrunner, Todd Fields' Tar, because it appeared to be old-school Oscar: a ponderous, self-serious reinforcement of the Great Art. But tonight, along with the gentle indie Thirty-Two Short Films about Glenn Gould, MG argues that classical doesn't necessarily mean pretentious.

    BONUS EPISODE - Tar

This week, we watch another Best Picture nominee from the past year. This film showcases Cate Blanchett’s immense talent in the role of a world famous conductor based in Germany. Faithspotting "Tar"

    Faithspotting "Tar"

Kenny and Mike discuss the and spot faith reflected in the Todd Field film Tar starring Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett. Tar received an five Oscar Nominations for Best Picture, Actress, Director, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, and Editing.

Lydia Tar is the first Music Director of the Berlin Philharmonic and a force in the Classical music universe whose ego and appetite for power and control over others threatens to unravel all she has worked to acheive.

    Faith Spotted:

Pride is antithetical to Christian teaching that as all people are children of God, one's life and the lives of others belong to God and therefore worthy of love, care, and respect. Matthew 22:34-37, Mark 12:28-34, Leviticus 19:9-18

As talent is a gift from God, it should be used to God's glory rather than to glorify and elevate oneself. All the work and training that develop talent are a part of one's responsibility to use the gift to the fullest potential.

Power is the oxygen that feeds the flame of pride to destructive beliefs and practices.  Scripture referencing pride:  Proverbs 8:13, 16:18, Romans 12:16, ! Corinthians 13:4, Galatians 6:3, James 4:6-7.

In contrast, the Fruits of the Spirit reflect and and draw one closer to God and deepen one's faith. Galatians 5:22-23

    Faithspotting "Nightmare Alley"

Mike and Kenny discuss Nightmare Alley and spot faith elements reflected in the Academy Award Best Picture nominee directed by Guillermo del Toro.

    Faith Reflected:

Confusing you is the nature of my game" Jaggar & Richards.

The nature of sin Satan, and or evil is to puzzle and confuse one(s) into rationalizing to act counter to righteousness, law, and even one's best interest. Such confusion exploits dissatisfaction in life and living with the peace of God.

The David and Joseph narratives as examples of dissatisfaction and living outside of God's peace confusing one's into exploiting others.

The importance of Spiritual disciplines to build peace, satisfaction and contentment in life.  Romans 15,16, Philippians 4:7, 2Kings 14

    Fixing the Crystal Skull

    Fixing the Crystal Skull

    Movie Meltdown - Episode 525

This episode we try to see if it's possible to - fix the Crystal Skull. The fourth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise has frustrated fans since it's initial release. So we start with our on-going recasting question... could something as simple as recasting the role of Mutt Williams save this movie? But then we start to ask even bigger questions like... what if Indy and Marion had a daughter? And what if we remove the alien plot completely? Would fans have been happy? And what artifact would Indy be looking for? Listen as we try to figure out - just what it would take to fix the Crystal Skull!

And while we wish we were climbing around in a tomb, we also mention… Marvel Comics, a CG monkey, Karen Allen, Area 51, cracking open the plastic, The History Channel, The Chronicles of Narnia, David Childress, creating the story arc, Stranger Things, Shia LaBeouf, Hitler, grabbing a snake, memorable and interesting, Lara Croft, Harrison Ford, Taken, recasting, animated series, Solo, Sallah, archaeology, an extra level of research, George Lucas, passing the torch, socs vs. greasers, John Hurt, Forrest Gump, stunt casting, Horizon Zero Dawn, all kinds of Jesus, from a divided household, Cate Blanchett, quotable lines, Marcus, the Bond franchise, Michael Bay, campy things, Steven Spielberg, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, It, the object of desire, nuking the fridge, The Teen Choice Awards and Project MKUltra.

“There’s elements there that are true throughout the other three movies, so what is it about this one that almost across the board people are like… I hate that movie!”
