In this episode of Chef AF, I chat with Nadia Caterina Munno, known as The Pasta Queen about building her brand, the importance and influence of family, her passion for authenticity and the inspiration for her debut cookbook, The Pasta Queen: A Just Gorgeous Cookbook.

Munno was born and raised in Rome before moving to the United States. She comes from a generation of pasta makers. Her father's family is down south near Naples, and that's where the pasta factory business started in the 1800s. Munno’s family have been farmers since the 1700s and this instilled in her the love and passion she has for food.

Munno a mother of four, talks about creating The Pasta Queen, her brand from scratch, she said she had a premonition in 2015 while in London in a corporate environment. And I was dealing with contracts and sales quotas and all of that. She says, “I kind of made a New Year's resolution that I wanted to go back to what my passion is and what I love most is entertaining and cooking.” Munno adds, “I started off on YouTube by posting occasional videos of me cooking and showing my authentic family recipes.”

The Pasta Queen quickly grew her community on TikTok, Instagram and back to YouTube, by sticking to her mission of showing authentic Italian cuisine. She says, “I think it's because they're such simple and cost effective, comforting recipes that are very easy for people to make at home. And I think that the sharing of those recipes got me where I am, because people just keep sharing my recipes with their loved ones and friends and they’re simple recipes. So I think that that's the key here.”

Creating playful objects and curious scenes inspired by childhood memories and dreams, Caterina Weintraub uses glass, a fragile and heavy material, to recreate iconic toys or re-imagine personal memories that evoke a sense of sentiment, wonder and discomfort. She utilizes a variety of techniques to create sculptures and installations in her Boston-based studio, Fiamma Glass. From intricate torch work to large-scale kiln castings and hot blown pieces, she chooses the process best suited to realize her vision.

Fiamma Glass Studio was established in 2010 in Newton, Massachusetts, by native Bostonians, David and Caterina Weintraub. Both are graduates of Massachusetts College of Art & Design, where they met over 13 years ago. Fiamma Glass Studio offers flameworking and glassblowing instruction, design, fabrication and consultation. 

Caterina’s glass experience includes internships with Dan Dailey and Bel Vetro Glass, Brockton, Massachusetts. She has been awarded scholarships to the Corning Museum of Glass, Penland School of Crafts and Mass Art and was presented with Habatat Gallery’s International Award. Recent exhibitions include Not Your Grandma’s Glass, Habatat, Royal Oak, Michigan. In 2021, the gallery promoted a year-long glass competition featuring 12 artists, including Weintraub, who push their medium beyond the norm. Each artist chose a single month of the year to create an online presentation. Habatat asked the artists to create on such a level that the body of work could be displayed at their dream museum. 

Says Aaron Schey, international art dealer, owner and partner of Habatat Michigan, founder of the Glass Art Fair and Not Grandma’s Glass: “This exhibition promoted 12 unique online presentations by 12 artists that are pushing the medium beyond the norm – creating work that is probably not in grandma’s collection…..yet. These artists are extremely innovative, and I propose that they will all be important in the future of the glass medium.”

Glass Lifeforms, on view in 2021 at Fuller Craft Museum’s Stone and Barstow Galleries, Brockton, MA, featured Weintraub’s sculpture. Curated by Sally Prasch, Glass Lifeforms 2021 featured contemporary artworks inspired by Harvard University’s acclaimed collections of plant and invertebrate models produced in the 19^th and 20^th centuries by Czech glass artists Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka. The exhibition included artists working in various glass techniques, including lampworking, glassblowing, pâte de verre, and others. Exhibited works were selected by a jury based on accuracy in representing the organism, aesthetic beauty, presentation, and originality. 

Unforgettable, Weintraub’s signature polka dot bunnies, glass lab rats and humorous finger puppets linger in the viewer’s memory long after initial viewing, proving this artist has conquered the ultimate challenge of finding a style and voice in glass.

Benedetta Tagliabue, currently director of Miralles Tagliabue EMBT, international architecture firm founded in Barcelona in 1994, with office in Shanghai and in Paris, has received prestigious awards for her works as the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2005, the National Spanish Prize in 2006, City of Barcelona prize in 2005 and 2009, and the RIBA Jencks Award in 2013 as acknowledgment of her major contribution internationally to both the theory and practice of architecture. Extremely active in the academia, she has been a visiting professor at Harvard University, Columbia University and Barcelona ETSAB, lecturing regularly at architecture forums and universities, and part of jurors around the world, the Princesa de Asturias awards and since 2014 member of the jury of the Pritzker Prize.
Her professional beginning, the close collaboration with the husband and working partner, Enric Miralles, a kind of legendary figure, a man endowed with a particular charismatic and strong personality, will be the starting point of our conversation. A journey together that will represent a reciprocal growth, giving opportunity for many famous realizations, and will bring Benedetta, Italian, born in Milan, to deeply understand and love Spain.
In EMBT works is recurrent the research of sophisticated combinations and unusual applications of materials, with the frequent collaboration of talented artists, as Toni Cumella, coming from a long ceramist family tradition, for the Parc Dels Colors, 2002, Diagonal Mar Park, 2003, and Santa Caterina Market in 2005, until one of the most recent projects, Plateau Central Masterplan and Housing, at the periphery of Parisian suburbs, presented for this 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, that sees the contribution of the famous street artist JR.
“Living within a market - Outside space is also Home”, title of the installation, intends to emphasise the value embodied by an abandoned area transformed into a colorful plaza, similar to Santa Caterina Market in Barcelona, that will encourage the community’s participation and integration between the residents.
There is a frequent expression of Benedetta ’little by little’ that characterises some of her attempts, born as aspirations without any certainty of success but gradually developed into important projects, as for example the adventure in China, crowned by several gratifying, important projects, as the recent Conservatory of Music in Shenzhen, first prize winner in an international competition.
Kálida Sant Pau, part of an international network of hospitals created by the Scottish Maggie’s Foundation, finished almost a year ago, represents another moment of our talk, having been for Benedetta an occasion to reimagine healthcare and hospital facilities, providing patients with spaces full of light, in between greenery and nature, able to transmit a warm, serene atmosphere. And above this intervention, she will speak of another laudable and important initiative conceived in 2011, the creation of the Enric Miralles Foundation, whose goal is to promote experimental architecture.

Anna e Caterina vennero etichettate subito come le “italiane”. Aggettivo dal senso chiaramente dispregiativo, con qualche eccezione. Anna d’Este fu amata e rispettata. Caterina rimase, pur regina, l’“italiana”, l’intrusa, la figlia di banchieri, a rinfacciarle l’origine spuria dei Medici, quel lustro legato ai soldi più che al blasone. Nata a Firenze il 13 aprile 1519, sposò quattordicenne Enrico di Valois, secondogenito del Re. Nel tempo ottenne un potere immenso.

Quanto "seguiamo" chi pensiamo di amare? Quanto siamo rintracciabili, quanto vogliamo esserlo? Chiara e Giorgia riflettono sul disturbo ossessivo compulsivo di Caterina...ma è solo un pretesto per raccontare tutti i loro, di disturbi!
