    The Last Starfighter (1984)

    The Last Starfighter (1984)

There can be no doubt that 1984's The Last Starfighter was hugely influenced by the original Star Wars trilogy, which had, triumphantly, wrapped up with Return of the Jedi the year before its release. But is The Last Fighter a playful, zeitgeist-capturing homage to George Lucas's seminal space opera, or is it just a cheap knockoff? SPOILER ALERT: it is the latter. Given that fact, is it still pretty fun?

    Weekend At Bernie's 1989

    Weekend At Bernie's 1989

It's late August and time to visit your thieving labor day savior, Bernie. I'm a late comer to this punchline classic, but I'll be making it an annual destination in my end of summer movie rotation. I need to make up for lost time and atone for willfully avoiding this movie all these years.

The irony in Terry Kiser being lauded for his mastery of physical comedy while playing a dead man is not lost on me. Neither is Andrew McCarthy seamlessly playing against type while Jonathon Silverman turns in a walk-on leading role. And our video game heroine from 1984's Night Of The Comet, Catherine Mary Stewart, bringing a just little heart to this dark comedy.

It's too much and everything all at once. I feel like Christopher Columbus, just here taking the excited credit for an already discovered new world...to me.

    Summer of the 80s, Part 5: 1984 - Mid-80s Mutations (Night of the Comet & C.H.U.D.)

    Summer of the 80s, Part 5: 1984 - Mid-80s Mutations (Night of the Comet & C.H.U.D.)

Comet fever runs wild and city sewers should be off-limits! Look, comets can be exciting, I get that. But it just seems that it should go without saying that avoiding sewers is a good policy. Welcome to 1984.

Maybe everyone wanting to see the comet in Night of the Comet (1984) shouldn't be quite so eager? Unless you want to wake up as a pile of dust and clothes. Or some mutated zombie, and somehow not a pile of dust. Of course, if you were sleeping in a steel-reinforced projection booth, you're probably fine to go on living in this apocalyptic place.

And city streets seemed bad enough in the 80s. So, I can only assume that the sewers were even worse. C.H.U.D. (1984) seems to verify that. There are some kind of weird mutants down there. Radioactive waste. And come on, the smell cannot be particularly inviting.

The Summer of the 80s oozes on! And hey! Don't forget the Common Craig's Top 5 horror movies from 1984!

Ep. 51: Night of the Comet

Ep. 51: Night of the Comet

Zack and Zo find out what it's like to be one of the last teenagers on Earth. Endless shopping? No real responsibilities? Maybe, if it weren't for the mysterious, nefarious, evil genius think tank filled with scientists and the zombies roaming the Los Angeles landscape. Check out this re-cap of this unsung cult classic.

"Weekend at Bernie's": The Movie That Won't Die

"Weekend at Bernie's": The Movie That Won't Die

“Weekend at Bernie’s” was released in 1989. But 30 years later, people who haven't seen the movie still know its premise. So why won’t this film die?

In the second episode of What the Kids Were Watching, Sarah and Raf take a journey deep into the heart of 80s movie stereotypes. Hear about the high points of “Weekend at Bernie’s," like Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman’s hotness; the low points, like how most of the women are “furniture with boobs;" and the surprisingly great performances, like Terry Kiser as the titular “dead mobster marionette." You’ll also hear fun facts about the movie, like how Bernie’s house was built on an environmentally protected beach — Sarah has questions about this — as well as the film’s sequel...just kidding; they refuse to talk about the film’s terrible sequel. (Bonus feature: You can hear Sarah’s beloved dog Verona running around, flapping her ears, and snorting, all free of charge.)

    Weekend at Bernie's (1989)
018 - What can we say about Weekend at Bernie's that hasn't already been said? Well, just over 54 minutes worth of stuff as it turns out. Despite holding a place in our collective hearts over the last 30 years (yes 30 years!), there isn't a tonne of commentary out there about this film. So consider this your one stop shop for all things Bernie - strap yourselves in and feel the Bern!
