Discovering Your Purpose: How Change Influences Goals And Purpose icon

Discovering Your Purpose: How Change Influences Goals And Purpose icon

Jonmichael and Carlie discuss the concept of purpose and how it relates to change. They explain that purpose is derived from the experiences and circumstances that shape a person. They suggest that this purpose can be used to guide one’s decisions and actions and to help others who have gone through similar experiences. They argue that understanding and embracing one’s purpose can result in a more meaningful and fulfilling life. Ultimately, they encourage listeners to take the time to discover their own purpose and to use it as a guide for their future.

Jonmichael shared his story and how it has molded him into the person he is today. He mentioned having the word “purpose” tattooed on his ribs as a reminder of why he has been given the opportunity to live, as he was previously near death. He then discussed the platform that he has been given and how he uses it for a purpose, helping others to realign their lives and relationships. He believes that his story can help others and that this is his purpose in life.

The conversation starts with the idea of finding one's purpose and how to hone in on it. It then moves to how changes in life can affect one's purpose and how to deal with roadblocks that come along the way. The idea of being one's own CEO and treating oneself as a brand is then discussed, with the idea that one should be saying no to things that do not support one's mission. The conversation concludes with the idea that change is a guarantee in life. In conclusion, the conversation touches on the idea of finding one's purpose, being able to identify with it and making necessary changes in order to stay aligned with it.

The conversation explored the topic of midlife crisis and the difficulty of figuring out one's purpose in life. It was noted that everyone will go through hardship and that the only way to persevere is if it aligns with one's purpose. It was suggested that goals should be distinguished from opportunities, as opportunities may not align with one's goal and purpose. It was recommended to ask oneself what their eight year old self would cry about if they knew what was true about them now, as it helps to get in touch with one's passions. It was concluded that purpose can be felt when one is able to enjoy something that they are good at and that can help other people or help them become a better version of themselves. Finally, it was noted that some people may not have a purpose and need to adapt to change in order to find it.

Cleaner Planet: How to build a more Sustainable World

Cleaner Planet: How to build a more Sustainable World

In this opening episode of Season 3, eighteen year old Climate activist Sarah Syed emphasizes how small actions can lead to giant differences in preserving our planet and future.

Sarah talks about her journey and how she started taking an interest in the preservation of the climate. As a fourth grade project presenter in school, she learned that it wasn't just about global warming but so many other things like our food systems, fossil fuels and energy sustainability. Poverty is also a factor to contend with, she realized, and  how our actions have a long term effect on the planet.

Her journey began when she realized that humans weren't living in harmony with nature, leading to an equilibrium loss. She had to make small changes in her own life, such as using a reusable water bottle instead of a plastic one.

Our guest sees climate change as a gigantic puzzle piece. Need for renewable energy, tackling gender inequality and poverty, all contribute to climate change - as education could foster innovation to help solve and mitigate the issue. Sarah emphasizes the importance of taking action now in order to create a better future.

She believes that technology is not the only solution to addressing climate change and that in order to have a sustainable future, a balance of technology, community, businesses, government and individuals is necessary. Her passion for science and technology drove her to work on a project to create a biosorbant, or a sponge made from biomass, which can remove 98% of oil and heavy metals from water.

    We also talk about -
    - Why climate change is perceived just as global warming
    - Need to cut deforestation
    - Her involvement with "You are the change"
    - How youth of today can participate and make a difference
    - The different avenues that one can resort to and help resolve this crisis
    -  How to get involved in climate movements
    -  Mix of creating awareness and leadership, starting one's own climate journey.
    -  Sarah using her passion area to drive change - technology: bio sorbants, IoT in   agriculture, AI based transparent rotating solar cell, 3D printable biodegradable coffee pod
    -  Multi pronged approach : advocacy, innovation and incorporating personal life changes
    - Need to address our food eco system

Like my guest rightly put it, "It's more about how our actions of today and tomorrow can lead to more hope."

Tune in and derive actionable insights to build a more sustainable future!

How To Adapt To Change And Grow Emotionally

How To Adapt To Change And Grow Emotionally

In this episode, Carlie and Jonmichael discuss how to deal with change. Change is inevitable and it can be positive or negative. Most people don't handle change well and may even prefer the predictability of an unhappy situation to the uncertainty of change. The hosts discussed how change can be daunting and how it affects the mind and body. They concluded that change can be a challenging experience, but it can also bring positive outcomes. Carlie and Jonmichael talk about the feeling of being out of control when faced with change. It was pointed out that people often have a negative response to change as it can be uncomfortable. An example of this was given in the form of someone who frequents the same restaurant, ordering the same steak every time because it is predictable and always turns out the way they want it. It is also noted that if this person's go-to meal was taken off the menu, they would no longer go to the restaurant. This shows how many people are on autopilot and like to stick to what they know. This conversation focuses on the idea of change in life and how the brain is hardwired to conserve energy by staying in predictable situations. It is suggested that many people feel bored and under stimulated in their relationships and their lives, but lack the skills to make a change. The suggestion is made that people become underwhelmed when reality does not measure up to their expectations. This lack of knowledge and skills can paralyze people in their situation and many do not realize they need help. It is discussed how the brain works against us and how it can be trained to coach the brain. It is suggested that having an order to one’s life, such as following a procedure for work or for children, can bring structure and help people break out of their expectations. The conversation also mentions how sudden changes, such as job changes or divorce, can throw people into “whirlwinds of change” where they are not equipped to deal with the situation. It is suggested that having a strategy can help in these situations and provide the order needed to move forward.

    What is a MIDLIFE CRISIS?

    What is a MIDLIFE CRISIS?

We have all heard the phrase, Midlife Crisis. Jonmichael and Carlie break down the phases of what makes up a "midlife crisis." What does change do to your life at any stage? Are you the same person you were twenty, ten, or even five years ago? How do you handle the changes in your body? Are we going through a "midlife crisis," or are we not prepared for change?

Courage, Confidence, & Character with Eileen Higgins

Courage, Confidence, & Character with Eileen Higgins

Welcome to episode 39 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast.

This week my guest is Eileen Higgins, CEO, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore.

Eileen grew up in Monmouth County, NJ. Although, more of a behind the scenes type of child growing up, she actually did not realize she was preparing herself for leadership in other ways. She took a leadership role as the manager of the field hockey team in college and traveled with them internationally. This is a great story that she shares during the interview.

Now, she manages a team and organization in a totally different way. From wanting to be a school psychologist, to her first job out of college being in banking, to moving over to the not-for-profit or as I say for-impact sector. Eileen was volun-told as a teenager about the importance of giving back, as her mom worked in the not-for-profit sector as well. She was able to see firsthand the benefits of working for an organization that had a mission of giving back in some way to the community.

Eileen had always wanted to go back for her master's degree and at the age of 50 she shares how she decided, it was time! Now her career path has come full circle.  Although, she may not be a school psychologist, she is working both with schools and helping to empower girls with courage, confidence and true character.

Many of us know and love those girl scout cookies, but we do not necessarily know about all the programs that the Girl Scouts organization has to offer. Eileen uses her commitment to the mission and her team to ensure that girls in our community are building confidence, leadership skills, public speaking skills, independence, empowerment, and so much more. Girl scout badges are tied to a curriculum. Even Kindergartners are learning about coding, but in a way that is age appropriate. Go to gsfun.org to learn more.

Listen in to hear Eileen answer my final question, 'if I knew then, what I know now'. She shares a great and important message.

Thank you to Eileen for sharing her story and her time with all of us!

Next week, I welcome Tanuja Dehne, President & CEO, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. She shares her incredible purpose driven path that started with her first job milking cows on a dairy farm. Tanuja is now on a mission to pay it forward and mentor others. She shares that she is an introvert with an outward facing presence. So much more shared during this amazing interview. Make sure to listen in next week!

The joy of doing what you love!

An interactive and intriguing conversation about passion and dedication with a man who showcases sheer love and commitment, with his pure heart, to make it for the career of his dreams and how!

A man with so many feathers in his cap yet so humble and hungry to learn more and more. Keshav Sharma, an employee turned entrepreneur and a sports enthusiast who started as a cricketer and turned out to be an owner of India’s largest fleet of Parkour pro athletes - Vanarshala.

A story of an ordinary 9 to 7 working guy to become an extraordinary entrepreneur to follow his love for sports and fitness while also working on creating a safe space for people to be fit and strong. Yet, he never left a chance to engage with his multiple interests all along too.

Who is bigger, where does passion surface when pandemic hits and your one month old outdoor sports venture has no audience?

Dedication to Community with M Quentin Williams

Dedication to Community with M Quentin Williams

Welcome to the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast, episode 25, 'Dedication to Community' with M Quentin Williams, Founder & CEO of Dedication to Community.

Scott Chesney is back with me as my special guest co-host. Scott and I interview M. Quentin Williams. Quentin is known by his friends as Q.

In his childhood, Q lived on welfare for many years with his mom. Q believed that if he could just get a job in corporate America  than he would be ok. Carrying a a briefcase, wearing a raincoat, and having an office was the bar he set.

In school Q struggled with reading. He could speak and read phonetically well, but he basically faked it to get through. Through consistent study, he graduated at the top 5 of his class, but the struggle for him continued. He finally learned how to read efficiently in college.

Q shares that the shame he was carrying about not being able to read well and being on welfare was painful and that it impacted every relationship he had in life. Listen to how he set that shame free.

Q started his career as a bouncer and paralegal. Through determination and with assistance from a mentor that helped to steer his career path, Q become an attorney, an advocate, author-educator, sought after speaker and thought leader who draws on his personal history as a former FBI agent, federal prosecutor, and has held senior positions with the NFL, Jacksonville  Jaguars, and the NBA.

Q says, ''it must be noted that you never truly make it. There is always going to be  challenges and struggles." He goes on to say the acceptance of the journey is the best part of life.

When Q worked for the Jacksonville Jaguars he was told that in sports you are nobody until someone fires you. Yet, at that point Q had thought he was on the journey to become a sport teams GM and eventually own a team. When he moved on to the NBA he was let go. He thought he was just about to make it! At that point he decided it was time to be the entrepreneur he knew he could be. He felt like something was missing after he launched a few companies and that is when Dedication to Community was born in 2012.  D2C delivers skills-building workshops and ongoing forums to improve understanding and build relationships in communities through healing, reconciliation and unity. Its experts work with government agencies and the private sector by training and advising on critical issues in public safety and law enforcement, as well as diversity, belonging and equity.

He is the proud father of a son and daughter, and credits his first-born as the inspiration for writing the survival guide, How NOT to get KILLED by the POLICE. This is a very important part of the interview!

Listen at 45 minutes about a story that Q shares. By hearing Q share his story it gave someone in the audience permission to share hers. Connecting helps us all to grow.

Take a listen to what Q has to say to, if I knew than what I know now. Please click Dedication to Community for more information about D2C. Thank you to M Quentin Williams for sharing his heart, light, and the amazing work he is doing to ensure that law enforcement and our community members are communicating better.
