"Keep Your Post & Do Your Duty!" w/ Pastor Manny Mill

"Keep Your Post & Do Your Duty!" w/ Pastor Manny Mill

Today we do our first ever “on the road” in person podcast interview. Thanks to a generous donation from a co-worker of mine, I was able to purchase equipment to make this podcast possible. I traveled to Wheaton, Illinois to meet with Pastor Manny Mill from “Koinonia House National Ministries” at his home.

Pastor Manny’s life begins back in Cuba where as a young kid he sees Fidel Castro come into power. His family is finally able to flee Cuba after many years and they end up in Spain. A couple of years later they make their way to the United States and land in New Jersey. As a young man Manny begins to accomplish the “American Dream.” He gains the big three, "power, sex and money." Because of a shady business deal he finds himself being investigated by the F.B.I.  He flees the country and ends up in Venezuela. While on the run in Venezuela, his mother becomes a born-again Christian and begins to pray for her son Manny.  Through a series of events God grabs a hold of Manny and he decides to return back to the United States to face the music. He gets sentenced to three years behind bars. It is in prison that God begins to transform Manny's life and where the journey to the work he is doing today begins. You will be encouraged, challenged and prompted into action by this man's radical story of redemption.

“The Mission of Koinonia House® National Ministries (KHNM) is to equip the local church to receive Christian inmates released from prison to be integrated into the Church, the workplace, and society through biblical discipleship”

There are two primary avenues through which KHNM seeks to assure that Christian neighbors coming out of prison are met at the prison gate: assist churches, groups or individuals in setting up a post-prison ministry discipleship home for Christians coming out of prison; equipping local churches to prepare to receive a Christian neighbor – matching at least one ex-prisoner to one local church.

Our Actions Have An Impact On Others

Our Actions Have An Impact On Others

    Hello everyone!

Welcome to our last episode of 2023.

This week I am introducing the outstanding Orville Morales onto the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. Orville has had 20 years experience working in activism and education, serving as campaign manager for the public goods project as well as working at Montclair State University as an adjunct professor. These experiences led him to open Morales and Associates, an organization meant to drive people-focused decision making in different organizations, with its slogan being “power to people”.

Orville Morales’s life began in a state of dual immigration, as he spent some of his childhood in New Jersey and some in the Dominican Republic. During this time, he struggled with identity, he felt stuck in between two worlds and eventually he came out creating his own definition of his identity rather than simply accepting what others told him he was.

His mission over the last 20 years has been to inspire people to realize that they matter. Morales “decided to become an educator to moderate discussions of others and create a runway for people to prepare themselves to get involved” with impacting government, becoming activists, advocating for change. This includes people who align with any and all backgrounds, political statuses, and beliefs. Within his experience, he has come across those who refuse to accept certain ways of being or ideas. On addressing those who are deemed closed minded, Orville states, “we have to be willing to accept human paradox”. He recommends giving those who disagree with you “grace” when entering a difficult conversation.

Through his work at Morales and Associates, Orville aims to “help people get involved in the decision making, not just the reactions to the decisions” Morales references the heated political climate during covid as an example of what he works to prevent, seeking to direct individuals away from heated debates amongst each other and towards organizing in an attempt to enact lasting change. He lives by the idea, “voices should be felt rather than just heard”.

However, Orville admits to the fact that his line of work can easily lead to burnout, and explains how he avoids this by training nonprofit leaders. By pouring his wisdom into others, he avoids burnout and creates a collaborative mission to “work with institutions to change them, not necessarily wait for the institutions to change”. Morales has seen hope more than anything throughout his years working in his practice. He has witnessed people of all ages be able to “envision a brighter future” through collaborating with organizations addressing health, housing, and food insecurity. Orville Morales can be found and contacted through his website, moralesandassociates.com, or on linkedin under his name. He recommends people to definitely get involved and engaged in the work of being a changemaker and he has proven through his excellent achievements that it is in fact a fulfilling and necessary position.

Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram @todayisthedayliveit.
    Have a great week everyone!

Ep 90: GSGC - Making the Giving Circle Bigger

Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃  In the spirit of the season, Cara is joined by 3 special guests from Global Sojourns Giving Circle, who put gratitude at the top of their list today, and every day!

We first met founder Priscilla Plummer and mentor Gloria Mubita just over a year ago, when we explored how the GSGC operating model aligned with their mission. They empower young women and girls in Southern Africa who lack access to education or emotional services by partnering with local mentors and changemakers. These dedicated mentors provide guidance, leadership training, health education, and academic support with the aim of breaking the cycle of poverty, driven by the vision: Everyone Deserves the Opportunity to Live a Life of Dignity!

Already making great inroads by 2022, the organization has flourished in the last year. Expanding services to include boys and young men has been culturally challenging, but mentor Nyika Muyambo’s successful strategy is evident in the boy’s clubs’ long wait lists. Together, Gloria and Nyika have stepped up their outreach game by starting a podcast, GSGC Talk Radio, which reaches a much wider audience. They ensure that as many young people and mentors as possible benefit from the support the clubs have to offer. You can listen to them here:  https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gsgivingcircle

Ep 84: Storytelling Strategies for Giving Season Success with Carly Euler

Fundraising campaigns that incorporate video receive over 110% more funding than campaigns that don’t.

So, why aren’t we all using video? Because gathering content is hard! Not unlike herding cats, according to nonprofits who have recognized the value but have been unable to create a content collection process that works.

Carly Euler, Marketing Manager at Memory Fox, a platform that helps nonprofit marketers collect, organize, and share powerful storytelling content from their community of donors simply and effectively, shares her insights into creating an effective 3-step plan that delivers!

Join Jena and Carly to take control of your visual storytelling this Giving Season, make the most of the year-end generosity to move your mission, and establish a sound visual storytelling strategy that will support your fundraising in the years to come.

EP 81: 3 Ways to Win Back LYBUNT Donors

Everyone knows it’s easier to hold on to donors than find new ones, but how can you hold onto donors or win them back if you don’t know who they are? 😕

But, here’s the bright side. These are not disaffected donors, and there are ways to bring them back into your donor family.

To reconnect with your LYBUNT donors and develop long-lasting relationships, join Cara for 10 minutes of techniques and stewardship Pro-Tips, plus advice on how to use online donor management systems to track your donor retention rate.
