    Chesed and Chaverim

    Chesed and Chaverim

Part of becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Marlboro Jewish Center is doing an act of chesed, or kindness, for those less fortunate than you are. Every year, our 7th graders find new and exciting projects that are special to them and use those projects to give back to their community.

This week Rabbi Pont gave our 7th graders the chance to tell you, the For the Love of Judaism audience, about their projects.

Chayei Sarah: A Marriage of Truth and Kindness

Chayei Sarah: A Marriage of Truth and Kindness

The Midrash says that chesed and emet, Kindness and Truth, disagreed about whether God should create humankind. And the puzzling outcome of that argument was: “God took Truth and threw it to the earth.” But what does that actually mean? The answer may be in Parshat Chayei Sarah, where chesed and emet “meet up” for the very first time in a rather surprising place: the story of how Rebecca was chosen to be Isaac’s wife.

Join Ari Levisohn and Tikva Hecht as they dig into the details of this story and uncover a message about our human struggle to understand what God means by “truth.

    Parshat Vayera: Lot's Fake Kindness

    Parshat Vayera: Lot's Fake Kindness

Parshat Vayera tells the story of visiting angels being graciously hosted, not once but twice! Abraham's hospitality is legendary, and Lot's welcoming the angels feels like a de ja vu...until things turn ugly.

What went wrong? How could Lot's act of kindness to the angels end so disastrously?

Join Rabbi David Fohrman and Ari Levisohn as they explore two very similar stories of hospitality and uncover the most important ingredient in true kindness.

Psalm 44: Redeem Us for the Sake of Your Love

Psalm 44: Redeem Us for the Sake of Your Love

    Psalm 44

Andrew and Edwin come to the final segment of Psalm 44 (vss. 23-26). The tone doesn't get any better. However, the psalm moves from strict lament to absolute begging and pleading. And in its final words, we find a subtle explanation of the Psalmist's motivation. His motivation is not merely his comfort and ease. Once again, we find the reason for the prayer is God's glory.

    Psalm 40: No Restraint

    Psalm 40: No Restraint

    Psalm 40

Andrew and Edwin talk about David's lack of restraint that made him certain God would lack restraint. David had no restraint when it came to praising God, he was certain God would have no restraint when it came to showing steadfast love and faithfulness.

Psalm 36: You Must Go Through the Door

Psalm 36: You Must Go Through the Door

    Psalm 36

Andrew and Edwin remember that song from their childhood, "It's so high you can't get over it." God's love and faithfulness reaches to the heavens. His judgments and righteousness go down to the depths. Sounds familiar, doesn't it. Guess we'll have to go through the door. And even though it isn't Friday, they talk about who that door is.

    Psalm 32: But Where's Jesus?

    Psalm 32: But Where's Jesus?

    Psalm 32

Andrew and Edwin have asserted we should be able to find Jesus in everyone of the psalms. So, where is He in Psalm 32. Our hosts discuss how Jesus is actually everywhere in this psalm.

Psalm 26: I Love Your Grace

Psalm 26: I Love Your Grace

    Psalm 26

David loved the Lord's house. He also loved the Lord's grace. After all, it was only because of the Lord's grace that he was allowed to dwell in the Lord's house. And that grace sometimes took on shocking forms.

Psalm 25: A Reason to Pray

Psalm 25: A Reason to Pray

    Psalm 25

As Andrew and Edwin wrap up this week's conversations on Psalm 25, Edwin reveals the second most important lesson he has ever learned about prayer. It is demonstrated by the meditations of this psalm. He encourages each of us to walk through the very habit demonstrated by David here of thinking through and finding a reason anchored in God's character, nature, will, word, promises for which God would or should respond to whatever prayer you are offering. It's not deal-making, it's drawing closer to God.

Psalm 23: The Lord is My Host

Psalm 23: The Lord is My Host

    Psalm 23

Some see the sheep/Shepherd metaphor running through all of Psalm 23. Most see a shift to a guest/Host metaphor. Either way, the second half of the psalm is just as comforting as the first. Andrew and Edwin discuss sitting at a table in the presence of enemies, overflowing cups, anointed heads, and the pursuit of goodness and mercy.
