Episode 332 - Tansy Boggon - Bring Yourself Into Your Work, Body Image, Joyful Eating and Childlessness

Tansy Boggon is a nutritionist and author of non-fiction, fiction and children’s books. Based in Christchurch, New Zealand, Tansy writes to help people break free of diet rules and diet mentality to embrace the joy of food without guilt and shame. She has written a novel, The Tears of a Woman, which weaves her own childlessness journey into a fictional story.

Author | Mindfulness Blogger | Nutritionist

specialising in a non-diet and mindful eating approach

Tansy Boggon, ANutr (Associate Nutritionist – The Nutrition Society of Australia), BAppSc(Hons), GCertHumNutr

I am an author, mindfulness blogger, recipe developer and university-qualified nutritionist with a passion for inspiring people to enjoy eating to nourish their body and for the pure pleasure of it — because I believe that eating is one of life’s joys.

I believe feeding ourselves shouldn’t be about deprivation, counting calories or portion control, which I believe do more to sabotage our health and happiness. It is my belief, through personal experience, exploration of the scientific literature and working with clients, that when we relax our diet rules and focus on the experience of eating, we can nourish our bodies in an intuitive and joyful way.

Through nutrition counselling, writing and workshops, I aim to demystify diet and nutrition myths, dispel confusion and ease the anxiety often associated with eating. I want to promote a joyful attitude towards food, irrespective of a person’s weight or size — because these aren’t accurate measures of health and happiness anyway!

I have experience providing one-on-one and group coaching, workshops, writing food and nutrition articles and recipe development. I incorporate a non-dieting approach, mindful eating, eating psychology, a passion for cooking and a love of eating into my work. You can find me sipping a latte, drooling over cookbooks, tapping away at my laptop or chopping veggies in the kitchen — all are joys to me!

S1 #E2 Jessica Hepburn: Turning Life into an Adventure

S1 #E2 Jessica Hepburn: Turning Life into an Adventure

Jessica Hepburn is an award-winning author, arts producer and adventure activist. In 2022 she became the first woman in the world to complete the 'Sea, Street, Summit Challenge’ - that is: swim the English Channel, run the London Marathon and climb Mount Everest - all of which were inspired by her own journey through infertility and IVF. She is the author of two books - The Pursuit of Motherhood and 21 Miles: swimming in search of the meaning of motherhood; the former CEO of the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith and Fertility Fest; and has been officially recognised as a ‘Woman of Suffragette Spirit’ by Amnesty International.

In this episode, Jessica talks about her first book - The Pursuit of Motherhood - which is a raw and honest description of her journey through 11 rounds of unsuccessful fertility treatment. This led to Jessica setting up Fertility Fest, which brought together artists and fertility specialists to explore infertility. She also discusses her second book - 21 Miles - which chronicles her inspiring journey to successfully swim the channel and how along the way, she ate with 21 women and asked them “does motherhood make you happy or can you have a fulfilling life without children”. Jessica also talks about running the London Marathon and how she finally conquered Everest to become the first woman in the world to complete the sea, street, summit challenge. Listen in to find out what motivates Jessica, what makes her happy and her advice to her younger self.

008: Missing – Comfort for Mothers' Day

008: Missing – Comfort for Mothers' Day

Although Mothers' Day was back in March here in the UK, for most of the world it was just around the corner when this was recorded.

For our May episode, This Now seeks to offer comfort to those for whom this day is challenging or painful.

    * * * * *

    PRACTICAL ADVICE:

    1) Before the day, think about how you're likely to feel

    - Then plan to put things in place that will help you with those feelings
         - E.g. calming experiences, supportive people, etc.

    - Plan to avoid people or situations that will not be healthy for you at this time

    - Give yourself permission to opt out of situations, gatherings, etc.

    - Have a planned answer if you don't want to talk about things
         - E.g.: I'm doing as well as can be under the circumstances - how are things with you?

    2) Remember it's absolutely fine to do whatever you need to do to pass the day in a healthy way:

    - Spend the day alone, remembering the person you've lost

    - Talk to people you trust

    - Cry if you need to, either alone or with others

    - Meet up with other people who are in the same position as you are

    - Do something that you feel honours your experiences

    - Do things that make you feel connected to the person you've lost

    - Skip the thing altogether!
         - Again, give yourself permission to opt out.

    3) Remember there's no right or wrong way to handle your pain!

    - It is your pain - find what works for you

    - Nobody else gets to decide how you should feel

    4) Remember it's okay to not be okay!

    5) Be kind to yourself

Transparency is my only weapon with Eirini Kartsaki

Transparency is my only weapon with Eirini Kartsaki

Oriana Fox interviews the insatiable, sexy and weird performance artist Eirini Kartsaki who expounds her Manifesto and entices Oriana to show more cleavage. More accurately, Oriana listens to her guest and sometimes interjects with a question or two as Kartsaki fleshes out what it means to live a life free from norms and expectations, a life that is weird, inconsistent, too much and without children. In doing so she calls for a revaluation of inconsistency, uncertainty and instability. Kartsaki's top tip for self care (spoiler alert), is to scream 'lawlessness' ten times in a row. Lawlessness! Lawlessness! Lawlessness! Lawlessness! Lawlessness! Lawlessness! Lawlessness! Lawlessness! Lawlessness! Lawlessness!

The interview was recorded live on Instagram in May 2021 as part of Oriana's digital residency at Mimosa House Gallery. You'll want to watch the episode here to witness all the cleavage that's mentioned herein.

Oriana Fox is a London-based, New York-born artist with a PhD in self-disclosure. She puts her expertise to work as the host of the talk show performance piece The O Show.

Eirini Kartsaki is a writer, performance maker and lecturer in East15 Acting School, University of Essex. Her work explores sexuality, excess and female desire. She has been awarded the Audiences Award and the Champe Libre Award for her work with Tante&Tante. Her performances take place across art, theatre and academic contexts including Tate Britain, V&A, Whitechapel Gallery, Sadler's Wells, Camden People's Theatre, Arnolfini, The Yard, Chisenhale Dance Space, Palais de Tokyo, amongst others.

Loss 3/101: Loss of fertility: Chris & Claire Sandys (Part 2)

#003. Part 2. This second part of Episode 003 is us again (the hosts, Chris & Claire Sandys) as we continue to share our story of being a childless couple.

This is The Silent Why, a podcast on a mission to open up conversations around loss and grief and to see if hope can be found in 101 different types of loss.

Loss #3 of 101 continued: Loss of fertility

In Part 1, we spoke about our personal story with infertility over the last 11 years and turning down medical intervention, before drawing a line in the sand. You'll want to check that out before this episode probably: https://www.thesilentwhy.com/podcast/episode/492a29c1/loss-of-fertility-chris-and-claire-sandys-part-1

In Part 2, we answer questions anonymously submitted by friends. Questions they’d like to ask a couple without children, or things they’re curious about.

    Such as:
How do you feel when people close to you continue to have babies?
How do you find ways to fill the gaps left by childlessness?
How do you deal with the insensitive questions, graciously?
In what practical ways can friends and family best support you?

    Single, Childless, Alone?

Grace (single and childless) and Laura (married but childless) talk about what it's like to be in these categories inside a church that focuses much on family. How can we, in this season, keep our eyes not on what seems to be missing, but on all that God has for us now. And how can those in the church best show love to those that fit in these categories?
Fun Fact: This happens to be the very first episode Laura and Grace recorded for Fragments of Blue.
