’Wizard of Boz’ redemption game, Steelers survive Bears

Hosts Ike Taylor and Mark Bergin react to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ comeback 29-27 victory against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.

Other topics include: Odell Beckham Jr.’s next team, Jordan Love’s struggles in his first start, Josh Allen vs. Josh Allen and the AFC’s best team.

James Pierre’s interception seals Week 5 win over Broncos

The Pittsburgh Steelers snapped their three-game losing streak Sunday in a 27-19 win against the Denver Broncos.

“Bleav in Steelers” co-hosts Ike Taylor and Mark Bergin recap how the Steelers finally reestablished their running game with rookie Najee Harris by putting Ben Roethlisberger under center.

Harris ran for a career-best 122 yards and a touchdown.

Sunday marked the first game the Steelers ran it (35 rushing attempts) more than they passed it (25 passing attempts) since Week 6 of the 2020 season.

JuJu Smith-Schuster is expected to miss time with a shoulder injury, and Chris Boswell made two field goals.

The Broncos picked on cornerback James Pierre on Sunday, but the second-year player delivered when it mattered most with a game-clinching interception late in the fourth quarter.

Other topics include: Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs’ incredible play, Los Angels Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert’s dominance in year two and the Kansas Chiefs’ struggles this season.

“Bleav in Steelers” hosts Ike Taylor and Mark Bergin discuss how T.J. Watt’s groin injury could impact the Pittsburgh Steelers beyond Week 2.

The question now is this: Will Watt miss any additional time after the injury?

The guys also talked about how several other Steelers either got injured or didn’t play in the Week 2 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Other topics discussed include: the Steelers' offensive struggles, Steelers rookie running back Najee Harris’ first NFL touchdown, Mike Tomlin’s decision to punt on a 4th down and 1 play in the fourth quarter while down two scores, Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs’ 61-yard touchdown and kicker Chris Boswell’s 56-yard field goal.

State Demographer quizzed by lawmakers at Valley redistricting hearing

State Demographer quizzed by lawmakers at Valley redistricting hearing

AUSTIN, Texas - A recent Senate Special Committee on Redistricting hearing designed to hear testimony from Rio Grande Valley residents only heard from two.

The two were Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell and Brownsville community leader Michael Seifert. Their testimony has been covered by the Rio Grande Guardian. Click here to read about Boswell’s remarks. Click here to read what Seifert said.

The rest of the one-hour hearing was dominated by the remarks of State Demographer Lloyd Potter and questions of Potter by state Sens. Eddie Lucio of Brownsville, Juan Hinojosa of McAllen, and Carol Alvarado of Houston.

The Senate Special Committee on Redistricting is gathering testimony from around the state of Texas in advance of the redrawing of congressional and legislative boundaries. These have to be done every ten years, soon after new census data is published. The data collated under Census 2020 will be published later this spring.

Potter said in the hearing that he expects the 2020 Census to undercount the number of residents in the Valley. If left unchallenged this will mean less federal funding for the Valley than should be apportioned.

Potter said Texas has grown enough over the last ten years to probably mean three additional U.S. House seats will be awarded to the Lone Star State.

Valley residents can still tune in and speak at other Senate Special Committee on Redistricting hearings. They can also submit written testimony.

NFL Wild Card weekend is here + JuJu's quote about the Browns

NFL Wild Card weekend is here + JuJu's quote about the Browns

Ike Taylor and Mark Bergin discuss the Pittsburgh Steelers hosting the Cleveland Browns on Sunday night in their AFC Wild Card game.

Kevin Stefanski will not coach for the Browns because he tested positive for COVID-19. However, Bergin points out that the bigger loss for the Browns is playing without Pro Bowl left guard Joel Bitonio.

Also, Bergin trusts Steelers kicker Chris Boswell much more than Browns kicker Cody Parkey.

Taylor and Bergin also discuss how several media members did not put JuJu Smith-Schuster’s comments about the Browns into proper context.

The guys also make their picks against the spread ahead of Wild Card weekend, and debate the NFL’s most desirable head-coaching vacancies.

Vasquez: In Starr County, some COVID patients will be sent away to die

Vasquez: In Starr County, some COVID patients will be sent away to die

RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas - Physicians in Starr County’s only hospital will soon have to chose which COVID-19 patients they will treat and which ones will be left to die.

That was the grim message from Starr County Health Authority Dr. Jose Vasquez. Interviewed by Dave Brown of Texas Standard, Vasquez said: “We are getting to the point where we are going to have to make tough decisions about who should be getting ventilatory support and a high level of care here or who do we believe is not going to be able to make it alive. So resources will have to be redirected for those that have better chances.”

Starr County, with a population of about 61,000, has 1,432 confirmed coronavirus cases. Its only major medical facility, Starr County Memorial Hospital, cannot cope, said Vasquez.

Vasquez said deciding who lives and dies is the hardest decision a physician will ever have to face.

“We have to swear a duty to protect every life equally regardless, no discrimination. But here, it is just basically a matter of applying mass critical care guidelines and choosing between people who actually have a fighting chance to come alive of this significant intentness care procedures versus the ones who because they are so sick or aged or have chronic conditions, they are not going to have a chance so we will redirect those resources that have actually a chance to survive.”

Texas Standard reporter Brown also interviewed Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell.

Texas Standard is part of the National Public Radio network. Although the Rio Grande Valley does not have an NPR station, NPR programming is being provided on a digital streaming service by KEDT-FM of Corpus Christi. KEDT is media partner of the Rio Grande Guardian.

Cavazos: We're back-mapping baccalaureate degrees into the high school

Cavazos: We're back-mapping baccalaureate degrees into the high school

HARLINGEN, Texas - In an interview with the Rio Grande Guardian, UTRGV President Bailey said the early college high school being developed by the university and HCISD is unique.

“When you think of an early college high school, this is how it should be done. Our students will graduate as juniors in high school, everything they take will not only count as college credit, it will count toward their degree. That is a key distinction you need to make,” Bailey said.

“Almost every college course, you can get credit for it. Will it count towards your degree? We are committed to that. That is so important in helping students graduate in a timely manner and keeping their debt low.”

HCISD Superintendent Art Cavazos agreed with Bailey’s viewpoint that the school district’s partnership with UTRGV was unprecedented.

“What is unique about this partnership is we are back-mapping baccalaureate degrees into the high schools. So the students are actually starting as early as 9th grade, beginning to get student experiences, summer experiences, to prepare them in the soft skills needed to persist in a baccalaureate degree,” Cavazos said.

“We are super excited because kids will be able to start their baccalaureate pathways as early as 10th and 11th grade.”

This podcast features interviews with UT-Rio Grande Valley President Guy Bailey, Harlingen CISD Superintendent Art Cavazos, and Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell.
