Episode 53: A Phoenix Rising from the Ashes: former US Rep Chris Collins

Episode 53: A Phoenix Rising from the Ashes: former US Rep Chris Collins

My guest today is American entrepreneur and politician, Christopher Collins. Chris served as the U.S. representative for New York's 27th congressional district (Buffalo NY area) from 2013 until 2019. Prior to his time in Congress, he ran for Erie County Executive in 2007 on a platform of smaller county government, lower taxes and operating efficiency and he defeated the Democrat incumbent with 63% of the vote in a county with 140,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans. Quite an accomplishment.

Unlike many of our elected representatives in our 3-tier constitutional republic, Chris was a successful entrepreneur and business guy long before he ran for public office. That means he built something of value to society that employed others in our free enterprise system. After earning his BS in Mechanical Engineering and MBA, Chris started his career as a mechanical engineer at Westinghouse Electric. In 1983, Westinghouse spun off their gear division, and Chris rose to be CEO of the Nuttall Gear Corporation located in Niagara Falls, New York. In 1997, Collins sold Nuttall to Colfax Corporation.

Chris moved to Florida a couple years ago and he and his wife, Mary, have three children and three grandchildren. Full disclosure: Chris’ younger brother Ted and I were fraternity brothers at Syracuse University.

EP 29 - Jon Borovich, Assistant Coach at Northwestern University

EP 29 - Jon Borovich, Assistant Coach at Northwestern University

    Coach Jon Borovich’s Story.
In this episode, you’ll hear from Jon Borovich. Jon is currently an assistant coach for Coach Chris Collins at Northwestern University. Jon is entering year three as a Big 10 Assistant Coach. Jon played at Central Michigan for Coach Jay Smith. You will soon hear that Coach Smith truly propelled Jon into Coaching. After his playing career concluded, Jon has had the opportunity to work for some incredible leaders: Coach Tom Izzo at Michigan State, Coach Greg Kampe at Oakland, Coach Brian Gregory at Dayton, and Coach Mark Montgomery at Northern Illinois. Jon provides such an eloquent tribute to the coaches that have paved the way for him. Jon Borovich’s coaching philosophy is “Best is the Standard in Everything We Do.” I feel that this podcast episode is a great representation of Jon’s elite level mindset. From sharing tips on developing player relationships and getting players better on the floor to high-level attributes that assistants should bring to an assistant position and recruiting advice that works for him, Jon is so giving to young coaches. Finally, Coach Borovich details a parenting tip that he learned from current UCLA Head Coach Mick Cronin that is a must listen for parents. Trust me, it is sensational. Jon strives to make the players he coaches one percent better everyday. No doubt, we will all get better after listening to this Big 10 assistant!
