    Psalm 37:1-9

    Subtitle

In Psalm 37, David contrasts the fleeting success of evildoers with the lasting inheritance of the godly who trust, commit to their purpose, and wait patiently on the Lord.

    Summary

This business devotional examines Psalm 37:1-9 where David contrasts evildoers and godly people. Evildoers may seem to prosper rapidly through compromise but will ultimately face consequences. Alternatively, devoting yourself to the mission God gave you, waiting patiently on His timing and direction, yields lasting success.

Don't envy success achieved hastily outside God's principles - that path leads to a dead end. Fixed focus fuels momentum. You can't control others’ actions but you can trust God’s justice.

Trust God has equipped you for the plans He has for you. Commit to the purpose He revealed. Move patiently with divine order, act justly with divine empowerment. God's design enables inheritance on Earth.

Stay vigilant against distraction and temptation by filling your mind with wisdom from those walking faithfully. Evaluate ambitions against biblical standards. Consider whether opposition exposes misalignment from Godly principles woven into the fabric of reality.

    Top 3 Growth Tips

    • [5:41] Trusting God relieves mental burden so your mind can focus. "Trust is the language of the heart, faith is the language of the mind."
    • [10:22] Don’t envy bad people. Ungodly shortcuts lead to failure. Focus on running your own race well.
    • [23:44] Waiting on God is active engagement - having faith God made you for plans He has for you.

[17:12] God will balance justice ultimately - avoid retaliation so you can stay focused.

    Reference:

    Philippians 3:7-10

Pursuing ambitious goals requires willingness for sacrifice and investment at a level aligned with the desired outcome; we must apply effort and commitment proportional to the greatness we seek.

    Summary

In this business devotional, the speaker explores principles from Philippians 3 regarding the pursuit of worthwhile ambitions. He shares that achieving anything truly great involves investment and sacrifice rather than mediocrity.

The speaker reflects on consulting many businesses and finding the differentiating factor between success and failure is commitment to the goal's importance. People express desires for great outcomes without strong motivations. But big goals require proportionate effort and input.

Additionally, knowledge itself holds value as a map guiding action. Though preparing has merits, many never apply insight to achieve the very thing they want. Success demands applied knowledge combined with strategic action.

Nurturing relationship with God also helps lonely entrepreneurs. No matter one's level of leadership, connecting to divine wisdom and comfort remains vital. The speaker closes wondering if entrepreneurs invested more in prayer and spiritual fellowship, they may feel less isolated while pursuing their mission.

    Top 3 Growth Tips

    • Sacrifice Level Dictates Achievement Level - To accomplish great things, you must be willing to sacrifice greatly with investments matching the outcome's significance. Otherwise you likely don't value that goal enough to attain it. [4:22]
    • Knowledge Informs But Action Creates - Learning alone fails to produce results. While knowledge holds immense value, you must apply insights rather than endlessly preparing to act. [9:04]
    • Godly Relationship Counters Leadership Loneliness - Success often requires carrying burdens alone. But drawing close to God provides companionship amidst isolation from limiting vulnerable sharing. [16:55]

The Backwards Path To Promise (Business Devo)

    Scripture Reference:

    Hebrews 6: 13-20

God's promises require patient pursuit. Like Abraham, we must endure trials and anchor our hopes through wisdom to obtain the vision God gives us.

    Summary:

In this business devotional, we explore Hebrews 6:13-20 and the idea that God's promises are an anchor for our soul. But they must be actively obtained through patience, endurance and wisdom.

The passage examines Abraham's life. Though God promised him greatness, Abraham had to patiently endure and wait many years before seeing this promise fulfilled. He obtained it through tireless belief and hope.

This reminds entrepreneurs that God's promises are not passively received. We must pursue them through challenges and delays, keeping faith when doubt creeps in.

Patience and wisdom are wrongly seen today as weak or slow. But they require great inner strength and control. The truth is cultivating them leads to success and obtaining our vision. Even the highest performers like Abraham exude patience, avoid complaining and submit to God's timing.

So anchor your soul in God's promises. But also know you must endure hardship and grow in wisdom to fully obtain them. With belief and hope, you will achieve the great plans He has for you.

E48: Stop Following the Shiny Objects

E48: Stop Following the Shiny Objects

Nothing gets a passionate creative off track faster than "shiny object syndrome" .... dropping your current project to chase off after something new. But this type of distraction is one of the biggest barriers to making progress on our goals and projects.  Listen in on Episode 48 of Just One Simple Thing for three tips to avoid shiny object syndrome.

I’ve worked with dozens of Christian writers, entrepreneurs and other creatives, but  the ones that have struggled most to make progress on their goals have had one common barrier … shiny object syndrome.   Before they can finish what they are working on, they get another great idea and off they go.

In 2 Corinthians 8, Paul was encouraging the church to follow through with a commitment they made.  I love the Message version of verse 11, where it says, “The best thing you can do right now is to finish what you started last year and not let those good intentions grow stale. Your heart’s been in the right place all along. You’ve got what it takes to finish it up, so go to it.”

So if you want to get better at finishing what you start, and avoid the shiny object distractions, here are four tips to help you focus until the end.

    • Define what "finished" means.
    • Remember that the reward comes after the finish.
    • Put the shiny object at the finish line.
    • Be sure your support system includes accountability.

    ACTION STEP

I’ve created an accountability template for you. Head over to my free FB group, Plan & Pray with Do A New Thing, and grab a graphic you can use to publicly declare what you are going to finish and what idea you’ll work on next when you reach the finish line.
