Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) is all grown up and now has to tackle Christmas as a Dad. The classic holiday movie finally has the sequel everyone, or no one was asking for. Sprinkled in with some fun call back, this will likely be a must-watch for families this holiday season. But is it a good trailer, and better yet, does it look like a good movie? Let's break it all down. This is Trailer Talk.

Ep 61: Christmas Ramblings With Mike Brampton And Julian Hoad

Join us for our Christmas ramblings as we spread some festive cheer for the end of the year.

We share our differing opinions on Christmas and Julian recalls a rather embarrassing experience of working on-call on Christmas Day.  Our special episode wouldn't be complete without a lot of festive dad jokes and a double whammy of 60-second CPD,  discussing the potential origins of Rudolf's red nose and the best way to procure quality alcoholic drinks in time for your festive celebrations.

We also discuss classic Christmas songs that we love (and hate), Christmas morning champagne traditions,  the ultimate Christmas film and Mike & Julians uncanny resemblance to a certain pair of muppets.

Lastly, Mikes shares with us his recent trip to Svalbard, near the North Pole, and the various animals he saw there including polar bears!

Thank you to each and every one of you who have tuned in to our show, we'll be back in January with more fantastic guests interviews that we hope you enjoy!

    Episode 44 - Ebanana Scrooge

    Episode 44 - Ebanana Scrooge

Welcome to The Total Christmas Podcast, it's December and it really is Christmas and it's another packed show.

First up Ed Daley reads another part from his book.  This time he explains how a clerical error led to It's A Wonderful Life becoming one of the most popular Christmas films of all time.
If you want to read more, check out his book:
    https://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Book-Ultimate-Favorite-Holiday/dp/B09HS14DFM

Next up we have the story of the worst Christmas present that Kevin Church ever received, turns out, if he'd received it a year earlier it may have been one of the best.

Then we chat to Aurelio O'Brien author of Family Trees.  It's a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed.  If you'd like to pick up a copy, here's a link:
    https://www.amazon.com/Family-Trees-Aurelio-OBrien/dp/1935927310

Then it's the 2nd part of our chat with Scott & Jay from the Jingle Jank Podcast.  We listen to 3 more songs, if you want a listen, here's some links:

One More Sleep by Leona Lewis
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-_1-uJ6Ml4

Then the girls are back again for Robin Sings and they have another stab at Last Christmas.

It's been a few episodes but once again we look at another version of A Christmas Carol.  This one is the fantastic new Aldi Christmas advert.  It's only 1 minute 20 seconds but they pack a lot in.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW-PhgjyNSs

Then we have a new segment, each week we'll be playing a song from Adam Kennedy and his Creative Commonaires,  Their songs are very funny and the album is called Literally Shrunk Down and Living in my Christmas Village.  Have a listen to the whole album here:
    https://adamkennedy.bandcamp.com

Our Top Ten Christmas Movie Lists come from Ed Daley and Adam Parker from the Merry Britsmas Podcast.  Where will they feature on our leader board?

Then we have another Yule Log.  Why not spend an hour watching Joe Pesci get his scalp burned off with a flamethrower while crackling sounds and Christmas music play in the background.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1MUqV5mAVU

This episode's recommendation is for you to share the podcast.  It's actually Christmas now, so you won't seem like a weirdo when you tell your friends to listen to the show and it would mean a lot to me and the team (there is no team).

See, I told you it was a packed show.

    Merry Christmas

A Classic Storybook Brought to Life | How the Grinch Stole Christmas

A Classic Storybook Brought to Life | How the Grinch Stole Christmas

    INTRODUCTION

In today’s episode of Parallel Quest the guys start off by having a discussion of bedside manner. Is it better for a doctor or nurse to be completely silent during an exam or are a few words of assurance that “everything looks good” a little better? One thing leads to another and Zach ends up telling a story about a time that he had swollen lymph nodes or, according to his doctor, “possibly cancer.”

2020 has definitely been the year of strange things and the changing of traditions. Weddings have been one thing that have been quite different in 2020. With canceled and postponed weddings becoming rather popular, somehow, Cody still found himself officiating two of them under expedited circumstances. There is a possibility that his calling in life is to be a professional wedding officiant? Maybe. But more importantly, the guys discuss how people should really approach weddings in the midst of a global pandemic.

THE RANDOM DISCUSSION TOPIC OF THE WEEK: Zach and Cody agree on a lot of things but not always everything. A recent topic that they found themselves in disagreement over was “which storytelling medium has the largest market size.” Zach thinks that the literary fiction market is larger than that of films. Cody believes the opposite, thinking the the market for films is quite a bit larger than that of literary fiction. Listen in as the guys discuss and let us know what you think about it as well. Write into the show here (https://www.steellakestudio.com/community) to let the guys know what you think about the topic.

MAIN TOPIC: HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (2000 film) 01:00:30

How the Grinch Stole Christmas was a highly anticipated film for the guys in the year 2000, but it was not a movie that came to life in the easiest of ways. After a crazy agreement to attain the rights to Dr. Seuss’s work, the Grinch was released with a big name star (Jim Carrey) leading the performance and a successful director (Ron Howard) commanding the team that brought Dr. Seuss’s imagination to the live-action screen. The film received rather lukewarm reception by critics upon its release but has gone on to be a classic played around many television sets in the years to follow.

Even though the film wasn’t the best, it captured the imagination of Dr. Seuss’s world in a rather impressive way. The team that brought the film to life was full of talent from people who were formerly writers for Seinfeld to the greatest makeup artist in modern film, Rick Baker. This episode of Parallel Quest digs in to the talent that is, Rick Baker. Cody shares exactly how and why this is a household name in the Haggard house, even though most casual film viewers probably have no idea who he is.

There are many stories from the guys attached to this film that will allow you to laugh along and hopefully share your own as well.

Thank you so much for checking out Parallel Quest. This is a production of Steel Lake Studio. We don't just have one podcast though, we are a team of storytellers trying to use a variety of different mediums to tell stories that we have been working on our whole lives. Does It Hold Up: Trading Places

Does It Hold Up: Trading Places

Happy Wine Wednesday! We are back and introducing our special series, Does It Hold Up.  In this series, we will occasionally watch a classic film from the past and examine whether or not it still holds up today.  Up first, the 1983 hit Trading Places, starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd.  The film is undoubtedly funny and features a stellar cast, but also has its problems with  blackface and gratuitous use of offensive language that definitely wouldn't fly in 2020.

As always, we kick off with our drinking selections for the week.  We also raise our glasses and salute our lovely listeners in Los Angeles, California.  Thank you for your support.  Before getting into our topic of the week, we talk all things Animal Crossing.  Kristine has joined the game and she is hooked on the Nook!

Next, we get into the topic of the week - Trading Places.  We start with our overall reactions to the film and then unpack its problematic parts.  We also talk about the parts of the film that still ring true today, get into the Philadelphia of it all, and ponder what a modern version of the film might look like.  We then close out with our final verdict - is Trading Places timeless or is time up for the film?  Listen to find out where we landed.
