Episode 39: Vaughn Joy, Impressions of America Podcast, Historic Footnotes in the Every Day

Anne Marie talks to Impressions of America Podcast cohost Vaughn Joy about the historic footnotes found in the mundane every day life of people from the past.

Vaughn Joy is a PhD candidate at University College London and co-host of the Impressions of America podcast. Currently, she is studying early Cold War Christmas films and their reflections of and influences on American culture in the immediate post-war period of 1946 to 1961. Impressions of America is a podcast discussing wider subjects of culture, politics, and media that formed American life in the latter 20th century. Vaughn’s research has covered a wide array of topics and interests including demonology, comic book history, and theatrical adaptations of Greek myth before culminating in film history for her PhD.

Ep 12: Giving - Jingle All The Way & Gift Of The Magi

Ep 12: Giving - Jingle All The Way & Gift Of The Magi

In this episode of Parallel Fiction, Heather and Jeff spread some holiday cheer when they breakdown the act of Giving.  Presents are a big part of the holiday season, but there is so much more that goes in to getting it right.  The duo goes in depth with candid thoughts and opinions on the current on what makes a great gift and how to appreciate everything you have.

In a break from the norm, Heather reads the story The Gift of the Magi in its entirety to start.  Though this story is short, Heather explains how much thoughtfulness goes into the story of the two main characters Jim and Della.

Did you know?  The Gift of the Magi was allegedly written at Pete’s Tavern on Irving Place in New York City.

Jeff follows up with a quick summary of the 1996 film Jingle All The Way starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.  In this story, Jeff explains that sometimes a person’s time and attention is a much more meaningful gift than material items.  Jeff recalls seeing this film in theaters as a kid, and relates the movie’s fictional impossible-to-find-toy “Turboman” to the Power Ranger and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crazy of the 80’s & 90’s

Fun Fact! The Turboman toy was made for retail following the release of this movie.  A sealed figure can fetch up to $600 on eBay as of the publishing of this episode!

Following these reviews, Heather and Jeff dive into commonalities between the two works such as love, thoughtfulness, generosity, giving and receiveing, and what great gifts they’ve received in their lives.

Listen in to hear Jeff and Heather’s candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how The Gift of the Magi, and Jingle All The Way compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each with some interesting facts and opinions about Giving. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy and is looking for some holiday spirit!

Heather’s Rating of The Gift Of The Magi: Very Nice – A great story for the ages that tells the tale of true love through actions.

Jeff’s Rating of Jingle All The WayNice – A fun 90’s movie that is good to watch for the season, but not the standout Christmas comedy movie that Home Alone or National Lampoons Vacation are.

    Scrooged

    Scrooged

The Plotaholics holiday magic continues as Shane and Bryan pick apart the 1988 holiday classic, Scrooged starring Bill Murray, Dan A...wait. Wrong movie...Bill Murray, Harold Ram...WHOOPS!

Bill Murray, Alfre Woodard, Bobcat Goldthwait, and Karen Allen star in this modern-day retelling of the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol. Murray stars as Frank Kross, the youngest television network president in history, who has stepped on as many people as possible to get to the top and has become a heartless, cynical piece of crap.

It is then that Bob Marley and the Christmas Council get together and decide that they're going to scare Frank straight with physical assault and emotional manipulation in this hilariously loud, and charming comedy that reminds us all to put a little love in our hearts.

    25. Trapped in Paradise (1994)

    25. Trapped in Paradise (1994)

(A Ben, Tom and Petros episode - prepare for childish vulgarity and challenges of the absurd.)

"Trapped in Bullshit"  Was how John Lovitz described his time 'trapped' on set, making this festive fright!

Sorry, John, but what about us, the viewers who have had to sit through this steaming Yule Log!

To help remind us 'tis the season to be jolly', we were delighted to be joined by Petros, host of 'Caged In Podcast'. Not to be confused with another well-known and some would say more beloved podcast, 'In Caged'

But unfortunately, all the Christmas Cage in the world could not lift our Christmas spirit.

Also, go ahead and throw the turkey in the bin, as after witnessing Alvin (Dana Carvey nailing that squeaky pitch) gobbling his way through some giblet gravy, the only thing you'll want this Christmas is a new pair of eyes!

The holiday spread will never be the same.

Saint Nic and his dopey reindeer are here to ruin your Christmas.
