Having escaped execution and assumed an alias, Baron Frankenstein transplants his deformed underling’s brain into a perfect body, but the effectiveness of the process and the secret of his identity soon begin to unravel.

It’s Doc’s choice of films for this episode, so it should be no surprise the film chosen is the Hammer/Peter Cushing classic The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958). A rare event for Hammer, this feature is a direct sequel to its predecessor, The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), beginning with Victor Frankenstein escaping the guillotine. A dastardly chap, that Frankenstein. A new series of shenanigans begins as Frankenstein, now known as Doctor Stein, continues his experiments. A surprisingly serious take on the character and Shelley’s story follows Peter Cushing’s Doctor Frankenstein instead of Christopher Lee’s Monster. Check out what the Grue Crew shares about this fantastic early Hammer horror entry.

At the time of this writing, The Revenge of Frankenstein is available for streaming from multiple PPV sources. It is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray in the Hammer Films – Ultimate Collection, a 20-film set from Sony.

IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (1953) – Episode 155 – Decades Of Horror: The Classic Era

“Where are you? What do you look like? What am I supposed to be looking for? I know you are out there hiding in the desert. Maybe I’m looking right at you and don’t even see you. Come on out!” Doesn’t the song go, “Who are you? Who, who, who, who?” Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt, Daphne Monary-Ernsdorff, Doc Rotten, and Jeff Mohr – as they set their eyeballs with relish on Jack Arnold’s It Came From Outer Space (1953).

A spaceship from another world crashes in the Arizona desert and only an amateur stargazer and a schoolteacher suspect alien influence when the local townsfolk begin to act strangely.

This one’s got it all: groovy alien eyeball monster, body-snatching shenanigans, coming-at-ya 3-D fun, and… The Professor from Gilligan’s Island. What else do you need? A newlywed woman goes to the local shaman to get some help with her love life, but instead discovers she is a witch and can now shapeshift into a white reindeer vampire.

The Grue Crew explores the little-known, yet highly effective, 1952 Finnish horror classic, The White Reindeer. This film is worth seeking out for the cinematography alone. The horror and the “creatures” are Lewtonesque, more implied than shown, but without a doubt, the film includes witches, vampires, and changelings. Oh my! A must-see, The White Reindeer is a lost treasure that horror fans, especially horror historians, should re-discover. Check out what the Grue Crew has to share.

In the U.S., current streaming options for The White Reindeer are limited to YouTube and archive.org. The White Reindeer is available on physical media as a Eureka Entertainment Region 2 Blu-ray from the UK and as a Region A/B/C Import Blu-ray from Finland.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Daphne, is Il Demonio (1963). Ready for some Italian folk horror? The Classic Era Grue Crew is! You won’t want to miss this one!

When Claudia and her friends break the rules by trespassing into a forbidden tower, the school’s headmistress punishes them by confining them to the school during Spring Break. A similar incident happened five years before with horrendous, tragic consequences.

The Grue-Crew head to Mexico for the ninth time and encounter a restless spirit seeking revenge. Suspense and supernatural shenanigans ensue! The cult film in question is Even the Wind is Afraid (Hasta el viento tiene miedo) from writer/director Carlos Enrique Taboada, who is also the writer/director for another Classic Era episode, The Book of Stone (1969, El libro de piedra). The Classic Era Grue-Crew also recognized cast members from another of their episodes, Macario (1960). When Even the Wind is Afraid was released in 1968, it revitalized the Mexican horror genre. Be ready to settle in for a discussion with your faithful Gruesome Magazine spirit guides.

At the time of this writing, Even the Wind is Afraid is available to stream from Tubi and YouTube, and is available as a Blu-ray disc from VCI Video.

A scientist is nearly assassinated. In order to save him, a submarine is shrunken to microscopic size and injected into his bloodstream with a small crew. Problems arise almost as soon as they enter it.

Raquel Welch passed away on 15 February 2023, so the Classic Era Grue Crew thought a fitting tribute would be to cover one of her first breakout roles. Released a few weeks before One Million Years B.C. (1966), Fantastic Voyage features her as the only woman in a seven-member ensemble cast populated by excellent character actors, and she proves herself up to the task. The film’s crew is also the recipient of two Academy Awards with an additional three nominations. The Grue Crew goes a tiny bit giddy over this influential classic from the 60s. Check out what they have to say.

At the time of this writing, Fantastic Voyage is available to stream from most PPV sites, and as a very economical Blu-ray treatment from 20th Century Studios.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule is one chosen by Daphne, the BBC TV Live production of Nineteen Eighty-Four (1954), starring Pete Cushing, Yvonne Mitchell, Donald Pleasence, and André Morell!

The Creature is captured and turned into an air-breather by a rich mad scientist. This makes the Creature very unhappy, and he escapes, killing people and setting fires in the process.

To this day, all the Universal Monsters remain incredibly popular and beloved with The Gill-Man edging out the others as the fan favorite of many Monster fans. Released in 1954, The Creature from the Black Lagoon would introduce the amphibious “prehistoric beast” just as Abbott and Costello were breathing final life into Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll, and the Mummy. All three “Creature” films would be released within 3 years with the first two in 3D while the last did not receive the 3D treatment. The Classic Era Grue-Crew complete their coverage of the Gill-Man with this discussion and review of The Creature Walks Among Us (1956). (Don’t be alarmed when Jeff leaves for a while to get sandwiches.)

The Creature Walks Among Us is a strong finish to Universal’s trilogy of Gill-Man films. At the time of this writing, it is available to stream on The Roku Channel and on physical media as a Blu-ray in Creature From the Black Lagoon: Complete Legacy Collection and other Universal Monster collections.

Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Jeff, will be Stranger on the Third Floor (1940), considered by many to be the first film noir and starring Peter Lorre and Elisha Cook Jr. Is it horror? Well, it’s at least horror-adjacent.
