Episode 1: Deconstructing Fahrenheit 451
Hello everyone, and welcome to Books Undone. I'm your host, Livia J. Elliot, and today we will discuss one of my favourite books - "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury. In this episode, I will share my thoughts on what I believe lays beneath the book's face value of book burning and censorship, to discuss its underlying theme of simplification of reasoning.

Full disclosure: there are spoilers in this podcast, but more importantly, what you will hear is my subjective opinion of it. You are allowed and entitled to disagree and differ..

Ray Bradbury 1983 - writing, living and the power of imagination

Ray Bradbury 1983 - writing, living and the power of imagination

Ray Bradbury talks about his beginnings as a writer and his personal connection to two stories Dandelion Wine and Something Wicked This Way Comes then moves on to talk about converting his stories for the silver screen.  He goes into depth about what is involved when you convert one of your own stories into a movie and contrasts  with his work as screenwriter for the movie Moby Dick.
Having written and published scores of poems Bradbury talks about how poetry can pave the way for the compression of ideas and images a movie needs.  He then ends with the best advice for how young writers should navigate their career without breaking their spirit or their heart.

    Fahrenheit 451 (1966)

Is it about books or TV or censorship or ridiculous ideas? Mario Bernardi and Jimmy go back in time to talk about the movie based on a book they had to read in high school. While they don't reveal how they did when tested on it you get a pretty good idea based on their discussion. Surprisingly insightful.

Halloween is Ray Bradbury Night, with special guest Juno Jakob

Happy Halloween everyone! To help celebrate this spooky time of year, I'm joined today with author Juno Jakob. We both are devoted fans of Ray Bradbury, and we talk about him and his influence on our lives.

Juno has also written a new book for YA called The Halloween Book - it is going to be released on Halloween day, and it's perfect reading for the kids in your life. Perhaps this Halloween you could hand out copies of the book instead of candy... OR BOTH! (Both is probably better...)

In all seriousness, I enjoyed this discussion with Juno, and I hope you will too.

So as Ray Bradbury would say, Live Forever!

The Monsters are Due on Night-Light with Mark Dawidziak

MARK DAWIDZIAK returns to further our appreciation of Halloween. What is interesting to note from Mark's expanded edition of "Everything I Need to Know I Learned in the Twilight Zone" is that he was friends and had extensive interviews with stellar sci-fi/horror authors Ray Bradbury and Richard Matheson. What was the key to their success? We'll move into other authors to put us into the seasonal mood such as Poe and Dickens. We plan on discussing the often overlooked terrifying movie "Duel" and cover some of Matheson's magnificent contributions to "The Twilight Zone."

TMR 243 : The Illustrated Man

TMR 243 : The Illustrated Man
"Each person who tries to see beyond his own time must face questions to which there cannot yet be proven answers."—from The Illustrated Man For the fourth of our Movie Review podcasts here at TMR we welcome back our good friends Frank Johnson (of the Ancient Aliens Debunked blog) and Mark Campbell (of Bowler or Fez Film Reviews) for a roundtable discussion on the 1969 classic movie The Illustrated Man, starring Rod Steiger and Claire Bloom, based on Ray Bradbury's sci-fi short story collection of the same name. Taking just three of Bradbury's stories—"The Veldt", "The Long Rain" and "The Last Night of the World"—the film ties them together, as does the book, with the framing device of "The Illustrated Man", a vagrant ex-circus-freak-show-performer with a heavily tattooed body, whose "body illustrations"—created by an allegedly time-travelling woman—seem to possess a supernatural power to transfix anyone who stares at the images and transport them into "the future". But is this really about "the future", or is it something more like "possible worlds"? Are we looking at science fiction here, or is it closer to fanstasy? Indeed, does the film even know what it's doing? Join us as we ponder these questions and more, and compare the film with the original short stories—thanks to our resident Ray Bradbury enthusiast, Mark Campbell—in an entertaining and thought-provoking three-way discussion. EP4 Fahrenheit 451

    EP4 Fahrenheit 451

Three little words. A small question. Are you happy? A harmless question, right? Or is it an earthworm burrowing its way into your brain with a never-ending hunger for a compliant existence that you can’t even remember choosing?

Fahrenheit 451, the classic science fiction dystopian novel by Ray Bradbury, is the story of Guy Montag, a fireman tasked to burn books, and thus critical thinking, decides to fight back.

In this month’s episodes we will examine change as an epic force in the lives of Guy Montag from Fahrenheit 451 and Count Alexander Rostov from A Gentleman in Moscow, two very different male protagonists, one very timeless struggle.
