    This week, we're going back to the Sengoku period to explore how The Hidden Fortress influenced Star Wars!

    We start this week's episode by going back to the beginnings of George Lucas' love affair with Akira Kurosawa (01:37), and explaining what Kurosawa was motivated by when he made The Hidden Fortress (02:39).

    Then we break down the specific ways The Hidden Fortress helped to shape Star Wars, from the influence of Tahei and Matashichi on C-3PO and R2-D2 (06:00), to the influence of General Rokurota Makabe and General Hyoe Tadokoro on Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader (11:29), and the influence of Princess Yuki on Princess Leia, Padme Amidala and Rey (20:45)!

    Finally, we take a look at the early Star Wars treatments that bore a much closer resemblance to The Hidden Fortress (26:52), and the influences Akira Kurosawa drew on himself when he made The Hidden Fortress (31:19)!

    Screen icon Alan Ladd produces and stars in Hell on Frisco Bay (1955). This crime spectacle, shot on location in noir central - San Francisco appears for the first time on both Blu-ray and DVD. Director Jerry Schatzberg's masterclass in empathetic acting from two very different, but equally dynamic, acting titans, Scarecrow (1973) starring Gene Hackman and Al Pacino, comes to Blu-ray. Rachel Ward makes her "scream" debut in the early eighties slasher, Night School (1981). Directed by Ken Hughes (Casino Royale and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) comes to Blu-ray red with blood. On DVD, The Jamie Foxx Show: The Complete Fourth Season (1999-2000) sees the young staff of The King's Towers enter into a new maturity while its proprietors begin to make plans to step aside. This week we have two triple feature DVD Collections featuring classic WB character actors. Glenda Farrell Triple Feature includes the films, The Law in her Hands (1936), Here Comes Carter (1936) and Dance Charlie Dance (1937) while the Guy Kibbee Triple Feature includes Mary Jane's Pa (1935), Going Highbrow (1935) and The Big Noise (1936).

    New to Blu-Ray - Jason Robards serves up a career defining performance in slo-mo action deconstructionist Sam Peckinpah's western, The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970). 70s star Michael Sarrazin says "Gumball" into the phone unleashing a cross-country no-holds-bared race across america in The Gumball Rally (1976). New TV on DVD includes the Hondo: The Complete Series (1967) based on the character created by Louis L'Amour and the John Wayne film, features the adventures of former cavalry scout Hondo Lane (Ralph Taeger) and his dog Sam (himself). Newsreaders: The Complete Second Season (2014-15) comes from the creative team behind the irreverent, Emmy-winning comedy Childrens Hospital. Musicals Back in Print on DVD include Romance on the High Seas (1948), It's a Great Feeling (1949), My Dream is Yours (1949), Summer Stock (1950), Young Man with a Horn (1950), Annie Get Your Gun (1950), Les Girls (1957) and Bells are Ringing (1960) - which is also newly available on Blu-ray. As a bonus we brought two John Waters cult classics back to DVD including Pink Flamingos (1972) and Desperate Living (1977)

    After wishing ourselves a Happy 8th Birthday, we tackle the latest releases on disc. First up, Batman Brave and the Bold Season 3 (2011) finally comes to Blu-ray looking bolder than ever. Next up, from the creative team behind the irreverent, award-winning comedy Childrens Hospital comes Newsreaders Season 1 (2013) on DVD - the series explores the vital issues that actually don't affect us every day. Take your front-row seats to the best variety show of rarities from the Jazz Age, as the vaunted and venerable Vitaphone sound shorts present a third DVD collection of vintage Vaudeville and more with Vitaphone Varieties Volume 3 (1928-29). The Girl and the General (1967) is a haunting Italian neorealist dramedy about an Italian private, Umberto Orsini, who captures an Austrian general, Rod Steiger. Then we wrap the podcast up with a Flashback discussion of the 2010 release of the must-see oddball classic, Gabriel Over the White House (1933) starring Walter Huston and Franchot Tone.

    Two sci-fi classics come to Blu-Ray! It's cowboys versus dinosaurs as FX man extraordinaire Ray Harryhausen animates The Valley of Gwangi (1969). Julie Christie takes on the sentient (and lusty) computer in her basement in Demon Seed (1977). Warner Bros. Animation's The Zeta Project is a spin-off series based on the character Zeta from Batman Beyond. Season One (2001) is now back in print and we're proud to be releasing the long-awaited Season Two (2002) new to DVD. Finally we chat about two classics starring Lee Tracy that are new to DVD including Wanted! Jane Turner (1936) and Millionaires in Prison (1940).

Next we review several incredible films finally Back in Print on DVD including Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell in Macao (1952), Rock Hudson and Sidney Poitier in Something of Value (1957), John Ford directing the great Woody Strode in Sergeant Rutledge (1960) along with Mitchum and George Kennedy in The Good Guys and the Bad Guys (1969). To wrap up the year we bring back three of our most requested sets, Forbidden Hollywood Volumes 1-3 which collectively feature Waterloo Bridge (1931), Baby Face, Red-Headed Woman, The Divorcee, A Free Soul, Night Nurse, Three on a Match, Female, Other Men's Women, The Purchase Price, Frisco Jenny, Midnight Mary, Heroes for Sale and Wild Boys of the Road. Then we go over a bunch of studio classics new to DVD including the musicals About Face (1952) and Stop, You're Killing Me (1952). Natalie Wood gets her first grown-up role in A Cry in the Night (1956) with a thoroughly chilling Raymond Burr. Then we travel to the darkest Amazon with the historical travelogue Manhunt in the Jungle (1958). George Hamilton stars as Broadway legend Moss Hart in Act One (1963). Finally we chat about the ground-breaking musical Stop the World I want to Get Off (1966).

    Hi! This is George, Matt and DW from Warner Archive - how's it goin', eh? Our topic today is Hollywood and we'll be discussing Bob and Doug McKenzie's epic film, Strange Brew (1983) starring Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas now out on blu-ray - mouse in a bottle not included, eh!. Our second topic today is TV Classics like Young Maverick (1979-80) - he's in the wild west, and the fifth and final season of Dr. Kildare (1965-66) starring Richard Chamberlin - this one's in color, eh! Then we move on to classic films like Woman in White (1949) and Lizzie (1957) with the lovely Eleanor Parker. She's a beauty, no? And then it's time for the RKO Varieties Triple Feature with three different hour long films that bridge the gap between radio, film and TV with hosts Gil Lamb and Jack Parr with acts like Edgar Kennedy, Anne Shirley, Red Buttons and Liberace. That guy can really play the piano! Lastly we got three Hong Kong films from Golden Harvest including A Terra-cotta Warrior (1989) - about an ancient Chinese guy who becomes a statue for like 3000 years, He's a Woman, She's a Man (1994) - because that's what happens, eh - and Hark Tsui's The Blade (1995) about a one-armed swordsman with a killer sword. And that's our podcast for today, so good day!

Western's final season starring Ty Hardin and the debut of LAWMAN: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON (1958-59) with John Russell. Next we board the "T" to spend some time with Spenser and Hawk in SPENSER: FOR HIRE, THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON (1986-87) with Robert Urich and Avery Brooks.
