130: THE WOLF MAN starring Lon Chaney Jr. (1941)
Ian and Matthew close out Halloween 2023 with another Universal monster movie: the psychological mystery of THE WOLF MAN. But they can't help themselves from also arguing some more about THE INVISIBLE MAN, and whether any Universal monster movies really have a hero at all. Except for Van Helsing in DRACULA. Professor Van Helsing remains awesome.

Mark will always have overanalysis as he tries to figure out what makes Casablanca the definitive classic, why its final act twist feels so satisfying, and how any woman would be more interested in Rick than in the incredible Victor Laszlo.

    Casablanca

    Casablanca
This may be the beginning of a beautiful podcast... We open up this week's podcast with some thoughts and observations on the NFL Wild Card Weekend before diving into a Blue Plate Special filled with WWII pictures The Longest Day (1962) and Kelly's Heroes (1970). Upon finally ducking into the exotic saloon known as Rick's Cafe, we discuss what exactly about Casablanca makes it among the most legendary creations in the history of cinema, why the movie's aged over the past eighty years like the finest of wines, how it fits into the evolution of Humphrey Bogart's iconic star persona, and delight in the deliciously arch performances of Claude Rains and Conrad Veidt (#FindOne hive unite). The Invisible Man

    The Invisible Man
For our third episode, we decided to go full incognito (#fiendmode) with an audio commentary of The Invisible Man, James Whale's 1933 addition to the Universal Monsters movie canon. We explore Levi's love and passion for the studio's influential slate of horror films, take delight in the talkie debut of the great Claude Rains, and parse the relative worth of driving yourself and those around you mad thanks to your seemingly useless invisibility potion. (Dude was born to be a Twitter reply guy/thought leader, Lamborghini lurkin' in the shadows, but alas...) Feel free to skip to 49:17 for the beginning of our audio commentary. The Adventures of Robin Hood

    The Adventures of Robin Hood

We're in like Flynn on this week's episode of the Force Material podcast, as we explore how The Adventures of Robin Hood has influenced Star Wars!

With yet another telling of the Robin Hood legend in theatres, we decided to venture into Sherwood Forest to revisit the classic 1938 version, starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Claude Rains and Basil Rathbone!

First up, we talk about all the Star Wars news that's gone down since our last episode, including Mark Hamill's wild Boba Fett theory (01:25), the announcement of the Cassian Andor TV series (04:49), the casting of Pedro Pascal in The Mandalorian (08:39), and the latest Galaxy's Edge developments (10:21)!

Then it's onto our feature presentation (16:35), as George Lucas discusses the influence of Errol Flynn's swashbuckling films on Star Wars (32:51), and we explore the influence of The Adventures of Robin Hood on Ben Burtt (36:41) and the influence of Olivia de Havilland's Maid Marion on Princess Leia (38:07).

We look at the truth behind the Robin Hood legend (45:43), the time Errol Flynn fought Count Dooku (52:16), the immense influence of composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold on John Williams (53:43), the link between Errol Flynn and Darth Vader (57:37) and the time Star Wars literally became Robin Hood - in miniature (01:00:12).

Finally, we take a brief look at Disney's live-action Robin Hood movie, directed by a man with a very interesting name (01:03:01), and we ask the question - does the world need yet another Robin Hood movie (01:10:11)?
