Episode 243: Ride or Die Week: 'Scream Park' (2013)/'Spooktacular!'(2023)

Akela Cooper has become a low key regular on our humble little podcast. We raved about M3gan earlier this year and covered Hell Fest previously. We talk about her latest project which covers one of horror’s most popular tropes. Earlier this year, we were shocked to hear that Glen Danzig would be making an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. He recently showed up at Fantastic Fest and made waves at a screening of V/H/S/85.

Nothing says Halloween like a good old fashioned haunted amusement park. (Not an amusement park that is literally haunted, but one that is horror themed, though the former is also really cool.) Scream Park from 2013 is a goofy idea that has promise for a fun horror movie. A scary park is having financial woes, so the owner decides to stage a series of murders to drum up interest.

It may not be the best way to get people to pay for your rides, but it works for an indie horror movie. And it was clearly made with love as it has horror vibes from the 1970s and 80s. But there are a lot of issues. From bad pacing to its poor treatment of its female characters - including a kill that is funny and gross for all the wrong reasons -, the film will constantly frustrate audiences.

Spooktacular! Will also bother those who watch, but in a different way. Again, it is a great idea; the documentary looks at the rise, fall, and lasting impact of Spooky World, the first haunted amusement park. There is lots of great archival footage and the whole thing is filled with a sense of nostalgia. But it also comes with a lot of filler. Constant clips of Vincent Price movies and incomplete tangents take away from the overall feeling.  There is a lot to like here, but was it enough?

Episode 140: 31 Days of Horror: 'Haunt'

Episode 140: 31 Days of Horror: 'Haunt'

Before we head out to the Sun City Fright Fest, we had some things to get off our chests. It's the spooky season and we had to talk about the plans we have for the month. This year, we have some choices that go against our previous plans. Plus, we talk about what Stephen King movies to watch in October and notice something about miniseries remakes. It also seemed like the perfect time to talk about Haunt.

Watching as many horror movies as possible is a staple of October. We talk about some of our favorites that we watch every year. We also discuss how streaming as provided slightly different options for 31 Days of Halloween. Anyone in the mood for Squid Games? Or is the gruesome and nonsensical violence of Slasher: Flesh & Blood  more your speed? There is a lot more than movies to check of your scary bucket list.

For many, a big part of Halloween is going to extreme haunted houses. Haunt is a Shudder exclusive about a group of friends that go to one and end up with more than they bargained for. Yes, it is a slasher, but why does it feel so different? The pacing and tone are unique, while the characters are familiar. The ending is something else entirely. We go over the good, the bad, and the terrifying.

Episode 139: 'After Blue'/'The Sadness' with Not Your Final Girl

Episode 139: 'After Blue'/'The Sadness' with Not Your Final Girl

This week I am joined by Ariel and Candace from the Not Your Final Girl podcast. We talk about two movies that seem to be nothing alike but still have a lot in common. 'After Blue' is a surreal science fiction western that has a unique look, great soundtrack, and a character named Kate Bush. 'The Sadness' is an homage to Hong Kong Category III movies. It sounds like a zombie movie that is also taking on the pandemic. While it never reaches deep levels of commentary it is an extreme horror movie that will stay with you. But is that a good thing?

It is already the spooky time of year and we talk about what plans we have for October. Can you believe one of the horror hosts has never been to a haunted house? Is it possible that one of them does not treat Halloween any different from any other time of the year? And what is WWE's Undertaker doing that has us all excited?

After Blue (Dirty Paradise) is one of the most unique looking movies of the year. The story is about a girl named Toxic who frees a woman named Kate Bush. This leads to a quest that pushes the boundaries of imagination. We talk about paintings on the sides of vans, designer guns, and the movies treatment of sex.

*WARNING! THE SADNESS DEALS WITH SEXUAL VIOLENCE*

The Sadness is one of the wildest movies we have ever talked about on this show. The film is an absolute gorefest filled with sexual violence, graphic killings, and no plot. In other words, it is a textbook extreme horror movie. We discuss its plot and characters, its frank handling of violence, and its place in today's pandemic world.

Blake and Nathaniel end 31 Days of Halloween with a talk about Killer Animal movies. There is talk about the famous ones like Jaws and Cujo, the overlooked ones like Piranha plus ones like whatever Night of the Lepus is. Plus, talk about Michael Bay's new Covid movie.

The two also talk about Bay's new movie Songbird. The movie is set four years in the future in which Covid-23 still haunts America.

Episode 90: Cryptids, creeps, and crazies

Episode 90: Cryptids, creeps, and crazies

In the most Halloweeny episode of the year, computer problems abound. Blake and Nathaniel are joined by AIPT Science Editor Russ Dobbler and MonsterTalk host Blake Smith to talk about their favorite Halloween monsters.

The show starts with a talk about Jared Leto's return as Joker. The four discuss if this is enough to get them to watch the Snyder Cut of Justice League. They also talk about even more delays and the impending end of the Fast & Furious franchise.

On this week's What You Need to Know, the guys talk about horror tropes. Are audiences more forgiving of them or are they just the most known?

This week's main segment is about Halloween monsters. Talks of Dogmen, Mothman, and batsquatch are all thrown about. But how does a woodpecker fit into it all?
