Join me for this, an update on the media involving + important work being done around the shipwreck of the Clotilda, which I featured in an Unsinkable side series episode this past spring. In this episode I speak with Mike Foster, whose ancestor William Foster captained (and burned) the slave ship. Mike has become a vocal advocate for Africatown and the legacy of the Clotilda; he speaks candidly with me about his relationship to descendants, his own emotional journey in becoming part of this story, and the ways in which Africatown is looking to the future. I am so grateful he gave me this time.

Mike's bio: Mike Foster was born in California in 1947, and raised there. He went into the United States Air Force in 1965 and served over 21 years. He has lived in ten states and four foreign countries, including England and Italy. He has kissed the Blarney Stone, been to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, and served as a noncombatant tour in Vietnam.  He is a published poet, and enjoys working on his family genealogy. He is married, a father and grandfather, and lives in Montana.

Juliet sits down with Clotilda Demauro of the well-known YouTube show, The Introvert Room. She is a "visual and performative storyteller," and at the young age of 23, Clotilda has a wealth of experience and a knowledge far beyond her years. Clotilda is an intelligent, perceptive, and confident woman who drops truth bombs on Juliet and the BrokenGirl Unchained audience. Tune in for this interview with this amazingly talented woman. 

The Last Slave Ship, known as the Clotilda, is a mysterious story that can’t be told in a hurry. As a matter of fact, it’s taken 159 years to be told and is still not finished.

It started with simple people living simple lives in their ‘own’ African country, before being captured by a rival tribe, sold to a wealthy slave owner from America and forced to live in squalor on a two-month voyage across an unforgiving Atlantic Ocean.

And despite a then 50-year-old federal law against importing Africans, Clotilda and its cargo of 110 ‘human beings’ still dropped anchor at Mobile Bay on July 9, 1860…capping a gut-wrenching two-month plus voyage for those terrified captives. The Clotilda was burned and sunk in an Alabama River after bringing these slaves across the Atlantic in 1860. Two years ago, its remains were found. We had the honor of speaking with two descendants of slaves that were on that ship, as well as the captain’s descendent who brought the slaves from Africa to Alabama. Darron Patterson is the descendent of the slave, Polle Allen, and Gary Lumbers is the descendent of the slave, Cudjo Lewis. Mike Foster is the descendent of Captain William Foster who built and sailed the ship. The three of them have come together in an unlikely friendship to make sure the story of the Clotilda, and the legacy of the 110 slaves on board, lives on forever.
