SHOW NOTES:
Topic 1 - Welcome to the show. I’ve been listening to your show, Software Defined Talk, for quite a while. Tell us about your show, your co-hosts and the types of things you discuss on the show?
Topic 2 - What are some of the biggest trends you’ve seen (or been discussing) so far in 2019? Anything really surprise you?
- Big IPOs in 2019 - AirBnB, Uber, Lyft, Pinterest, WeWork, Zoom, etc. - the GigEconomy
- The rise of Kubernetes, the decline of Cloud Foundry
- OSS licensing wars
- VMware seems to be acquiring a new company every week
- VMware + Heptio + Pivotal + Bitnami= ?
- VMware now has a managed offering in AWS, Azure, IBM Cloud, GCP, Alibaba
Topic 3 - AWS has continued to be the leading public cloud for a decade now. Do you see anything slowing AWS down?
Topic 4 - There were lots of articles earlier in the year about big public cloud contracts between web companies and the public cloud (hundreds of millions in cloud spending). Many of those companies are now struggling as they have gone IPO. If they struggle to make revenue (and subsequently their cloud payments), do you see this having any effect on sentiment about public cloud?
Topic 5 - There is starting to be some noise in the news and the markets about a potential economic slowdown. How much do you think about what that might mean to the tech industry, and subsequently buyers and users of tech? Sometimes in slower times, we see the creativity of new tech emerge (2001 - mass websites; 2007/8 - AWS and iPhone, 2019/2020 - ??)

- Topic 1 - Welcome to the show. You’ve been at Chef for a couple years now, and previously at Docker (and several other emerging tech companies). Can you give us some perspective on where you see the market today in this time of rapid transitions?
- Topic 2 - We both come from a technical background and found ourselves customer facing and eventually on the business and marketing side. How has that transition been and what motivated you to make the change?
- Topic 3 - About a year ago, Chef introduced Habitat, which was a fairly large “re-think” from the previous Chef platforms, which was more focused on SysAdmin / Ops teams. Give you give the audience an overview on Habitat, for anyone that’s not familiar with the basic concepts?
- Topic 4 - Sometimes people will say that the existing Config Management tools are no longer needed now that we have containers, since they describe everything within their tools / files. How might you respond to those types of arguments?
- Topic 5 - A few weeks ago Chef introduced Habitat Builder. How does this differ from Habitat?
- Topic 6 - We see that Habitat is now supporting integration with platforms like Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes. How are you seeing the uptake of those platforms in the market, or what’s driving their adoption?
- Topic 7 - As you’re engaging with more companies that are building Cloud Native applications, what are some of the things they do that make them successful with these new apps, new operational models, new types of IT cultures?

- Topic 1 - It’s Year 2 of KubeCon. Momentum in the Kubernetes community has been growing really quickly. Give us the update on the event. Who are some of the companies that will be speaking about their experiences with Kubernetes?
- Topic 2 - We first met about a year and a half ago, before Kismatic (your previous company) went public. Back then it was lots of Kubernetes POCs, but now it seems like more and more Kubernetes in production. How are you seeing the market evolve and what’s driving it?
- Topic 3 - Companies have a lot of choices about how to manage containers these days - Kubernetes, Swarm, Mesos, DIY approaches, etc. What are you hearing about why companies are choosing Kubernetes?
- Topic 4 - No architecture is without faults or issues. What challenges do you still see for Kubernetes adopters, or the top priorities for the Kubernetes community?
- Topic 5 - Where are you seeing opportunities to interact with the Kubernetes community (for ISVs, Cloud Providers, Emerging Technology areas, etc.)?

- Topic 1 - Welcome to the show. Give us some of the background on Iron.io and how we’ve gotten from the start to where this serverless movement is going these days.
- Topic 2 - As the serverless movement has started to gain momentum, we’ve been seeing Iron.io mentioned in more and more partnership announcements with platform companies (Docker, Red Hat OpenShift, Cloud Foundry, etc.). Gives us the basics of the Iron.io technologies - How does it augment these platforms?
- Topic 3 - There seem to be lots of events-driven platforms / frameworks emerging. What are the core elements that developers and operators should be considering?
- Topic 4 - Iron.io has been doing this for quite a while. What are some of the application and design patterns that customers use the Iron.io platform to accomplish?
- Topic 5 - What are some of the business challenges that are solved with these events-driven architectures? How do you have a business-level conversation around “serverless”?
- Topic 6 - Where are the open source elements of Iron.io and which parts are commercial?
