Web Development Frameworks: Elixir and Phoenix vs. Ruby on Rails with Owen Bickford & Dan Ivovich

Web Development Frameworks: Elixir and Phoenix vs. Ruby on Rails with Owen Bickford & Dan Ivovich
On today’s episode, Elixir Wizards Owen Bickford and Dan Ivovich compare notes on building web applications with Elixir and the Phoenix Framework versus Ruby on Rails. They discuss the history of both frameworks, key differences in architecture and approach, and deciding which programming language to use when starting a project. Both Phoenix and Rails are robust frameworks that enable developers to build high-quality web apps—Phoenix leverages functional programming in Elixir and Erlang’s networking for real-time communication. Rails follows object-oriented principles and has a vast ecosystem of plug-ins. For data-heavy CRUD apps, Phoenix's immutable data pipelines provide some advantages. Developers can build great web apps with either Phoenix or Rails. Phoenix may have a slight edge for new projects based on its functional approach, built-in real-time features like LiveView, and ability to scale efficiently. But, choosing the right tech stack depends heavily on the app's specific requirements and the team's existing skills. Topics discussed in this episode: History and evolution of Phoenix Framework and Ruby on Rails Default project structure and code organization preferences in each framework Comparing object-oriented vs functional programming paradigms CRUD app development and interaction with databases Live reloading capabilities in Phoenix LiveView vs Rails Turbolinks Leveraging WebSockets for real-time UI updates Testing frameworks like RSpec, Cucumber, Wallaby, and Capybara Dependency management and size of standard libraries Scalability and distribution across nodes Readability and approachability of object-oriented code Immutability and data pipelines in functional programming Types, specs, and static analysis with Dialyzer Monkey patching in Ruby vs extensible core language in Elixir Factors to consider when choosing between frameworks Experience training new developers on Phoenix and Rails Community influences on coding styles Real-world project examples and refactoring approaches Deployment and dev ops differences Popularity and adoption curves of both frameworks Ongoing research into improving Phoenix and Rails Links Mentioned in this Episode: SmartLogic.io (https://smartlogic.io/) Dan’s LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/divovich/) Owen’s LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/owen-bickford-8b6b1523a/) Ruby https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/ Rails https://rubyonrails.org/ Sams Teach Yourself Ruby in 21 Days (https://www.overdrive.com/media/56304/sams-teach-yourself-ruby-in-21-days) Learn Ruby in 7 Days (https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/learn-ruby-in-7-days---color-print---ruby-tutorial-for-guaranteed-quick-learning-ruby-guide-with-many-practical-examples-this-ruby-programming-book--to-build-real-life-software-projects/18539364/#edition=19727339&idiq=25678249) Build Your Own Ruby on Rails Web Applications (https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/build-your-own-ruby-on-rails-web-applications_patrick-lenz/725256/item/2315989/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=low_vol_backlist_standard_shopping_customer_acquisition&utm_adgroup=&utm_term=&utm_content=593118743925&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA1MCrBhAoEiwAC2d64aQyFawuU3znN0VFgGyjR0I-0vrXlseIvht0QPOqx4DjKjdpgjCMZhoC6PcQAvD_BwE#idiq=2315989&edition=3380836) Django https://github.com/django Sidekiq https://github.com/sidekiq Kafka https://kafka.apache.org/ Phoenix Framework https://www.phoenixframework.org/ Phoenix LiveView https://hexdocs.pm/phoenixliveview/Phoenix.LiveView.html#content Flask https://flask.palletsprojects.com/en/3.0.x/ WebSockets API https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/WebSockets_API WebSocket connection for Phoenix https://github.com/phoenixframework/websock Morph Dom https://github.com/patrick-steele-idem/morphdom Turbolinks https://github.com/turbolinks Ecto https://github.com/elixir-ecto Capybara Testing Framework https://teamcapybara.github.io/capybara/ Wallaby Testing Framework https://wallabyjs.com/ Cucumber Testing Framework https://cucumber.io/ RSpec https://rspec.info/

Topic 1 - Welcome back to the show. We’ve spoken a few times over the years. First at cloud.com, then at Rancher. For those that aren’t familiar, give everyone a quick background.

Topic 2 - This core team has been working together for over ten years and have been through 3 startups now. What makes you want to do it again?

Topic 3 - Let’s talk Acorn Labs, what is the problem you’re trying to solve in the market? Explain to everyone the concept of an application development framework.

Topic 4 - Anything new going on? Announcement of Acorn running in AWS

    Topic 5 -
You use terms like Acorns, Acornfiles, Acorn services, and even nested acorns. Can you explain the architecture design and how it all connects together? What all are you packaging up (Docker images, configuration files, etc.) What are the advantages to this?

Topic 6 - Can Acorn be considered a runtime abstraction layer?

Topic 7 - This is sort of like a PaaS, or PaaS-like. None of the cloud providers have a service like this on top of their Kubernetes services. What do you know that they don’t

Topic 8 - How do you balance the specificity of individual cloud service but at the same time present a common interface/layer to developers?

073 - From Rails to revenue, with Khash Sajadi (CEO & Co-founder @ Cloud 66)
With our special guest, Khash Sajadi, the founder and CEO of Cloud 66, we're unlocking the story of a technology that transformed the world of software deployment. Imagine a world where developers are freed from the drudgery of repetitive tasks. Cloud 66 began as a solution to that exact problem, and Khash takes us on a journey from the early days of the company, through the evolution of its technology stack, to its present success.

We embrace the nitty-gritty details of technology, discussing everything from the revival of Rails-based startups to the pros and cons of microservices and monoliths. What are the implications of measuring technical debt as a key performance indicator? How does the availability of talent influence our choices in technology? Khash provides intriguing insights into these questions and more. Not just that, we delve into the emergence of Go as a popular programming language and the impact of containerization and Kubernetes on the industry.

But it's not all tech-specs and jargon. Khash regales us with the humorous story of how a small mistake led to him winning the 'Donkey of the Week' award at his company. To top it off, we tackle the often overlooked complexities of pricing for software-as-a-service (SaaS) companies, underscoring the importance of predictability and feature distinction. So, buckle up for a roller coaster ride through the highs and lows, the successes and mistakes, the serious and the fun facets of the software industry.

Front End as a Service (FEaaS) in a Composable Technology Stack

Front End as a Service (FEaaS) in a Composable Technology Stack

There are many different types of businesses and products that are a service. You likely have heard of Software as a Service (SaaS) or Platform as a Service (PaaS).

But from the growth of composable and headless architecture, a new As-A-Service has been created - Front End as a Service (FEaaS). Since the front end is decoupled from the back end, this type of service allows developers to focus on the ways people interact with their sites and apps without constraints or blockers from the back end systems.

Joining this episode are Rachael Hibbert and Pierre Martin from Front-Commerce, where they discuss this emerging FEaaS space. They will explain many details on how to use this technology to build, test, and distribute engaging front end experiences faster, better, and cost-effectively.

Topic 1 - Welcome back to the show. You are a rockstar in the developer world, and maybe unknown in the infrastructure world. Tell us a little bit about your background.

Topic 2 - [Developers as a Whole]  In 2023, do you think about developers any differently than you did in 2018 or 2021? Do you think about developers in terms of things they get done, or the types of work they do (front-end, back-end, mobile, data-science, etc.), or something else?

Topic 3 - [Trends] What are the big developer-centric trends that you are tracking or really have your interest? AI? Hosting services? Database services? WASM?

Topic 4 - [Platforms]  Will we ever find that PaaS pot-of-golf at the end of the rainbow, or is the dream of platforms just a unicorn? Or do we have to realize that successful platforms are all micro-platforms?

Topic 5 - [Languages] Redmonk famously tracks development languages every six months. It feels like there are only two trends - what stays the same, and the language that is the new hotness. Do languages really matter?

Topic 6 - [Culture] Lots of people talk about changing a company’s culture to better serve the needs of developers. Do you have any examples of where that has worked, or best practices?

Summit NA Preview, and a Simple Guide to Picking a Cloud Vendor Sadin on Digital

    The Big Themes:

    • Summit NA: Community Summit North America, the largest independent gathering of the Microsoft business applications ecosystem, is taking place October 10 through 13th in Orlando, Florida, featuring 500+ sessions and 300+ speakers.
    • How to compare cloud vendors: They have different revenue streams, distinct customer bases, and come in a wide range of sizes, but cloud vendors can best be understood in three dimensions, Wayne says: their layers, their origins, and their coverage.
    • Advice for the cloud buyer: Know what you're buying. Know when you're buying it. Know why you're buying it. And take full advantage of what you bought.

The Big Quote: "Remember, digital transformation is driven by technology in two ways: what I can do with my technology, or what somebody else can do with their technology against me. That's what drives the digital transformation. And the cloud products are perfect for that."

Episode 11: How a Technology Revolution Could Impact Payment Providers
We’re thrilled to welcome guest Rahul Gupta to this month’s podcast! Having worked in financial tech, banking and payments spaces since the 90s, Rahul brings a wealth of information and insight to the table — and has many thoughts on what card lenders should expect in the coming decade. In this episode, Craig asks Rahul how new developments in the payments space could impact card lenders — which leads to the group discussing whether Payment-as-a-Service (PaaS) might become an expansion of card wholesale for vertical-based lenders. Rahul alludes to a technology revolution in which all industries eventually offer embedded payments options — from ecommerce to healthcare to B2B. Then, Josh asks Rahul how technology stacks and services will change for financial institutions (FIs) over the next 5–10 years, and Rahul weighs in on questions around specialization regional banks and credit unions should be asking themselves. Plus, Josh quizzes Rahul on California-related trivia, and Rahul offers advice to those still in the first half of their careers. — For questions or to suggest an episode topic, please email ExtraCredit@transunion.com. Growing startups through revenue-based funding, with Arc Co-founder Nick Lombardo

Growing startups through revenue-based funding, with Arc Co-founder Nick Lombardo
In this conversation, we chat with Nick Lombardo, co-founder of Arc Technologies. Nick previously worked in private equity in New York where he experienced firsthand the limitations of traditional capital raising. In 2021, Nick and the other co-founders of Arc teamed up with Y Combinator and met with hundreds of software founders in the SF Bay Area and realized that they all shared a common pain point – startup funding is costly and distracting. Arc was founded to give founders an alternative to the status quo that helps them grow – with technology and without dilution. More specifically, we touch on investment banking vs. private equity, capital raising and the purpose of finance for early stage startups, invoice financing/invoice factoring vs revenue-based funding, embedded finance, and so so much more!Disclaimer here — this newsletter does not provide investment advice and represents solely the views and opinions of FINTECH BLUEPRINT LTD.
