142 Is Striving for Perfection a Good Thing in Gymnastics?

In episode 142 of Demystifying Mental Toughness, Dr Alessia Bruno and David discuss perfectionism in gymnastics as well as across other sports and walks of life. We go on to look at healthy perfectionism, as well as the downsides to the trait where we share some advice for gymnasts, athletes in general, coaches and parents.

    Key Learning Points

    • Gymnasts are judged on their performances which can go on to impact their self-esteem.
    • The intensity of their lives can mean some gymnasts run the risk of burnout.
    • Characteristics of rigidity and control can lead people to be more vulnerable to other people's judgments.
    • Perfectionist traits can suck the fun out of sport.
    • Social approval can be a big problem for some athletes where they spend a lot of time worrying about what others think.
    • Striving for perfection can lead to excessive self-criticism.

Helping Parents & Coaches Navigate Competitive Gymnastics Together

Helping Parents & Coaches Navigate Competitive Gymnastics Together

Today on the podcast is my good friend and crowd favorite Eva Shute Director of Gymnastics Operations who provides awesome information to help parents wrap their heads around competitive gymnastics.

We share ideas and things we have done in our gym that have been extremely successful to help build better parent communication relationships and when someone's really having a tough time or there may be a nightmare parent or coach, we explain what have we done practically to successfully fix these things.

I really believe that this parent episode is super important to get better long-term outcomes for everyone's happiness the coaches, the parents, and most importantly the gymnasts.

We DISCUSS; how to navigate the culture and the craziness that is competitive gymnastics.

My daughter is 5 years old why does she need to compete?

The time commitment, what can parents expect?

Why moving up gymnastics levels is not like moving up a grade in school.

Three do's and don'ts of meet etiquette.

The difference between optional and compulsory levels.

    And…

How puberty affects gymnasts in their optional years of training and competing and what parents can do to help support.

Training Hours in Young Gymnasts, Coach/Parent Boundaries, and Training High Level Gymnasts Safely with Lindsey Stancil

Training Hours in Young Gymnasts, Coach/Parent Boundaries, and Training High Level Gymnasts Safely with Lindsey Stancil

Today on the podcast, I'm very excited to be joined by Lindsey Stancil, a high-level coach in the Pennsylvania area. She's been professional and grateful enough to share some alternative points of view on some pretty controversial and complex topics. Being a higher level coach she has a different perspective to me, a middle-level coach, and medical provider. Lindsey points out there are great coaches out there who are doing an awesome job but are being asked to perform 17 different roles. They're trying to be strength coaches, physiologists, managing recovery, and nutrition.

We DISCUSS training hours, HOW making recommendations or mandates too soon without talking them through can have negative consequences on kid's dreams.

ADVICE to coaches: do you know your purpose and is it easy for you to make the right decisions? The importance of making sure you have a strong mission statement for yourself.

‘You're just a coach, when are you going to get a real job’ EVERYTHING that’s wrong with this statement.

HOW to train those hard skills to young talented 8, 9, 10-year-olds, teaching pace, technique, and developing skills safely.

    The PRESSURE of parents.

PRACTICAL advice to coaches or parents who are trying to build a better environment and culture in their gym, helping everyone, not just the kids but coaches as well, be happier with their daily work.
