Episode 160: High achievers - how to shift from stress to success

Episode 160: High achievers - how to shift from stress to success

Most people are aware that that behind successful individuals there are solid skills, hours of study and practice, commitment, stress, sacrifice and much more. We see the sparkly stars of victory, the trophies, the achievements and we might think, 'I wish I were like them!'  But did you know that for some of these champions, dancers, performers, CEOs, pilots, musicians and corporate professionals life is not as rosy as it seems?

Life in many professions sees stress, depression, unfulfillment and lack of daily joy and satisfaction.

In this episode we will delve into the competitive life of dancers (and by extension into any other competitive profession), where the end all is often to WIN - and everything else risks to be erased.

We interview Italian-born and Belgium-based coach and RTT therapist Sara Nativi, who will share her story as a professional dancer who suffered from anorexia under the huge pressure she was put on for many years. During those years Sara learned how to listen to her body and experience a shift in wellness.

Today, Sara specialises in helping high achievers to move from stress to success and she shares in this episode what are the key points that may help us to achieve our grand dreams without losing our mental health.

Not only that, but we can also find joy in life again. And you can soon see us talking in my Youtube channel, too!

Find Sara here and ask her any question in English, Italian or French!

Syd Soloski Discusses Helping Gymnasts Retire and Move On In Healthy Ways

Syd Soloski Discusses Helping Gymnasts Retire and Move On In Healthy Ways

Today on the podcast we have a super important and must-hear episode about gymnasts and athletes of all sports retiring or transitioning out of gymnastics, or their sport.

This is not commonly talked about but is hugely important because of its devastating impact on athletes, who have a sudden, abrupt end to their sport.

You go from being super regimented, having a plan, training towards a goal, and you have an identity and a community tied to the sport so when it goes away you have a void, feel lost and don’t really know what to do.

I recently saw a tweet from former National Canadian Team Member and Utah Gymnastic alumni Syd Soloski:

“Retired athletes!! Do you feel like your university/college/program/coaches etc prepared you for life after sport? The transition, identity crisis….??”

So I invited her onto the podcast to discuss this issue as she has experienced this tricky transition firsthand.

Exploring a better offramp system for gymnasts and athletes moving on from their sport.

    We discuss:

There’s an onramp system for College, but why isn’t there an offramp?

How to find a new purpose in your life after sport.

Coach because you're passionate about it not because you’re trying to fill a void.

The importance of having conversations with your kids about who they are.

How do you shift your training mentality and motivation from being an elite athlete to living a ‘normal’ healthy lifestyle?

How to come to terms with the goals that you didn’t accomplish.

What to do when coaches aren’t supportive of athletes quitting?

How to cope with having to medically retire.

    And…

    Why therapy is like prehab.

    We appreciate you listening!

Treating Hip Pain in Athletes - Part 2 (Special Testing)

Treating Hip Pain in Athletes - Part 2 (Special Testing)

Today on the podcast, we are bringing you part two of our Hip Medical Inservice.  Which is training I provide for doctoral students at Champion Physical Therapy clinic in Boston to educate medical providers on different injuries in gymnastics. Last week was a pretty in-depth episode looking at the anatomy and the biomechanics of the hip, assessments, and radiology findings.

In part two, this week, I bridge together the sections of part one and talk about testing and what can you do for assessments and hands-on treatment.

I discuss how to work with someone coming back from an injury and design a program specifically for them.

Plus useful information and research on surgeries, as dealing with somebody who has a labral repair, or a post-op hip can be a little intimidating and often tough to deal with.

Building Explosive Power in Gymnasts with Hybrid Strength Programs (Part 2)

Building Explosive Power in Gymnasts with Hybrid Strength Programs (Part 2)
Today on the podcast is part two of the lectures I was asked to present by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association, to all of the NCAA coaches on strength conditioning for gymnasts.

Part two is focused on the exact weightlifting exercises you should be doing with your gymnasts, balanced and blended with the traditional model of gymnastic specific conditioning of shaping, core work, rope climbs, and handstands.

I get into the nitty-gritty details of planning strength and conditioning programs throughout the seasons, including the most effective amount of sets and reps and how best to build cardio endurance for gymnasts.

WE DISCUSS; What does off-season max strength training look like?

How to train the core in the weight room in the offseason.

The most effective amount of sets and reps for general strength and lifting including an example of a Collegiate Gymnast’s program.

How to build the general aerobic base for gymnast's cardio.

Should gymnasts be doing long-distance runs in the summer?

How to train and use shoulders in different ways to express high force safety and effectively.

    The preseason Plyometric Ramp-up.

Q&A Question from Melissa - What are your thoughts on isometric training for gymnasts?

    And…

Q&A Question - Where do you stand on conditioning before the workout?

The Path Forward for Gymnastics Culture Toward Happier, Healthier Coaches and Gymnasts with Kim Shore

The Path Forward for Gymnastics Culture Toward Happier, Healthier Coaches and Gymnasts with Kim Shore

Today’s podcast is a great one, I sit down and have an incredible discussion with Kim Shore, who was part of Gymnastics Canada’s Safe Sport which I did a series of webinars for on gymnastics culture.

We have talked a lot behind the scenes on this subject and I wanted to get Kim on the podcast to have an in-depth discussion about the reasons why some coaches or gyms become toxic, examples of people who are doing the right thing. Why there are still so many kids who are unhappy with their experience in the sport? Why are there so many burnt-out coaches? Why are there so many gym owners frustrated with finances or their staff?

We dig in deep, and for the first time in a podcast, I share my honest thoughts on what I think are the real core issues.

As well as that, I talk openly about when I was really struggling as a younger coach and what I went through to crawl myself out of depression and burnout due to a lot of these cultural issues in our gym.

So what can you do to crawl through some of these really challenging problems, that a lot of people deal with culturally?

And how can you as a listener, right now in your car, on your run, at home, doing dishes, how can you change things to make positive progress towards your goals, what you want out of gymnastics, to make others happy, and most importantly for you to be happier as well?

    We appreciate you listening!
