College Admissions & Life Beyond K-12 with Deborah Allen

College Admissions & Life Beyond K-12 with Deborah Allen

Have you ever wondered how to steer your child through the labyrinth of education to a fulfilling career? Join Davies Owens and Deborah Allen, as they unpack the art of nurturing K-12 students toward their unique callings and the thoughtful choices that shape their future. Amidst a landscape where the value of a college degree is hotly debated, they address parental concerns, the significance of gap years, and how tools like the Highlands Ability Battery can provide clarity and direction for those pivotal life decisions.

As they navigate the pressures of an achievement-driven society, their conversation takes a heartfelt turn towards the identities of our children. They question the treacherous balance between accomplishments and authentic self-worth, probing the myth of certitude that haunts many parents and educators. The labyrinth of life demands a faithful, step-by-step approach, and we discuss the importance of fostering a whole-person lifestyle for our kids, ensuring they know their worth extends far beyond their list of achievements.

Finally, they hone in on the transition from high school to the world beyond, where classical Christian education and career counseling interlace to offer a beacon for the journey. They explore the evolving role of college advisors, suggesting an expanded focus to guide students not only to college but toward their calling and contribution to the common good. This episode is an essential listen for anyone invested in guiding the new generation to lead not just with their minds, but also with their hearts and hands.

Episode 226-Should Christians Encourage Their Kids to Go to College?

Episode 226-Should Christians Encourage Their Kids to Go to College?

In this episode of the National Crawford Roundtable podcast we discuss whether Christian parents should encourage their kids to attend college.  Is it really worth it?  With ungodly world views shaping issues taught in colleges, what is the risk that it teaches our kids to be intolerant, Left-Wing, Marxist, Communist, Global Warming obsessed, Evolution-believing, abortion-supporting, LGBT celebrating, gender-confused, Democrat voting former Christians?  Is that really worth a (possibly) higher paycheck?  And what about the expense of college?  Does being riddled with debt outweigh the necessity of a degree?  What is it about Academia today that makes it so evil?

    20) Why You Don't Need A College Degree To Become A Digital Nomad

In this episode, we discuss why you don’t need a college degree to live the life you want as your own boss and travel the world.

I know this after years of experience coaching clients since 2019. Some of my most successful clients did not have a college degree, and some created their own businesses right after high school and never looked back. They learn through my program, and with the right direction, you don’t need to go to college and collect years long debt to have the career you want.

We also talk in the episode:

    • How to not fall into the trap of the matrix
    • The freedom of becoming your own boss
    • How you already possess the skills you need without a degree
    • Hot tips like: No one will ask you about your degree with your own business

Is the College Enrollment Crisis Real?

Is the College Enrollment Crisis Real?

In this episode, I reflect on the end of the 2022-23 school year by revisiting projections from research published in the mid-2010s about an impending college enrollment cliff. The projected freefall in college enrollment was expected around the mid-2020s onward.

Obviously a lot has happened over the last 7 or 8 years, which has significantly affected all aspects of U.S. society including the state of its colleges and universities. I briefly explore the actual and projected enrollment data, and speculate on what might be the catalyst for this potential crisis.

042 | The Value of College

042 | The Value of College

Arguably one of the largest investments some people will ever make, a college education is one that has seen diminished value over the past 10+ years. On the low end (public, in-state) the total cost of attendance for a degree averages about $125k nationwide. For private universities, that number soars to $270k!

As corporate demand for college degrees has reduced, the supply of college graduates has increased, and coupling these factors with the soaring cost of college, this investment has become an ROI-negative proposition for many. In this episode we explore why the value of college has dropped what we think should be done about it.

Episode 160-Should Christians Send Their Kids To College?

Episode 160-Should Christians Send Their Kids To College?

We know that colleges are overwhelmingly anti-Christian and politically liberal.  We also know that kids raised in Christian homes walk away from the faith at alarmngly high numbers.  Should Christians send their kids to college?  With the threat of mountains of college debt and a degree that may not make them more money in the workplace, is it really worth it?  Is a college degree really necessary?  Is college worth it financially?  Is it worth it spiritually?  Should Christians actively discourage college for their kids?

Season 2 Ep 7. Must Contain: College Degrees

Season 2 Ep 7. Must Contain: College Degrees

Kristin and Kristin are joined this week by Kevin Dieny to talk marketing and it's relationship to college degrees. There's so much to talk about, which is why you might have noticed this episode is double the length. But we promise it's worth it. While you may not think of a college degree as a buzzword (buzz phrase?), you probably should. Take a listen to the discussion on whether or not a college degree is a requirement for a marketing job, what skills are most valuable to hiring managers (from the POV of the hosts), where you can gain skills and experience before you apply for your next job, and much more.

If your short on time, the takeaways this episode are our Final Thoughts . You can skip ahead to 46:01 for them.

JeVon McCormick: Don't be common, be the modern leader instead.

JeVon McCormick has an unusual upbringing. Who gave him his first business advice? It was When he was nine years old, from his dad, who was a pimp!

In this episode, JeVon McCormick,  an American author, President, and CEO of Scribe Media told me his origin story, where he was working for his dad (a pimp), collecting money from prostitutes, did not go to college, and he rose up to be an extremely successful entrepreneur, and eventually became the CEO of Scribe Media, which was an excellent publishing company, and his new book, The Modern Leader.

We also talked about what he had seen socially, learned as an entrepreneur, his biggest regrets, what he thinks about the state of the world should be, and what should do to make sure we have a better tomorrow.

There are a couple of things that I have been religiously writing about since 2005, and college is one of them!

I have been getting hate and lost friends over this topic, and the articles that I wrote about college!

So, In this episode of I Was Wrong, I sat down with Robyn and Jay (The Engineer) to talk about was I wrong about colleges? Has my view shifted after all these years? What are the statistics on the salary of college graduates vs non-college graduates? What is happening in the gig economy? And so on...
