034: The Wormhole Is a Franchise

For some reason, Edda or Amos (here sometimes referred to as Edna and Otis) has gone through a wormhole and now Polly and Lolly are older. How much older? Well, we think The Master intended them to be some specific age (probably because he couldn't wait for them to reach the age of consent, because he is a monster), but the way they are drawn from strip to strip makes it impossible to tell what age that is. Are they supposed to be in their early 20s? Mid-40's? 30s? Also, is there a reason (other than poor execution of course) that they both now have black hair which is going gray? So very fucking weird. There seems to be no reason for Polly and Lolly to have "time traveled" from an "alternative reality" other than to come raid Edda's closet for dresses. (EDITOR'S NOTE: it's ALWAYS alternate reality, no one has ever said alternative reality...until now.) Of course, daughters wearing their mom's clothes is a regular thing in this strip and it ALWAYS makes the mom mad. For some fucking reason. There is so much creepiness and grossness here that it was upsetting for us, including (but not limited to) the strip about Polly and Lolly as children talking about how they enjoy watching their parents dream about having sex. So, yeah, totally normal shit going on here, guys. Look, on this episode, it probably seems like we're just jumping into the middle of an ongoing story while ignoring the necessary prelude. And in a way we are. But here's the thing: We go back and do the research and Ol' Bee Mac-El-Dee plopped us down here with no real explanation. Because he's Just. That. Good. There's a sequence a couple of weeks before this where Edda is launched off a swing into space, but that's as close to a logical explanation as you're ever going to get in this god-forsaken comic. VDC #226 WE BACK BABY!

We back baby! After a long 2 month hiatus the VonDubCast is back with a solo episode to let you know why I’ve been so quiet on the podcast front as well as everything i've been up to since you last heard from me. I talk about these magical last few months and all the amazing things that have happened and a little bit about what’s to come in the future. I know a lot of you reached out when the podcast went quiet and I appreciate every one of you but just know that this podcast dream will never die and the VonDubCast ain’t going NOWHERE! It might be a little more sporadic until I find some help to make it what it was always meant to be but I’ll be dropping episodes here and there to keep you in the loop!

Meanwhile the comedy game is booming!!! I’ve been performing all over Alberta, performing in theatres, my Friday show is the best show around and I’m middling at the comic strip this weekend! If you haven’t come out and experienced the magic of live stand up comedy hit me up and get in the mix!

033: I'm Surveying You For Alternative Kiss Sites

What better way to start the new year than to take a look at the first Chickweed Lanes of 2024? Well, I guess it might be better to NOT look at them at all. But that's really not on the table for us, now, is it? Please excuse Jeff sounding like he's broadcasting from inside a tin can. He was literally inside a tin can. Once again, get ready to enjoy some smooth jazz segues, because the technical problems again befall us. But we soldier on and find ourselves back in the world of ear-kissing and the familiar restaurant booths with seat-backs of varying heights (and nothing on the tables of course). Xiulan insists that her husband Hugh kiss Edda's ear, which he does without hesitation. Polly and Lolly practice piano, which for some fucking reason bothers Edda. There's more about kissing ears, then Amos decides to kiss Edda's neck, which is so very difficult what with all of the fucking turtlenecks everywhere. Then we end our episode with more Polly and Lolly. 032: You Sneezed All Over Julius Caesar Dithers

After becoming convinced that Brooke Mac-El-Dee himself is listening to this podcast, we take a deep dive into his poor history with the ellipsis (and other punctuation). You see, in one strip, he makes a point of "educating" everyone about the use of an ellipsis. According to The Master, it is only used to indicated omitted words. And that is not only not true, it is also not how he has EVER used the ellipsis in his own work. In fact, we're not sure he has used it that way even once. So we go back through the strips we've already discussed and actually count the periods. (So many periods.) 031: Like Hookers Short on Crazy Money

It's the big day for Xiulan Ha'Penny Yuan and Hugh Portwhistle Godalming. For some reason, Xiulan has chosen Edda to be one of her two bridesmaids, because of course and why not? Look, Edda is a small part of a wedding that isn't her wedding, so naturally she's furious that someone else is getting all the attention. She has a plan to not only "go commando" underneath her cheongsam, but to "slink up the aisle like hookers short on crazy money." She thinks this would be a fun and funny thing to do at someone else's wedding. And I guess we are supposed to be charmed by this. Oh, that Edda! Typical Edda! What's not to love about her? Seth warns her and Ginger, Xiulan's friend and the other bridesmaid, not to do what they're planning, and Edda gets very mad about it. Xiulan yells at the two of them on the way down the aisle. Edda then sticks her tongue out at Seth, again, on the way down the aisle. Once at the altar, Hugh makes exclaiming "cor lumme" when he sees Xiulan. She makes fun of him for that. At the altar. But then tells him that she and her bridesmaids (who are sitting in the pews now?) are all going commando. They talk about this for a while. At the altar. Instead of getting the wedding going. The priest interrupts and then reveals he has also gone commando. We discover that other people have gone commando too. Then for some reason the priest gets mad about it. VDC #222 VonSolo #29 Preview Of My BIggest Week In Comedy Yet!

VDC #221 Katie Yoner

Today we have one of the Edmonton comedy scenes brightest rising stars, and she is one cool rat let me tell ya! It was fascinating to hear the experience of starting comedy from the lens of someone who has done a lot of performing in other arenas beforehand. It's nice to know that the sheer terror of doing stand up does not fade with experience in other stagecrafts! Katie is currently running an amazing show called The Rat Academy and it has already made major waves at the Edmonton and Vancouver Fringe festivals (among many others!) and is going all the way to Orlando next year! Take a listen to hear more about what this show is all about and what makes it so special and then grab your tickets asap! Katie has the most unique bright energy and it is a joy to take in whether its on the theatre stage or in a comedy club and you are doing yourself a disservice every day you go without seeing her!

030: Me Not So Hot With Scream

Despite repeated mysterious technical difficulties, Brooke and Jeff persevered to bring you the 30th installment of this very important podcast. Was it worth all of the trouble? Of course the answer is no, probably not. But we begin with the aftermath of a date between Gil and Janice, the Nicolette Cignet photographer and Edda's friend and rival from the dance company we met way back in Episode 24: They Wanted You to Model Because of Sitzfleisch Allure (https://www.9chickweedrage.com/024). Gil is getting advice from Seth and Mark and tells them that he did not in fact bone Janice at the end of the date (which was their expectation), but instead kissed her on the left corner of her mouth. This move, according to Mark, is akin to "lighting a sensual fuse." Edda doesn't believe it, but Amos tries it and transports them to a series of famous romantic movies. First La Dolce Vita, then From Here to Eternity, Casablanca, It Happened One Night (which Jeff mistakenly places in 1939 instead of 1934, sorry!), before veering to North By Northwest and settling into the Tarzan canon. There are so many Tarzan strips, guys. It's all very, very stupid. But we soldiered on through multiple glitches and made it happen. Just for you! For those that have listened to the podcast regularly you will have heard me bring up today's guest cooouuuntless times. You've heard me talk at length about his comedic abilities and even with how difficult it is to rank comics, anyone with half a brain has Brad at the very top of their lists. That is why it is such an honour to have him on the podcast to chop it up! He recently recorded a comedy special @themoonyeg and it was nothing short of spectacular! Everyone already knew Brad had the comedy chops to slay a room but to watch him deal with curveball after curveball, learn on the fly, adapt in the moment and rise to the challenge of getting that elusive comedy magic on film was unbelievable. We talk through the weekend of recording, the emotions surrounding it, Brad's entry into the comedy game at 17 and so much more! 029: Dr. Greene Inhaled His Cough Drop

Well, we've been gone for two months but we're back! And if you thought that this stupid comic strip wasn't still stupid, boy, are you in for a rude awakening! All the same old shit is still there: turtlenecks, Dutch angles, references to starlets of the '30s and '40s, no backgrounds, the McEldowney ellipsis! Oh, how did we survive all these weeks without these? Anyway, this stupid storyline is about Juliette and her boyfriend Elliott, whom everyone hates. (Including us!) One version of this story would be to say that he shows up to propose to her and ends up in the hospital. But it's all so fucking convoluted and the story changes with each new development. At first, Juliette is pretty confident that Elliott might pop the question, but she's not certain, so she wears a sexy dress to help him "pop." But later we discover that he proposes to her on a weekly basis. Then, we find out that the minute Elliott walked through the door, he inhaled a cough drop and needed medical attention. But later, we're told that he didn't inhale the cough drop until after she said yes. But even later, we're told that her dress caused him to have "an episode." And a doctor tells us that he inhaled a cough drop but then had an arrhythmia. Anyway, none of it makes any sense, especially the part where Elliott ends up in the ICU for more than a day. To confuse things even more, Brooke and Jeff talk about the ICU like it's the Emergency Room. But then again, that seems to be interchangeable with Brooke Mac-El-Dee as well. Later, a cat motorboats Juliette's boobs. And in the end, no one really gives a shit about what happened to Elliott because they're too busy talking about Juliette's dress. Spoiler alert: She's the sexiest person in the ICU and she loves it! VDC #217 Vonsolo #27 The Rise of The Asylum

Decided to record a little solo eppy this Wednesday and it ended up going deeeeeep. I tried my best to give words to the feelings and emotions i've felt experienced over the last few months of this ridiculous journey and I hope I was able to do it some sort of justice! Gave a little life update including my monday show at sherlock's, my love life, and most importantly how much my life has come to revolve around stand up comedy and more specifically my new shows at the Moon! It's been awhile since I sat down for a few uninterrupted hours and I can't even begin to list all the different things we covered. VDC #214 Australian Legend Chris Franklin

Today we have one of the most Australian bastards i've ever met on the podcast! Chris has been doing comedy for decades and he's been drinking beers for even longer! We had a blast talking about the start to his comedy career and how he has remained in love with the craft all these years later. Chris resides in Tasmania australia and he brings honour to the term "Bogon" each and every day. Chris is currently on his third Canadian tour where he gets to ply his craft for Canadian audiences night after night and enjoy our delicious beer. I think the only thing more impressive than his comedy skills is his absolutely legendary mullet, Alberta is lucky to have him and so is this podcast!

VDC #212 Heg Christian

Today's guest is a brand new comedian that just jumped onto the scene a few months ago but did it with such an infectiously positive attitude I knew I had to get him on the pod to learn more about him. After this conversation I feel like I understand much better where Heg comes from both in life and comedy. The kid loves his people and works hard to make them proud all the time. You can catch Heg at almost every comedy show in Edmonton and when you see him you know his crew is not far behind, the kid rolls deep! It was a pleasure to spend this time with him on the podcast and I can't wait to do ti again and also just to see where this life takes him!

VDC #210 Austin comedian Jimmy Clifford

This is the podcast everybody!!! Not only is Jimmy Clifford an amazing comic but he was one of the most welcoming, encouraging, inspiring people I met in my entire trip to Austin. Seeing someone doing exactly what I’ve been talking and dreaming about on this podcast for over 3 years was nothing short of magical. I’ve heard so many people call me crazy, roll their eyes or straight up try to stop me from achieving my crazy goals but knowing there are people like Jimmy out there making it happen fills me with newfound motivation. VDC #209 VonSolo #26 Austin Texas Recap

Well I'm back from Texas and what a whirlwind trip it was! From fighting the insane nerves, to keeping the trip secret and announcing it at last weeks Asylum, the build up to the trip was crazy in itself. Then almost missing my flight to LA that morning. My flight from LA to Austin getting cancelled. And not knowing the guy I was staying with, it was a journey just to get there. But holy shit balls was that trip amazing and worth every second. From seeing the B-team Jiu Jitsu gym, watching Sugar Sean win a world title in a packed out bar with new friends, recording some of the most amazing podcasts I've ever done with @thejimmyclifford and @jasonrouse666, seeing shows at The Comedy Mothership, The Creek and the Cave and many others and going through the KillTony gauntlet it was a trip I will never forget. I am so thankful for everyone who helped me out along the way and this podcast is just the start of me trying to repay all the kind souls that made it so special!

VDC #208 Dan Schmidt

Today's guest is an amazing person. My gut told me I needed to have him on, but I couldn't have imagined what an amazing story I was in for. His life has had ups, downs, left turns, heartbreaks and triumphs but throughout it all he has remained true to himself and his faith in the most beautiful of ways. Dan has overcome a life changing car accident at 16, being excommunicated from his church and hometown, crisis' of faith and so much more. And to talk to him you would never suspect any of that behind the depth of kindness and genuine care he shows to everyone around him. This podcast had some great laughs and some powerful moments and i'm so glad to share it with you all! VDC #207 Cian Beatty

I love to podcast. So when I have an episode lined up, there is a usual level of anticipation I feel in the lead up. Sometimes however there are guests that elicit such a level of excitement I worry they won't live up to the hype i create in my own head! Today's guest Cian Beatty was one of these, but i'm so happy to report that it lived up in every way! Cian is one of the strongest comedians in Edmonton and not only is he funny as hell but he also has an analytical mind that breaks down comedy at a very high level. It was these skills that had me itching to sit down and pick his brain and I know this is only the first in many amazing podcasts we are going to have over the years! VDC #206 Erin Wood

Hello you beautiful crazy bastards! We are back with another episode of the podcast and today’s guest is Calgary comic and show runner Erin Wood! I got to meet Erin up in Edmonton and was super impressed with her hosting skills and positive energy. And when I went to let her know that, she was kind enough to invite to her amazing show @ratboycomedy down in Calgary the following week. So naturally I knew we would have to squeeze in a podcast while I was down there! We only had about 35-40 minutes before the show so it’s a little shorter episode than normal but Its amazing all the same. I also can’t say enough about how much love was put into that ratboy comedy show and form what I could gather that is a week in and week out occurrence. Whether it was the handmaid hand coloured setlists/comic sheet or the insane amount of toy rats and tech decks you could never say the show doesn’t have personality! I can’t wait to see Erin up in Edmonton again so you can all see her do some stand up but until then follow her at @drcoolwood on Instagram and if you are in Calgary on a Wednesday go check out her show!
