Danny P on Cars! Hot Rod Bob - We talk drag racing, British cars, Californian car culture and a whole lot more!

You don't get a nick name like Hot Rod Bob without a few stories.   Bob Beck is a Californian car guy who's followed his passion his whole life.  When people have said to him "you can't do that!" his response has been "just watch me!"

He's pretty much done it all in the car world; built and modified cars, worked for BMW and Nissan, written about cars and even raced them.  He's hosted a TV show, been a journalist for various magazines and event been a commentator following in the footsteps of his heroes!

This episode is a first for Danny P on Cars!  It's the first time I've worked with a guest I didn't know!  My thanks to Bob for his time and for sharing his story with me!

For each episode I try to work with the guest to understand who their favorite artists are.

Todd Richards on Preserving Snowboarding's Culture

Todd Richards is a pro snowboarder, action sports commentator, podcaster and entrepreneur. Todd grew up in Paxton, Massachusetts and got into skateboarding and punk rock. Skating was one of the first things Todd was passionate about and he could see progression happening and that was the backbone for everything.

A friend introduced him to competing right at the time when the birth of snowboard halfpipes started. The rest is history. Todd went on to win multiple X Games medals, two U.S. Open halfpipe titles and was on the first ever US Halfpipe Team at the Winter Olympics in 98.

Nowadays Richards hosts the Monday M.A.S.S podcast with friend Chris Cote, commentates on various skateboarding, snowboarding and action sports events such as Dew Tour, Jackalope Festival and the Olympics for NBC. Works with Quiksilver on Marketing, is part of The Sports Management Mastermind and has a number of investment ventures.

Clean and Gold: Lucy Stephan, Alex Purnell and Glenn Mitchell

Clean and Gold: Lucy Stephan, Alex Purnell and Glenn Mitchell

It was billed as “the Olympics the world had to have” and it certainly delivered. This episode of Clean and Gold looks back at the Games’ highlights and features two of our gold medallists, rowers Lucy Stephan and Alex Purnell.

Stephan, who grew up in Nhill - a town with no water for years, says she was “prepared for anything” when her races were delayed by an approaching typhoon.

“I think, honestly, it’s kind of like, ‘ok, what else have we got,” says Stephen, who won the coxless four event alongside Rosemary Popa, Jessica Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre.

Being the first Olympic gold medallist from a town of less than 2000 people, one of the things she’s looking forward to the most is heading home and sharing it with the school kids.

“You don’t have the luxury of seeing those people around you often go off and do sport and amazing things, especially a sport like rowing,” she says. “This [gold medal] may help push and guide those young kids to help them achieve their goals, whatever they may be.”

Fellow gold medallist Alex Purnell says the lack of international competition may have played in their favour.

“I think it was an advantage for us,” he says. “It was nice that there was no real form guide so we could fly under the radar, do our thing and it ended up working out well for us and we managed to cross the line in front.”

Alongside men’s four crew mates Alex Hill, Spencer Turrin and Jack Hargreaves, they held off a fast-finishing Romania to win gold, ending Great Britain’s dominance in the event since the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

The foursome dug deep for inspiration and drew on the Raiders for strength.

“At that point when everything is hurting so much you try and draw inspiration from somewhere and just try and find an extra something,” he says. “Over the last 100 it was ‘Raiders, Raiders, Raiders!”

And the prospect of Paris 2023? Both admit it’s definitely “tempting” that’s for sure.

ABC commentator Glen Mitchell, a veteran of four Olympic Games, admits he was ambivalent in the lead-in the Tokyo Games given the lack of crowds and the fact the majority of the Japanese didn’t want them to go ahead.

“I was pleasantly surprised how watching the Olympic Games, it [lack of a crowd] didn’t really stand out to me so much, it changed my perception in some ways to have crowds at venues,” he says.

While highlights included watching Jess Fox and Peter Bol race, Mitchell also enjoyed the camaraderie of the athletes, particularly those competing in the new Olympic sports of skateboarding and BMX riding.

“I thought that was really heart-warming the way the youngsters reacted to their competitors that had actually had a bad run, it’s not the sort of thing you’re used to seeing at the Olympics competition.”

Finally former Olympian Ben Hardy, a Sport Integrity Australia’s Intelligence Analyst, shares his top tips for competing clean.

Hosted by Tim Gavel and three-time Olympic gold medallist Petria Thomas

    Camilla Hadland, rowing commentator

    Camilla Hadland, rowing commentator

S2 Episode 5 Camilla Hadland has a voice that many of you will recognise. Having started rowing as a junior at a small club, she won a place in the U23 Women’s 8 and competed at the World Junior Championships in 2010, where they won Britain's first ever women’s gold medal at that event. After university, where she was President of her university boat club, she stopped rowing regularly and moved over into coaching.

Camilla fell into commentating, but soon found herself in demand. In 2018 she won World Rowing’s first ever commentating competition and achieved a spot commentating at the World Cup in Serbia. Since then she’s regularly commentated at international events and is part of the commentary team at the Tokyo Olympics. Having done a couple of stints commentating at my club regatta, I was fascinated to hear all about her experiences and to glean some wisdom from her.

    We talked about:

    • How Camilla got started in rowing and her multiple capsizes
    • Learning to row in a small club set up
    • Being selected for the GB Team at the Junior Worlds
    • The challenges of looking after your health while training at such a high level
    • Body image and the ups and downs Camilla has had with it
    • Not making it into the U23 8+ and moving across into coaching
    • Favourite seat in the boat
    • How Camilla got started in commentating
    • How she learned the craft of commentating - how to cater for the whole audience and create atmosphere
    • Finding your own voice
    • Different types of event - the different preparations and style
    • The challenges of live streaming remotely from the European Championships
    • The idea set up for commentating
    • How to make an uneventful race sound exciting
    • Keeping tabs on rowing teams throughout the year
    • Making mistakes - and learning from them
    • How to show compassion to a crew losing badly
    • Essential equipment
    • Advice for anyone wanting to improve their commentary skills or progress in commentating
    • Plans for Tokyo and the likely challenges

Let me know if you're inspired to have a go at commentating or to take your experiences of it to a new level. You can find me at @girlontheriver on all channels or by emailing me at girlontheriverpodcast@gmail.com.

Talking with West Indian Commentator Fazeer Mohammed

Talking with West Indian Commentator Fazeer Mohammed

Fazeer Mohammed has been delighting global audiences since 1987 as a cricket commentator combining ebullience, eloquence and erudition. In anticipating the coming West Indies series, he comments powerfully on support for the BlackLivesMatter agenda not just from the team but among all the people and nations of the West Indies.

He analyses acutely the recent weakness of West Indies in traditional cricket in contrast to their resurgence in T20, and the deep-seated social and structural factors behind it. Offered the role of supreme dictator of West Indies cricket, he offers a set of remedies in 90 seconds.

Above all, he speaks with passion and insight about the art of cricket commentary, especially on radio: for the commentator, it means being a guest in someone’s home and he describes the standards he sets himself for this role.

Rob Warner Goes Deep - The Inside Line

Rob Warner Goes Deep - The Inside Line

I believe that Rob Warner is a significant part of the success of today's World Cup Downhill mountain biking. As a winning DH racer, he turned his passion and knowledge into a career as the voice of our sport. Starting as commentator for the first World Cup DH race webcasts with Freecaster.tv, he made the transition when Red Bull TV took over the webcast and has honed his narrative skills ever since. I'm honored to have had the chance to meet and interview Rob as he visited California for some other bike-related projects. Learning about the behind-the-scenes effort that goes into what we hear on race day was eye-opening. I enjoyed every minute in his presence with this interview and hope that you enjoy it too. Bring on Croatia!
