    w/Anna Pitts-Anna's on the Lake

A few years back, Anna Pitts and her sister were enjoying a drink at Harborside Common Grounds, a Downtown Kenosha hub of caffeine overloads and social activity for 22 years. Like many of us do, they had a little dream of what they would do if they ever owned their own coffee shop. Little did they know at the time, when Common Grounds closed last fall, Anna and her family jumped at the opportunity to carry on the tradition of delicious drinks, delectable pastries, and scrumptious sandwiches along our beautiful Kenosha harbor with the opening of Anna’s on the Lake, 5159 Sixth Ave! But wait, there’s more! At Anna’s, you can enjoy an alcoholic beverage of your choice on the triple tiered deck and grab a brat or hot dog from their grill!

We sit down with Anna and talk about how her life led her to this career and much more!

Ancil Lea - Start Small, Take an Action and Watch It Grow

Welcome back to another episode of the Selling from the Heart podcast with Darrell Amy and Larry Levine. Today, they feature Ancil Lea, a healthcare software technology industry veteran of over 35 years who has helped startups gain market share with his relationships and strategies.

He is the author of Common Grounds 2, the latest in a series, and he talks about achieving monumental things by making the first step. He highlights how being authentic is the correct way to sell and shares how a coffee shop is the best backdrop for creating lasting relationships.

    HIGHLIGHT QUOTES

Curiosity, care, and comfort are business secrets - Larry: "When you bring curiosity to the forefront when you show that you care, there's a level of comfort that starts to happen. And when that level of comfort starts to happen, I firmly believe that's when people start opening up. And I often refer to these as business secrets. When you bring curiosity, and when you bring care and you bring comfort just watch what starts to happen to the amounts of information you start to learn."

Start small by taking an action towards your goal - Ancil: "Starting small is, you know, everyone wants to do something big. But how do you get there? You really get there by making one small step. It's just taking action, doing something."

How the “Singaporean voice of youth” found cognitive clarity as a community builder 🧠 Kuik Shiao-Yin, The Thought Collective

How the “Singaporean voice of youth” found cognitive clarity as a community builder 🧠 Kuik Shiao-Yin, The Thought Collective

“Meet people where they are, not where you wish them to be.” - Kuik Shiao-Yin

Kuik Shiao-Yin has been called “the Singaporean voice of youth.” While serving two stints as a nominated Parliamentarian, Shiao-Yin delivered clear, passionate speeches that went viral.

Beyond her work in government, she has committed herself to developing the "social and emotional capital" of the young nation. Shiao-Yin co-founded The Thought Collective, a group of social businesses including the School of Thought and Common Ground, a coworking and event space. These spaces are designed to equip more Singaporeans with the social and emotional skills they need to create the cultural change *they* want to see.

In this episode we discuss weaving the fabric of the young nation-state together at the grassroots and governmental level. Shiao-Yin shares her opinion that every successful community starts with leadership that has cognitive clarity and then remains vested in getting clearer and clearer. Shaio-Yin poses questions to other community leaders like, “What is it that you want?” “Who is this for?” “Who do you want to be?” “Who do you want others to be?”

We believe nearly every challenge of building a community can be met by asking yourself, “How do I achieve this by working *with* my people, not doing it *for* them?” Shaio-Yin offers clarity of thought and kindness, and exemplifies what it means to “build with.”

Percussion Playground Project. A conversation about possibilities with Daveed Korup and Angel Lilly

Percussion Playground Project. A conversation about possibilities with Daveed Korup and Angel Lilly

Today’s episode is a casual conversation with a fellow visionary and play enthusiast. He calls himself a rhythm evangelist and a teaching artist. This multi-talented human drum machine has poured his heart and soul into developing curriculum and instruments to help encourage play and connect drums to all core subjects. He has an impressive resume of experience building projects, and music making adventures. I encourage you to check him out online and see some of the exciting projects he is into.

This conversation is a follow up (conversation) from a chance meeting we had at a mutual friend’s dinner table a few months earlier. We had met through mutual friends before, however, This was our first conversation we had about our common interest in building large scale play structures, or physical and virtual spaces for people of all ages and skill levels to play together, learn together, express themselves joyfully together.

Without further adue, I present the author of Tao Te Drum, volume 1 & 2, cofounder of the Baltimore Drum Church, a master of rhythm who believes “the world is a giant drum just waiting to be played”, Daveed Korup.
