Dogs, Cats, Bunnies & a Horse, OH MY!

Dogs, Cats, Bunnies & a Horse, OH MY!

Animals have always held a special place in my heart.  Being an only child, I spent a lot of time alone growing up, and begged my parents for a dog.  They finally relented.  Thus started my lifelong relationship with animals, including dogs, then house rabbits, cats and of course our horse.  I was shy growing up and animals seemed to offer a quiet confidence in me.  Through the years, I've used my fundraising expertise to support a number of animal charities.

Animals aren't just pets, they have been companions to me, and I've found a level of communication with them that is deeper than just "good dog," etc.  They have all become members of my family.

Shortcast #78 OTL | Ukranian Companion Animals Govt U-turn

Shortcast #78 OTL | Ukranian Companion Animals Govt U-turn

Four days ago Off the Leash posted a short conversation between Charlie Moores and campaigner and Off the Leash colleague Dominic Dyer on what he'd been doing to make it easier for refugees fleeing Putin's war on Ukraine to come into the UK with their companion animals. We were very critical of the UK government on that occasion, but Dominic is back with - thankfully - better news...

Shortcast #77 OTL | Ukranian Refugees and Companion Animals

A short conversation between Charlie Moores and campaigner Dominic Dyer on what he's been doing to make it easier for refugees fleeing Putin's war on Ukraine to come into the UK with their companion animals. As we discuss, Ukraine is not rabies-free, but over a week ago the Vet Times wrote that "Officials in Romania, Poland and Hungary have made exceptions to peacetime restrictions on pets crossing borders as thousands, including many with animals, flee war-torn Ukraine". In Hungary, in order to ensure a smooth entry, the national chief veterinarian has ordered the completion of a simplified registration form.

Why are we so slow to help and what can we do about it?

Transforming Trauma with Philip Tedeschi and Molly Anne Jenkins

Transforming Trauma with Philip Tedeschi and Molly Anne Jenkins
Have you ever looked deep into the eyes of an animal and felt entirely known? Often the connections we share with non human animals represent our safest and most reliable relationships, with unique and profound opportunities for healing through periods of hardship. This is the focus today with my guests Philip Tedeschi and Molly Jenkins, from the University of Denver, Graduate School of Social Work, Institute for Human Animal Connection (IHAC). Their newest book, Transforming Trauma, examines how our relationships with animals can help build resiliency and transform the healing of trauma. Techeschi and Jenkins have produced the go to sourcebook on the role of animal assisted interventions for children and adults coping with the debilitating effects of psychological trauma as well as a deep consideration for how we can respect animals participation in trauma recovery practices and establish ethical standards to ensure the well being of therapy, companion and trauma recovery animals.
