Episode 255 - No Hollywood Ending Here. Leon Wins CCL.

Episode 255 - No Hollywood Ending Here. Leon Wins CCL.

Episode 255 may be the toughest one yet here on Defenders of the Banc. No match was more important in our club's history than this second leg of the 2023 CCL Final against Leon. We had them at home, at BMO, at a place we've staunchly defended for 6 years. We needed just one goal to level things and take control of the series. And we had Denis Bouanga, Carlos Vela, a healthy Kellyn Acosta, an un-suspended Jesus Murillo, and... wait... is that Giorgio Chiellini?! It is!

However, despite the talent, the desire, and maybe the best support The 3252 have ever provided, we didn't have the goals. LAFC failed to find the back of the net in leg 2, falling 1-0 and 3-1 on aggregate. Club Leon is the 2023 CCL Champions.

On this episode, we try to help you navigate through the hurt and the grief. We ask questions of Steve and Cifu, throw praise at McCarthy and Denis, and wonder what could have been. Walk with us on the journey that is Episode 255, and know that the next one is just around the corner!

Episode 254 - Denis Provides a Lifeline at the Death!

Episode 254 - Denis Provides a Lifeline at the Death!

Just when we thought LAFC couldn't possibly play any worse, Denis Bouanga went and did something like that... and TOTALLY REDEEMED THEMSELVES!

After an absolute stinker of a performance for the first 95+ minutes of the first leg of the CCL final against Leon, a stunner at the death for Denis Bouanga and LAFC makes the 2-1 loss seem a little less awful, and the patch to CCL victory a whole lot less daunting! It was a beautiful sequence, as Denil Maldonado, Carlos Vela, Sergi Palencia, the heel of Mati Bogusz, and then the golden boot of Denis Bouanga finally broke through in Mexico!

Let's not mince words. If not for the heroic effort of John McCarthy, LAFC could have very easily given up four or five goals tonight. But we didn't! And now the scene shifts to the friendly confines of BMO Stadium, a house of horrors for Leon (see: 2020). June 4, we have everything to play for!

Also on Episode 254, Scarf apologizes for his hubris, Filly has Scarf on the brain, and Denis earns a free beer courtesy of a Leon supporter. It wasn't at all pretty, or even that much fun to watch, but we made it out with our CCL title dreams intact!

Pulisic Needs A Redemption Arc, MLS Is Swimming In Money, and Messi Failed At PSG

Pulisic Needs A Redemption Arc, MLS Is Swimming In Money, and Messi Failed At PSG

In this episode of the DeadBall TV Podcast, the lads take things back to America to debate the uncertain futures of USMNT stars Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah, both of whom are in less-than-favorable positions with their respective clubs. Pulisic has somehow been deemed to be worse than Mudryk, and Tim Weah is playing in Antonee Robinson's position.

Keeping things local, a recent report from Sportico revealed that 18 MLS clubs rank in the top 50 most valuable soccer clubs in the world. Upon further review, this might not be as big of an achievement as you might think it is...

And lastly, Lionel Messi has added his name to the growing list of superstars who failed to bring a Champions League to PSG. After an apparent miscommunication about practice (PRACTICE!), PSG suspended Messi for 2 weeks and announced that they do not plan on extending his contract.

So what's next? Chase the cash in Saudi Arabia? Tan on the beach in Miami? Return to Barcelona? We have a few thoughts.

Episode 244 - Kellyn and Tillman Revive LAFC's CCL Hopes

Episode 244 - Kellyn and Tillman Revive LAFC's CCL Hopes

It's Episode 244, and it's the first half of the rematch everyone has been waiting for: Leg 1 of the Semifinals of the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League tilt between LAFC and the Philadelphia Union.

Thanks to a pair of superb saves by John McCarthy, LAFC and Philly left the first half level. A Kellyn Acosta handball gifted a PK to the Union with just 4 minutes left in regulation, and Daniel Gazdag hammered it home to give the hosts a late lead. However, Kellyn would go from goat to hero, getting on the end of a Timothy Tillman cross even as the ball dipped behind him. Despite a touch from Andre Blake, the visitors leveled the match and broke the hearts of the Philly fans.

LAFC heads home to BMO with all kinds of options available to them as they look to advance to the CCL Finals for the second time. Also on this episode, Filly offends the good people of Pigs Knuckle, Arkansas, rendering Scarf utterly speechless. Enjoy Episode 244!

NYCFC Is UNDEFEATED At Home | NYCFC 3-1 FC Dallas

NYCFC Is UNDEFEATED At Home | NYCFC 3-1 FC Dallas

NYCFC is on a roll, after two wins from two games at Citi Field they head to the road for a 4 game away stint.

We were impressed with Santi's performance starting at the 9, but GP took the cake for best player of the game. He quietly put together an incredible performance. Cushing has also been criminally underrated for his management of players, he's been putting together masterclasses with his subs, benches, starts, and everything in between.
